28 Dogs Abandoned On Side Of Road
Horst Hoefinger

Once again, this goes into the ‘What is wrong with people?’ category.  If you can’t care for your dogs the least you can do is turn them in at a no kill shelter.

FREDERICK, MD – Frederick’s Animal Welfare League is now offering a $500 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person who dumped 28 dogs on the side of the road last week.

It happened on one of the coldest days of the year.

The dogs, all small breed, were found wandering the streets in Frederick County.

Adoptions start Tuesday for the pups. You can go to the Frederick County Animal Control Shelter if you’re interested.

It’s located at 1832 Rosemont Avenue, or you can call them at (301) 600-1546. To see their website, click here.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Frederick County Animal Control.

Hundreds Of Dogs Removed From Puppy Mill
Horst Hoefinger

A puppy mill in Mt. Vernon, Washington has had hundreds of dogs removed in a two part raid.

Nearly 200 dogs were confiscated from two separate kennels south of Mount Vernon after authorities served search warrants for animal cruelty and neglect, Chief Criminal Deputy Will Reichardt of the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office said.

The dogs were mostly Chihuahuas, Shih Tzus, poodles and Yorkshire terriers.

There was also a room that was housing about 20 female dogs that were nursing litters of pups.

About 25 volunteers removed about 150 dogs Wednesday that were evaluated to be in need of better care.

Those dogs were taken to a temporary shelter at the Skagit County Fairgrounds in Mount Vernon or to the homes of volunteers.

Another 40 dogs that were living in small crates, many of which were contaminated with their own feces and urine, were seized from another location on West Big Lake Road, Reichardt said.

The dogs were mostly Australian Shepherds. They are being housed temporarily in private residences of local volunteers until other accommodations can be made.

This is a huge operation, a second raid on the property seized over 300 more dogs.

The animals had been left behind during an earlier seizure at a home in the 16000 block of Mountain View Road.

Two of the 135 dogs seized in the original warrant have tested positive for a potentially deadly intestinal disorder called coccidia, and three more dogs seized Friday are suspected of being infected with it.

The dogs are being moved to the Skagit Valley Fairgrounds for treatment. Then they will be moved to shelters and foster homes.

Animal control officers are asking that anyone who has purchased a dog from the Mountain View kennel belonging to Richard and Marjorie Sundberg to call the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office as this information may be important to their investigation. Call Animal Control officer JoHannah Deterding at 360-336-9450 or e-mail Officer Deterding at johannad@co.skagit.wa.us

The group Saving Pets One at a Time is helping the dogs. People interested in volunteering or donating can find out how at the group’s site.

Also, the Chuckanut Valley Veterinary Clinic is helping the rescued dogs. They can be reached at phone: 360-757-3722 or e-mail:  info@chuckanutvet.com.

Puppy Mill Conditions Shock Seasoned Veterans
Horst Hoefinger

In Gold Bar, Washington a puppy mill was raided after a tip from a good Samaritan. The conditions of this puppy mill were so horrendous that even seasoned animal control officers were shocked.

After obtaining a search warrant, deputies and officers raided the property, where they found many of the dogs stuffed inside small crates and pens overflowing with urine and feces, investigators said. Several dead puppies also were found in a freezer, and two dead dogs were found elsewhere on the premises. Eighty-seven of the dogs were living in a converted attic.

On the property a variety of small breed dogs were found along with some mixed breeds, sold as “designer dogs.” There were also a few larger dogs along with four cats and three parrots. All together 155 animals were rescued, taken to the Everett Animal Shelter for care and assessment.

Vicki Lubrin of the Snohomish County Animal Control Services said the cost of seizing and treating the animals rescued from these conditions severely impacts the budgets of all responding agencies.

She said anyone wishing to donate dog food or money for medical expenses to the Everett Animal Shelter’s nonprofit agency, ARF (Animal Rescue Foundation), may do so by calling 425-257-6000 or coming to the shelter in person at 2732 36th St., Everett.

We hope all the animals will eventually be put up for adoption and find loving homes.

Photo Contest Winner for 12/22/2008
Mark Rogers

Boy, you all made it really tough this week. There were so many funny entries that we almost had to toss a coin. However, in the end, dark humor (my favorite) won out and Susan walks away with the 25 Zealies for her sidesplitting quote that just matches this shot perfectly. Nice job, Susan.

Be on the lookout for tomorrow’s Christmas contest. A little hint, it will be starring my dog, Bizzy
