While Bo was perusing Facebook, the boy gets around, he came across For The Sake Of Animals. It isn’t a shelter or rescue in the traditional sense, rather the founder uses social networking as a way to help save dogs who are going to die in shelters.

I created this channel on YouTube to save as many animals lives in overcrowded shelters across the country as I can through making these videos and uploading them here on YouTube. Public announcements if you will.

If you can’t see the video click here.

It actually started as an experiment. One day I got an email that had thumbnail pictures of about 33 dogs in a shelter in Ohio off their petfinder site. All were in danger of death due to available space at the shelter. After looking at the email I decided this was no way to feature these animals.

See I have over twenty years in sales and marketing. Using what I know I created my first video for this channel show casing these 33 dogs back on April 27, 2009. Their last day was suppose to be April 29, 2009. I called the shelter for an update and was pleasantly surprised to learn how far and wide the videos reached and that people were calling the shelter about their video they didn’t even know they had offering donations, rescue and even some private public adoptions. The video was a success. With less then two full days before the dogs would be put to sleep the shelter had received enough interest that NO ONE was put down this week. This has continued for the past four weeks at this shelter. All total in the first two weeks the shelter moved forty-eight dogs from death row. To date it has been four weeks and 56 dogs are rescued, adopted or reclaimed.

For almost two years now I have been trying to help animals in high kill shelters across the country by networking with rescues and shelters. I occasionally volunteer to transport as well moving animals out of areas where adoptions just rarely happen.

I finally decided since shelters are overcrowded and mostly underfunded and rescue groups are in the same shoes that it was time to bring the problem back to the public where it originates.

I just know there has got to be more animal lovers out there than the people I have met these past two years. I am hoping by bringing the pictures of these animals to the public, since many tell me they can’t bear to even walk through a shelter and this included people I’ve met who are rescuers, that more animals will get adopted and out of high kill shelters where many are put to death by gassing or heartsick for the crime of Just Being Born.

Times have changed, social networking is now a popular way to spread your message or get the word out about a cause. It’s been working For The Sake Of Animals and I want to help them by doing my part and sharing their message with you. Won’t you do the same?

On Sunday night I asked Lisa if she wanted to go for ice cream, her response was to tell me we may be going to pick up some puppies.

Well, that wasn’t what I expected to hear. She had been on Twitter and read a tweet from the Canine Hope Rescue looking for help with transport of six dogs they had pulled from a kill shelter in Franklin, GA. There were two adults who had been abandoned by their family when they moved out and four puppies from different locations, all had been dumped.

We ended up not having to go thanks to another dog lover who hopped in her car to help out before we got in touch with the rescue. Although we weren’t needed I did get the chance to speak with Tammara Josselyn, the founder of Canine Hope, and found out just how different this rescue is. It’s run by Tammara and her husband who are dog trainers and owners of a doggie daycare.

A Different Kind Of Rescue

No doubt you will find we are a different kind of rescue. We require more steps than what you may be used to when looking for a dog. However, we provide more steps before our dogs are put up for adoption.

Dogs in our rescue:

-Have been taken to a veterinarian and received a complete examination.

-Are current on all their vaccinations.

-Are wormed intestinally.

-Are all spayed and neutered before adopted.

-Are tested for heart worms and put on preventive heart worm medication.

-Are house trained or in the process of being house trained.

-Are crate trained to assure an easy transition when brought into your home.

-Are fed premium dog foods while in our care to ensure good health and good healthy coats.

-Are routinely groomed and have their nails trimmed. All dogs are completely groomed before going home with your family.

-Are taught house manners, socialized with other dogs and people.

-Receive some basic obedience training.

-Are micro chipped in case they become lost.

-Families receive an introduction class where you find out all about your dog and its commands, likes, dislikes, history, how to make the transition with your family go smoothly, etc.

-We ask that you have a trial overnight with the dog you are considering, to make sure you are ready and we have made a good match between both of you.

-Go to their new family with food and a gift package, and a new leash and collar, and their favorite toys.

-Receive a scholarship for training with their new family, and a package for boarding with Cool School For Dogs.

-A rescue group that provides support after your dog goes home with you and will take the dog back without question if you no longer want the dog or can no longer care for it. (Adoption Donation is not returned)

-A quarterly newsletter with information that will serve helpful to your family and your new dog.

Yes, we are a different kind of rescue. If you are interested in one of our dogs, please go to our web page “Adoption Process” on the left sidebar and once you understand our process, fill out our application and return it to us.

I want to give a big shout out to Tammara and her husband, along with all the volunteers, for the wonderful work they do. Canine Hope Rescue is run on donations and the generosity of the Josselyn’s who donate much of their own money. This is a small rescue who could desperately use donations, fosters, volunteers, and adoptive homes. Anything you can do, nothing is too small, is greatly appreciated.

The dog pictured above is Blush, she was thrown off a bridge onto railroad tracks. Thanks to Canine Hope Rescue she has a chance at a new life.

Blush is a one year old female Doberman. She came into our rescue after a horrific act of man. A police officer in a neighboring town was underneath a large bridge checking on vagrant activity underneath the bridge. While he was there, someone threw a dog off of the bridge. Deliberately threw her over with one intention and that was to hurt or kill her. This bridge was not over water, but over railroad tracks.

The officer saw her fall, hit the ground, bounce a few inches and thud to the ground. He figured she was probably dead. She wasn’t and he rushed her to Animal Control. A director from a different rescue happened to be there when she arrived and knew we could probably help this Doberman girl and called us. We immediately set to claiming her and getting her help.

Thanks to the generosity of a local vet we were able to get her x-rayed head to paws. Luckily there were no major fractures but there was a head injury and a spinal injury. Time would tell if she would recover and if there were any internal injuries. She spent almost two weeks in intensive care. We visited her everyday and tried let her know that everyone was trying to help her. We brought her a new collar with a bright and shiny tag displaying her new name, “Blush”, for her new life to help her know that she was at a new beginning and only needed to pull through. At first she could not stand or walk. Then she could stand. She had to be carried and supported when she first started using the bathroom outside. Time passed and she eventually could stand, and then could walk. Today she is amazingly a different dog. She still has gentle steps but is happy and friendly and her only sign of having a problem is her gait when walking and that when she tries to do “zoomies” she sometimes stumbles, but she gets right back up.

Blush isn’t quite ready for adoption but the rescue is taking applications if anyone is interested in adopting this beautiful girl. Or any of the other cuties they have available. Blush’s story is just one of many from the Canine Hope Rescue, such a befitting name because they truly give these canines hope.

If you’re still not sure if you have a few dollars to donate I ask that you read Blush’s story again and then look at her beautiful face. That’s where your dollars go.

I want to thank Dogster member Rhon for sending me a diary entry from Daisy Mae’s page. And of course Daisy Mae for posting it.

This is a heartbreaking and eye-opening look at what happens to senior dogs when their owners decide they can no longer care for them, or choose not to.

Flo is a doe-eyed 10 year-old Basset hound mix that was sent to the animal shelter when her owner couldn’t return home after being hospitalized. The little dog, who is almost deaf, was terrified to be in a cage at a shelter with so many other animals and all of the commotion.

Josie is a serious looking senior Wheaton terrier mix whose owners tied a pretty bow around her neck and dropped her off at a shelter in Northern California.

And when a tiny silver-haired Shih Tzu named Jennifer got too old, her family brought her to the shelter to be euthanized.

This is how life turns out for thousands of loyal older dogs. The main reason senior dogs are relinquished to shelters seems to be illness. Either the owner becomes too sick or passes away or the dogs develop an illness and owners can’t afford to pay for the medical care or choose not to get help.

Prospects are pretty grim if you’re an unwanted senior canine. Shelter workers see the tragedy every day as older dogs with wonderful dispositions are tossed aside. And once they get to an overcrowded public shelter with limited resources they are “practically written off” as un-adoptable.

In addition to being hard to re-home, senior dogs have special health risks when they’re exposed to a shelter environment. They’re more susceptible to kennel cough, their arthritic bones get worse as they sit on concrete floors and the overall stress of living in a shelter can worsen any pre-existing illness. For most old dogs the shelter is where they spend their last days before being euthanized.

However, in the last couple of years some animal advocates who are touched by these sad circumstances are coming to the aid of senior canines.

Sherri Franklin is one of these advocates. With a distinguished career in animal rescue she began a non-profit organization in 2007 for older dogs, called Muttville. The group is located in San Francisco. Their website says this about their goals:

“Muttville’s mission is to change the way the world thinks about and treats older dogs and to create better lives for them through rescue, foster and hospice. We reach out to senior and special needs rescue dogs; find suitable homes for those dogs that are adoptable; and offer end of life care for those that are not.”

The organization is successfully making the last few years of unwanted senior dogs peaceful and happy.

In other parts of the country, The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs and Old Dog Haven are also saving the lives of seniors that have been cast aside. Both organizations have become experts in getting older dogs ready for new homes. They provide an extensive medical workup for each animal so they are in the tip top condition and they use the internet for finding new homes.

Because most of their budgets are used for medical care another organization called Grey Muzzle was started to help. They give grant money to rescue groups that specialize in working with senior dogs.

And some animal shelters like Sacramento SPCA have started programs to meet the special needs of old dogs. They provide cots to get the dogs off the floor and they do a dental and blood work-up so they can determine any medical problems. The group also waves the adoption fee so senior dogs have a better chance of getting a new home.

There are many specific reasons why people avoid adopting an older pet, but the basic theme is, ¯There‘re so many dogs available, why choose one with something that looks like a big problem, or looks ugly, or takes a lot of effort?

The Senior Dogs Project also finds homes for older dogs. They list these 10 reasons why people should consider adopting a senior canine:

1. Most are house trained.
2. They are past chewing inappropriate items.
3. They are focused so they quick learners.
4. Old dog know the meaning of “No.”
5. Settle in with a pack easier.
6. Give lots of love.
7. WYSIWYG – What you see is what you get in personality and behavior.
8. Instant companionship.
9. Owners get more time for themselves because seniors are less demanding.
10. A good night’s sleep – old dogs need their rest.

It’s a sad commentary when people place less value on anything or anyone that is old. Sure, brand new puppies are wildly adorable, but it is a heartwarming experience when an older dog looks you in the eye and crawls into your lap and falls asleep.

I cannot imagine giving up my senior dog who has been with me, and there for me, throughout the years. Thank goodness for the wonderful organizations mentioned above who are stepping in and helping senior dogs. The Senior Dog Project really nailed it with their 10 reasons to adopt an older dog, everything listed is so true.

We got Logan when he was five and have never looked back. Logan is a Bernese Mountain dog from a puppy mill who was rescued by the Bernese Auction Rescue Coalition. When we were originally looking we did want a younger dog, especially because Berners generally have a lifespan of 7 years, but then one of the rescue workers told us about Logan. When we saw his picture it was love at first site.

We just celebrated our one year anniversary on Saturday and are so happy we adopted him, he is a joy. We don’t know how long we’ll have him, but we cherish every minute we do. Let’s face it, there are no guarantees in life for anything, sometimes you just need to take a chance.

I recently posted an article, The Eleventh Hour, to try and help raise funds for the Rocky Mountain Animal Defense. They were going to be attending an upcoming dog auction and money raised would be used to buy dogs that faced almost certain death. The auction has since taken place and thanks to some generous donors they had enough funds to buy 56 beautiful dogs.

Sharon L. Peters wrote a special article for USA Today. It’s a very moving piece on what happens at the auction, you may want to get out the tissues.

Some 250 or so dogs and puppies were, before the sale, living in a brick warehouse-like structure (which I drove to in order to make sure that others’ descriptions were accurate) a stone’s throw from the interstate. The building, essentially windowless except for in the front, where customers view puppies, is surrounded by asphalt and commercial buildings with no place for dogs to be outside. Adult dogs are kept behind doors posted with “Employees only” warnings.

In early May, PBK decided to sell many of the dogs in advance of relocating, according to the seller statement filed with the auction company.

When Last Chance and the Rocky Mountain Animal Defense heard the dogs would be sent to auction, they offered to pick them up and find them homes, says Last Chance’s Julie Sarff. “The dogs are perpetually pregnant or nursing; they live their lives in cages,” Sarff says. “We wanted something better for them.”

When PBK said no, the animal welfare groups flew into action: One contacted shelters and rescue groups, one raised funds online. In four days, animal lovers had donated $16,000. The National Mill Dog Rescue near Falcon, Colo., which has rescued more than 2,000 mill dogs, was on board to send someone to Missouri to buy as many of the dogs as funds allowed, and Denver Dumb Friends League had agreed to take the animals.

I cannot even begin to imagine how horrible a dog auction is, attending one must be a life changing experience. There is actually an auction catalog that describes the pertinent qualities of the dogs, like they’re cattle. There were fifteen males who were described as “aggressive breeder,” this really translates into dogs who will persist in impregnation efforts no matter how unwilling the female. It’s beyond sickening to think this type of thing goes on.

When bidding began, the National Mill Dog Rescue representative followed the agreed-on strategy. Since rescuers couldn’t afford all 202, preference was given to the older dogs “already worn out,” says Sarff, so “they could finish out their lives in a loving home living like a normal dog” rather than being “sold to a miller to produce another litter or two.”

The 56 PBK dogs purchased that day (plus some Pomeranians the auctioneer offered for $2 each because they hadn’t sold and would be killed) were driven Saturday and Sunday to Denver. The Denver Dumb Friends League’s examinations found that many had bad teeth and gums (at least one needed all teeth pulled) and most had foot lacerations and extremely long toenails from walking on wire cages. Nearly all, says Sarff, had poor muscle tone from lack of exercise, and some had infected ears and eye issues. Almost all were fairly well socialized.

I would like to say thank you to the Rocky Mountain Animal Defense and all the other rescues that were there to help. The lives of 56 dogs will now be forever changed because of their efforts and willingness to get involved. It’s because of groups like this that we have Logan, our Bernese Mountain dog who was rescued from the same situation. Logan was terrified of everything when we got him but with lots of hard work he has become a loving, happy dog. He now wags regularly.

Somehow saying thank you doesn’t seem enough. I’m not sure how you sufficiently thank the people who step up to the plate and do this kind of work. I think for them, knowing the dogs they saved now have loving forever homes is all they need.

If you have a few dollars to help out the Rocky Mountain Animal Defense you can make a donation online. Remember, the next dog you adopt may be one they saved.

A call from a concerned neighbor prompted sheriff’s officials to raid a home near Waco, TX. They were stunned at what they saw, calling this the worst case of animal abuse in McLennan County. In total, 78 dogs were removed from the property and taken to the Waco Humane Society to be cared for.

Chief Deputy Randy Plemons said the dogs were being kept in “deplorable” conditions. Up to five dogs were crammed in cages meant for rabbits. In the cages, feces accumulated up to 6 inches high. Nearby was wet, moldy food, he said.

Reached at the home Monday evening, resident Barbara Mitchell, 58, who along with her husband is named in a seizure of animals affidavit filed Friday in McLennnan County district court, said she and her husband were paying several people to care for the dogs and clean out their cages and that the work wasn’t being done.

Mitchell said she and her husband suffer from severe health problems and were not able to check on the dogs. She said she knows that all of the dogs taken are healthy, although Plemons said that is not the case.

She said the couple hadn’t sold their animals in years, and the dogs kept breeding. She said she only wanted to keep certain older dogs.

“If you want to call us a puppy mill, that’s fine, but we’re not,” she said, tearing up. “We’ve been good, Christian people all our lives. We love kids and animals.”

While most neighbors declined comment, some said they feared for the safety of their children and pets because many of the dogs roamed the neighborhood. They also said the house always smelled of feces and decomposition.

Deputies found a 55-gallon barrel filled with decomposing dog carcasses and another full of dead goats.

Many of the lighter-colored dogs’ bellies were stained yellow from resting in urine and feces, he said.

On Friday a custody hearing is scheduled in Justice of the Peace Kristi DeCluitt’s court to determine what will happen to the dogs. There are more dogs, goats, as well as other animals that remain at the home. Those taken were in the most desperate need of care.

Texas legislators are currently considering a bill aimed at breeders who keep hundreds of cats and dogs in cramped, squalid surroundings.

The bill, filed by Rep. Senfronia Thompson, D-Houston, would require those with more than 11 unneutered female animals to submit to licensing, annual inspections, background checks and penalties as high as $5,000 per animal if they violate care standards.

Advocates say the legislation would prevent animal cruelty. Its opponents say the bill would impose an unnecessary strain on small breeders and could put them out of business.

The Waco Humane Society on Monday was asking for financial donations, small-breed dog food and volunteer dog-walkers to help care for the animals.

The shelter is in need of people to adopt or temporarily house other shelter dogs, to find out how to help call (254)754-1454.

* Dino is one of the adoptable dogs at the Waco Humane Society, it is only $50 to adopt him.

That’s right, Pretty Girl is in desperate need of a home. I was sent an email letting me know about her, when I opened up the picture and saw her face I knew I had to post.

Hi to all,

I am personally in need of help. Some of you might remember about a year ago I sent out an email for help w/ getting Pretty Girl placed. She was a neighbor’s dog that had been tied to a tree for most of her life and the neighbors moved and left her. Our old neighbors treated her for heartworms and took care of her. When it got colder I offered to keep her in my basement with a space heater, as the weather got better she stayed in my backyard during the day. It worked out great! Until my landlord told me to move or buy the house we were in.

So we moved, between my boyfriend and I we have 8 dogs and 9 cats (one is a foster). Our friend took Pretty Girl and she has been living on his screened in patio and yard. He told me he was intending to adopt her, so I stopped trying to place her. Well, needless to say, he told me the other day he needs for Pretty Girl to be gone in about 1 week.

Our house is very full, but more importantly, PG doesn’t fit in our groups. She is good with male dogs, but not really females. She also is not great with cats. She is amazing with all people. She is current on vaccines and is heartworm negative. I have been taking care of her heartworm, flea prevention and food. I am willing to continue with this if someone can help.

Right now I’m overwhelmed with my own pets (one is recovering from major orthopedic surgery) and I work 2 jobs (I’ll stop complaining now). I’m just concerned even if we physically have room for her at our house, she’ll never get attention, and I won’t have the time to try to pursue a permanent home for her.

If anyone can help, please, please, please let me know!

I’m willing to drive her around the SE too!

Laura

Hey, who wouldn’t want a Pretty Girl? If you can help out please contact Laura as soon as possible.

In the last few months I’ve been posting more and more stories about dogs being set loose by pet owners who can no longer care for them. This is never an acceptable solution, there are other alternatives.

Copper’s story reiterates why it is so important dogs are brought to a shelter rather than just set free.

OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Copper would shake your hand, speak and even toss you a high-five. A note taped to the mixed-breed’s collar attests to his talents, but these deeds are not verifiable by eyewitness account.

Copper, you see, is dead.

The 30-pound male dog, estimated to be about 1 year old by Kalamazoo County Animal Services and Enforcement officials, was found March 18 lying on the shoulder of an asphalt road in Oshtemo Township. There was a hole in his skull, inflicted when a car hit him.

It was too late to heed the message someone had written on the tape wrapped around his collar: “Help me.”

Beneath the tape, in a plastic baggie, was a handwritten note describing Copper’s charming talents — he could sit, roll over, crawl, play dead and shake hands.

But someone let Copper go, abandoning him instead of dropping him off at one of several agencies around town that could have saved his life. The case has haunted KCASE Officer Mark Vanderberg since he was called to investigate.

I can only imagine how Officer Mark Vanderberg felt finding Copper, no wonder it haunts him. Mystery still surrounds Copper’s release, it seems he was loved, but yet he was left to fend for himself. It is assumed the owner let him go because of all the details in the note, a stranger would not know these things.

Officials say they understand why some pet owners find themselves unable to care for their animals. Owners are required by law to supply ample food and water and to maintain proper veterinary care.

These are not inexpensive needs, and an increasing number of pet owners run into conditions where decisions must be made. Options include turning to the Kalamazoo Animal Rescue, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Southwest Michigan, or the Pet Resource Network. If these aren’t the answer, the Kalamazoo County Animal Services and Enforcement shelter is available.

These are viable alternatives to simply turning a pet loose. Planning ahead, according to KCASE Director Steve Lawrence, can result in a much better outcome for the pet. “I can see why people come to a point where they can’t take care of a pet anymore, but you can’t wait until the very last minute to do something about it,” said Lawrence, director of the agency for six years. “You can see financial trouble coming, and you can start considering options early.

“Put an ad in the paper, start contacting agencies, anything but simply turning pets loose into elements they aren’t prepared for,” he said.

Many pet owners are under the impression that taking their pets to an animal shelter is tantamount to a death sentence, but percentages don’t back that contention.

Of the 480 dogs brought to KCASE this year, 33 have been euthanized, either when the shelter ran out of space or the animal was deemed unsafe, according to Lawrence.

For any dog owner that is in a similar predicament, please heed the advice above. A dog is not responsible for the situation their owner is in, at the very least they deserve to be given a chance at life, not to be turned loose on a wing and a prayer.

* Copper is a handsome boy who was abandoned by his family. He currently resides at a foster home in Minnesota and is waiting for his forever family.

During these tough economic times, when more dogs are being surrendered than ever before, shelters are looking for innovative ways to get their animals adopted.

The North Shore Animal League came up with an idea that involves dogs, a bus, and a road trip. They’re hitting the road to encourage people to adopt rescues.

Dogs and cats on a bus, that’s pretty much the gist of what the North Shore Animal League is up to this time of year.

“We’re traveling across the country to 25 different cities,” said Mike Novellino from the League.

Two mobile units travel thousands of miles to spread one message.

“There are so many homeless animals in these types of shelters that this is where would be the best place to save a life,” he said. Events like this one not only help the adorable pets and the shelter but some people say rescued cats and dogs actually make better pets.

“They just seem to know that they’ve been rescued. They’re very grateful. They’re very thankful that they got a home and there’s a 6th sense that they know they probably escaped death,” said Kelly Farrell who attended the event looking to adopt a dog.

Having always adopted rescues I have to agree with Farrell’s statement. I truly believe they know they were given a second chance.

When you come home from work wouldn’t you like to open your door and see a tail wagging bundle of unconditional love?

i just received a message about a sweet girl who desperately needs a home. Something about the look in her eyes made me post her story.

The undying spirit of a dog always amazes me. No matter what they’ve been through they are always willing to give humans a second chance. In Mocha’s eyes I see a dog who’s very scared, been hurt and mistreated. Yet, I swear I also see a reflection of hope.

Mocha – Poor, sweet 1 1/2-yr-old chocolate lab girl was hit by a car. She needs additional medical help and rescue ASAP. She is a very sweet girl. She remains in great spirits, despite her injury.

This very sweet dog is in need of immediate vetting and rescue! She will have to be saved ASAP or PTS. She is at the high-kill Murray County Shelter in Chatsworth, GA (just north of Atlanta and just south of Chattanooga, TN)! Please help her live!!

NOTE: The pup must have a rescue lined up ASAP, but can stay at the shelter a couple days longer if needed. Free transport to Atlanta provided. + transport to the NE available

NOTE: If you are not able to provide rescue but can donate sponsor $for her vetting, please go to www.paypal.com, click on the “send money” tab on the home page and enter the shelter’s account, murrayshelter@bellsouth.net. In the dialogue box, indicate that this is a donation for the injured lab pup.

Please e-mail or call ASAP as the shelter will not hold this pup past Wednesday, 3/25. Your rescue help is very much appreciated!

Mocha’s time is running out. Are you the hope she’s looking for? Don’t wait, save her life, and in return I guarantee a lifetime of unconditional love.
