Win A Beautiful Memorial For Your Pup
Lisa Hoefinger

It seems sadly apropos that I post a contest today to win a beautiful memorial to honor your dog’s memory.boundless_heart_bl.5

If you’ve ever suffered through the heartbreak of losing a pet you know how devastating it is. The terrible void it leaves in your life. It’s not just the loss of a dog, it’s the loss of a family member, a friend.

For those that aren’t dog lovers, they will never understand the importance of being able to say a proper goodbye. Being able to grieve without being criticized, share your feelings without anyone saying it was just a dog. There’s an online site, Peternity, where you can go to connect with others that are going through the grieving process. They have a place where you can post free online memorials, a wonderful way to honor your dear friend.

Peternity also has an online store where you can purchase a vast array of memorial products. They are the same company who gave us the memorial blanket last winter for a contest.  This time it’s one of their newest items that we’re giving away.  One very lucky Dogster is going to have the honor of putting this special heart in their home.

Losing Logan
Lisa Hoefinger

08 09 08_0503I had some posts planned for today but sadly our beloved rescue Berner, Logan, passed yesterday. At the moment it’s hard to focus on much else so my last post of the day will be a tribute to our boy.

Logan lived at a puppy mill for 4 years, he was the stud dog. He had no name, was kept caged, used and abused.

Eventually when the owner of the puppy mill thought he no longer fit the bill as a stud dog he was put up for auction. Yes, auction, so possibly another breeder could come along to buy him and continue his life of abuse. Or,  if he wasn’t bought he probably would have been put down.

This is where a wonderful organization called the Bernese Auction Rescue Coalition comes in. They bought him, got him medical attention, and put him in a wonderful foster home until he got adopted. On June 6, 2008  Horst and I went to pick up our new family member.  When I saw him I had tears in my eyes, he was so beautiful, and so scared.

We celebrated our 1 year anniversary in June, I left a message on his page because it truly was a celebration. Logan had overcome so much in a year, he was a different dog.

When we first got Logan, I’m not going to lie, it was hard. He barely moved, spent most of his days in our 1/2 bath where he was comfortable. We never pushed him, always let him do things on his own time schedule. Every day we spent quiet time laying with him and petting him. We started taking him for walks everyday and that was when we got our first glimpse at the dog who was waiting to come out. Read the rest of this entry »

Krossing Over
Horst Hoefinger

Kross Monsta Giles, RIP

Kross Monsta Giles, 9, of Saugus, MA passed on February 3, 2009, with his loving family by his side.

Kross (is) survived by his loving parents, Kris & Scott Giles, his human sister, Taylor, 7, and his canine sisters Bella Boo, 3, and his late-canine sister Shoei. He (is) also survived by his grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Sam Camponescki of Wakefield and Mr. & Mrs. William Giles of Melrose.

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, Kross was a beautiful German Shepherd who lost his fight with cancer.  What’s unusual about this story is that the obituary above ran on the Gately Funeral Home website, normally reserved for humans.

Kross was a beloved family member in the Giles’ household, his passing has left a big void. For those that aren’t dog lovers, they just don’t get the importance of being able to say a proper goodbye. Which is why when the Giles’ approached John Gately, owner of Gately Funeral Home, he couldn’t turn them away. Being a dog lover himself he generously donated space for a service to be held in honor of Kross.

Giles, who was turned away by one funeral home owner worried about “public backlash,” said the wake will bring closure to her, her husband and 7-year-old daughter.

“It just felt so good having something for him,” she said. “It’s making me feel better. It’s making the loss a little bit easier.”

While this may be a first in Massachusetts, funeral homes across the country are increasingly servicing grieving pet owners, holding services and funerals. Also springing up across the country are pet memorial centers, specifically to help guide grieving pet owners in a dignified and loving manner when a pet dies. The memorial centers offer a wide range of products and services so you can customize the arrangements, from wakes to burials.

Locally we have a pet memorial center Dream Land, it is a wonderful place where you know your beloved pet will be in good hands after passing.  A place your pet will be treated in a dignified and caring manner.

What do you think about having a memorial service for your pet?  Would you use a pet memorial center to handle arrangements when your pet passes?  Give me a bark.
