Don’t Look The Other Way, 3 Rescues Need Rescue

Horst Hoefinger

I received a message from a good Samaritan who is trying to do the right thing, help three rescues who need rescue. Unfortunately everyone she has contacted has looked the other way.

I realize times are hard, but that’s when help is needed the most. I know there must be someone looking to adopt an adorable dog (look at those faces) or a rescue group that can step in and help this person.

Hello rescue friends-

This is a plea to help 3 stray dogs in my neighborhood in Decatur, GA. They need rescue or adoption. So far, Canela (left) is in a temporary foster home, but Ossa (middle) and Beethoven (bottom) are still in their respective yards.

The brief story is that these are dogs taken in off the street by one of my neighbors, who has a big heart but not the best situation to be taking in animals. Her husband is not an animal lover to say the least and would not allow her to keep them on their property. She has been keeping them in the back yards of 2 separate houses that have been vacant for some time. She feeds and visits with them daily, and they all at least have a rabies shot. Canela is spayed but due to my neighbor’s lack of transportation, the other 2 are still intact (they stay in separate yards).

My neighbor has limited resources to place the dogs – no car, no computer, limited command of English – and she also has a turbulent home life. I want to help place the dogs for their own sake, but also so that she can focus on her own problems. She was assaulted and ended up in jail about 2 weeks ago, which is when I was asked to feed the dogs. She was bailed out a few days later, but has a court date coming up and could be incarcerated again. Hopefully together we can find these dogs a better situation. I can help with vetting / transport for anyone who can take them.

Ossa (my neighbor says this means “little bird” in Spanish) is a fluffy black border collie mix (my best guess). She is about 2 years old and is playful and friendly. She is maybe 30 pounds.

Beethoven is a shepherd mix puppy who is just under a year old. I thought he would be bigger than he has turned out to be (a thick but compact 35 pounds or so), so maybe he is mixed with a smaller breed as well. He is extremely playful and enjoys belly rubs and lots of affection.

Canela (”cinnamon” in Spanish) is a beagle mix and her tail is cropped because something was wrong with it when she was found, like the others, tied to a tree or a building. She is learning manners in her foster home and is getting along with both dogs and cats. She is also about 30 pounds.

I would take these dogs myself but I already have 7 animals in my house. I appreciate your concern and thank you for your efforts. Any interested parties may contact me at this email address.

Please feel free to post and crosspost this message, time is of the essence.

A Pretty Girl Needs A Home

Horst Hoefinger

That’s right, Pretty Girl is in desperate need of a home.  I was sent an email letting me know about her,  when I opened up the picture and saw her face I knew I had to post.

Hi to all,

I am personally in need of help. Some of you might remember about a year ago I sent out an email for help w/ getting Pretty Girl placed. She was a neighbor’s dog that had been tied to a tree for most of her life and the neighbors moved and left her. Our old neighbors treated her for heartworms and took care of her. When it got colder I offered to keep her in my basement with a space heater,  as the weather got better she stayed in my backyard during the day. It worked out great! Until my landlord told me to move or buy the house we were in.

So we moved, between my boyfriend and I we have 8 dogs and 9 cats (one is a foster). Our friend took Pretty Girl and she has been living on his screened in patio and yard. He told me he was intending to adopt her, so I stopped trying to place her. Well, needless to say, he told me the other day he needs for Pretty Girl to be gone in about 1 week.

Our house is very full, but more importantly, PG doesn’t fit in our groups. She is good with male dogs, but not really females. She also is not great with cats. She is amazing with all people. She is current on vaccines and is heartworm negative. I have been taking care of her heartworm, flea prevention and food. I am willing to continue with this if someone can help.

Right now I’m overwhelmed with my own pets (one is recovering from major orthopedic surgery) and I work 2 jobs (I’ll stop complaining now). I’m just concerned even if we physically have room for her at our house, she’ll never get attention, and I won’t have the time to try to pursue a permanent home for her.

If anyone can help, please, please, please let me know!

I’m willing to drive her around the SE too!

Make A Difference In A Dog’s Life, Become A Foster Parent

Horst Hoefinger

In Our Hands Shelter in Brooklyn, NY is in desperate need of foster parents to help care for loving dogs whose time will be up without immediate intervention.

Dear Friends,

The lists of URGENT dogs at Animal Care and Control have been especially awful during the past couple days, and as a result, we have committed to placing the following NO CONCERN dogs and others. In order to SAVE THEIR LIVES, we are asking you, our faithful supporters to stand and offer to foster a shelter dog who would otherwise meet the same unhappy fate of millions per year.

Sweet Butter came into the shelter via police escort on 11/11/08. This gentle girl hopped right in and got a ride, thinking they must be taking her home. But no, sadly they took her instead to an overcrowded city shelter. Now her life is in grave danger, for there is no cage space left, and Butter has been there too long. Can you help by fostering or adopting her?

THIS SWEET SWEET Boy is going to be DUST unless you can commit to ADOPTING/FOSTERING or Sponsoring IMMEDIATELY!!!
2 year old MARLON was wandering the streets as a stray. They scooped him up and brought him to the Shelter.

He was soooo thin … very emaciated. But he hadn’t been on the streets for long, because his nails were overgrown. That means that someone kept him confined, didn’t walk him, and didn’t feed him. The staff has been feeding him extra meals to fatten him up. All the while, he’s proved a loving animal: great with people and fine with other dogs. He arrived weighing only 38 pounds and should weigh a lot more.

Although Marlon has been let down by humans, he’s nevertheless sweet as sugar, well-behaved AND smart! He plays nicely, fetching a doll and returning it. He’s happy to rest his head on your lap (to stay warm during this cold weather, and he probably knew about the treats in my pocket). Please consider this fine, affectionate dog!

Sweet Butter and Marlon are just two of the dogs in desperate need, please contact the shelter to find out about the others.

If you’re looking to adopt, or are available to foster, please contact Emily today at emily@emilygear.com.

* The beauty above is Kane.

Stars And Stripes Furever

Horst Hoefinger

While most of us realize the impact on the families left behind when a loved one in the military is deployed,   many don’t think about the pets left behind.

NetPets, founded by Steve Albin and endorsed by the Department of Defense, matches people willing to care for pets to deploying service members in need of their generosity.

It’s easy to assume that there is always family or a friend to leave their beloved pet with,  but that’s not always the case.

“I had people tell me how service members called up for the first Gulf War had just three options: giving their pets away, putting them in shelters or abandoning them,” Albin said. “More than 25,000 pets were destroyed. What kind of way is that for us to repay the people who protect and serve us?”

Steve is right,  those men and women that are serving our country, the last thing they should be burdened with is worrying about who is going to care for their beloved pet.

So far, his free service has placed some 12,500 pets into foster homes since he began the project two days after the 9/11 attacks, Albin said by telephone last week from South Carolina.

Steve stated “He gets 20 to 50 calls a week in CONUS (continental United States), but that right now he had no one available in Europe.”

People wishing to help out can sign up by clicking the Military Pets Foster Project tab on the netpets.org homepage. The site contains a form establishing what kind of pets the potential foster home can accommodate.

We salute you Steve, for a job well done.
