I just got this message from a rescue group that is in the UK, they saw this and got it to me in hopes we can help.

Two gorgeous dogs were adopted out only to be kept in a storage unit, the DA won’t prosecute the person responsible, and now the dogs are back at a kill shelter.

We need to get these dogs a home, and there is no time to waste. Then, we need to contact the DA and demand the woman responsible for doing this be charged with animal cruelty.

Lumpkin County, GA Great Pyrenees kept in storage unit!!!

It just came to my attention today that two Great Pyrenees that were formally at the Lumpkin County Animal Shelter in Dahlonega, GA are BACK!

These two gentle giants were adopted out from there to a person who kept them in a STORAGE UNIT for the past two weeks!!!!

Sad thing is…I had those that wanted them…but they were given to someone who did this horrible act of animal cruelty to them! They are now back at the shelter yet I’m trying desperately to get them pulled! They need to see a vet! They need to get out of there! They NEED a NEW HOME!!!

Animal Control picked them up yesterday… but guess what? The DA in Lumpkin County GA will NOT prosecute the woman for animal cruelty!

First thing: PLEASE CALL THE DA’S OFFICE and beg them to prosecute this woman for putting these two gentle and sweet giants into a windowless storage untit filled with her garbage! He refused!!!

Lumpkin County DA: Stan Gunner, Asst. DA; Tom Wight

Call them to DEMAND that they file proper animal abuse charges against this person who put them in a darkened, windowless, environment!!!

706-864-6754

As said above….I am desperately looking to pull these two and get them first to a vet…and then on to a new home or with another rescue that can take them! Please be humble and pass this along to ALL that care about the animals! Help find them a home! If you can not…please consider donating towards the vet care they will need…or in the least…enough money to get them out of the kill shelter where they now linger so I can get them into a boarding facility…

They did nothing wrong in life…yet life has been so cruel to these two…they have spent their lives outdoors…and then sent to a kill shelter…then to a STORAGE UNIT FOR TWO WEEKS!!!…and NOW?! They’re back at the kill shelter!

PLEASE take the time to call the DA’s office! PLEASE take the time to donate even a dollar so I can get them pulled and out of that place!

Thank you!

I received this urgent plea from Ginger’s Pet Rescue, they are trying to help save the abandoned dogs leftover after the California forest fires. If you can help please contact them as soon as possible, time is running out. Post and crosspost this message to all your dog loving friends, rescue organizations, or anyone you think may be able to help.

Many of the animals were about to be euthanized until Ginger’s Pet Rescue in Seattle intervened. They all have a story – we can see it in their eyes. They really even don’t need to tell us,” says Martha Gibson-Wolfe, one of the rescuers.

Volunteers with Ginger’s Pet Rescue say the dogs were on Death Row – frightened and confused – animals of all sizes, breeds and backgrounds.

All were lost, separated or abandoned by their families during the chaos of the recent wildfires in Southern California.

Animal shelters there could no longer house them all, and many were on the verge of being euthanized, until this group saved them.

“You see all these really nice dogs, and you think if the truck was just a few days later or even just a few hours later, they could be put to sleep,” says rescuer Catherine Hannan.

The forgotten dogs are searching for a new start.

WE HAVE 32 MORE FOREST FIRE DOGS COMING THIS SUNDAY ~ NOVEMBER 22th !!!

We desperately need fosters homes for this coming Sunday’s arrival!

The last four Sundays we took in over 120 dogs that were saved out of the California Forest Fires in San Bernardino.

There are over 800 acres on fire and over 1300 Firefighters and all these forgotten dogs were refused by the local shelter due to lack of space.

They give us two options either board them or euthanize them and because these dogs are so great we are boarding them & saving them and bringing them up to Seattle 30 dogs at a time !!!

These dogs are so lucky to be saved as many dogs did not make it out alive.

We are making arrangements to bring them up here on Sunday ~ November 22nd.

Please ask around to your friends, family and co workers for a month or two of loving a dog in desperate need.

* Must fill out a Foster Application

Date of Arrival: November 22nd SUNDAY

Time: Late Afternoon

Place: South Seattle

* Remember it’s all about saving one dog at a time !

* Please e-mail me and let me know that you can help !

If you can not foster, donations would be deeply appreciated as many of the incoming dogs are sick.

* Leashes, Collars, Dog Food, Crates, Pee Pads would be great and you can drop off to address below!

Our address is 322 North 105th ~ Seattle, Wash 98133

You can PayPal your donation to our website at www.gingerspetrescue.org, contact via email.

Thank You and all the dogs really appreciate all your help!

A good Samaritan, Gary DeNicola, rescued a stray dog running in traffic, most likely saving her life. What he didn’t realize at the time was he saved 10 lives, she was pregnant. When he picked up the dog she was starving and emaciated, it looked like she had been nursing but when he searched the area for puppies but didn’t find any.

He took the dog home and put her in his spacious backyard to keep her safe, he was worried about bringing her in because he has a 12-year-old and wasn’t sure how he’d react. DeNicola planned on dropping the dog off at the shelter the next day, things didn’t work out exactly as planned.

Here are the details from the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

That evening, on Sept. 27, DeNicola noticed the dog begin to hunker down in a garden bed. Next, she was giving birth to one, two, four, seven, and then nine black and tan puppies.

DeNicola began making calls to shelters and soon discovered many area animal rescue groups are at full capacity. People struggling financially had abandoned their animals, and many pets were turned out during the flood, he was told.

“And one shelter wouldn’t take the newborn pups until they were vaccinated,” he said. “I realized — they are mine.”

DeNicola is now raising the lucky litter on his own until he can find qualified, permanent homes. He built a special pen for the dogs in his basement, not wanting to mix the new deliveries with Tiger, who isn’t sure how to handle the strange sounds coming from below.

It’s always great to read a heartwarming animal story. A big thanks to DeNicola for stepping up to the plate and making a difference, we give him four big paws up.

If anyone is interested in adopting one of Ruby’s adorable puppies you can contact DeNicola via email.

A while back I was speaking with Dogster member Ron about his pup Takoda, a special needs dog. I asked if he would like to do an article on what it’s like to adopt a special needs or older dog. What you bring to their lives, and the unbelievable joy they bring to yours.

I recently received Ron’s response and it seems like the perfect post as American Humane’s Adopt-A-Dog Month comes to an end.

I guess you could say that research started when my wife and I adopted Takoda. Like Logan, he was a stud dog in a Puppy Mill, used and abused for the first three years of his life and then ready to be tossed away, along with four other Dobermans, when the people who owned the Mill decided they were no longer of use and were ready to toss them to a Kill Shelter. Thank God a Rescue Group heard about that and promptly rescued them all. If that hadn’t happened, we never would have known how much love a Rescued and Adopted dog, be it a Senior or Special Needs, has to give.

I wanted to really be able to tell you exactly what was needed to adopt that Special Needs, or Senior, dog so I joined several different groups to see what others had to say. I just wanted to read the posts and see what was being said from the heart, not from the mind. What I wanted was their feelings and comments that were spontaneous, not thought out. Those reasons and feelings that came from deep within.

I’ve been visiting, reading and taking notes for quite a while now and just knew a pattern would start forming rapidly. Well, after all this time that hasn’t happened. From what I read in all those posts, there really wasn’t anything specific about the people who adopted a Special Needs or Senior dog, they varied from young to old, from those with the ability to give the best of care to those who would have to scrounge a little to take care of their pet. There just didn’t seem to be anything specific that was needed.

True, it would be nice to have some extra time to share with a Special Needs, or Senior, dog but that wouldn’t be a necessary requirement. It really isn’t the time you share but the quality of the time spent together. Showing and letting that dog know how much they are wanted and loved and also being able to accept the love and devotion they give in return.

While it would be nice to have the ability to shower that Special Needs, or Senior dog, with toys, fancy beds and all the treats they would like, again that isn’t a requirement. Showering them with love, devotion and your company is all they want. Just having you as part of their life is more then enough. It’s the feelings, the love they feel, from and for you that matters.

I was starting to get a feeling for what I wanted to write and then I read your Tribute to Logan. That made me realize that there is something you need to adopt that Senior, or Special Needs, dog, something that money just can’t buy. Something everyone can have, if they just open their hearts and try. That something is a big heart.

True, a Senior dog is really an ideal candidate for human seniors, there is so much difference between them and a pup. They usually are house-broken and trained ( maybe not thoroughly but somewhat ) , more settled in their ways ( not hyper-active ), more willing to lay back and relax and a lot more things that suit the senior lifestyle. But, the same things that make it ideal for a senior to adopt also applies to a younger person who doesn’t have the necessary time to devote to training a younger dog.

True, a Special Needs dog will require more care and attention but if you can give them that, then you really need nothing special. Again, they can be ideally suited for a Senior since, like me, they have more time to devote to the dog. In Takoda’s case, being blind when we adopted him, he has bonded so tight to me ( my wife still works and is gone most days ) it is easy to see that I have become his eyes. He wants to be with me at all times and I guess that could present a problem for some people but he does get on just fine when he’s alone. Here I believe the main thing is not babying the dog but realizing they can usually get along just fine, on their own, if you just give them a chance.

I believe most anyone would get along just fine with a Senior or Special Needs dog, as long as they don’t let those facts overwhelm them. Just because they are a little old, or have a health problem, doesn’t mean they can’t give you love and devotion like any other dog. In fact, that is one thing I did find from the groups I joined. Most comments concerned just how much love and devotion the owner receives from their dogs. Be it a Senior or Special Needs, every owner told stories of the amount of love and devotion their dog gives. That’s why I say the only thing you really need, the one thing that will make adopting that Special Needs or Senior dog, is a Big Heart.

Why? You’ll need it to store all that love and devotion you’ll receive and all of the memories you’ll have and share. Your heart will grow larger with every one you adopt. Everyone you share a part of your life with and they share a part of theirs with you. So many memories, so many wonderful memories, that when the time comes and they make the Journey to the Bridge like all our pets do, the love, devotion and memories they leave behind will easily ease the pain of losing them. Your heart will grow larger with each new pet and the tears will always flow when they leave but those tears will make the love grow stronger and the willingness to accept the pain of losing them easier to accept.

No matter how many tears fall, they will never erase the love and devotion, the memories those Senior and Special Needs dogs leave in your heart. Yes, you need a very big heart to adopt a dog like that but just the willingness to adopt that first one will get your heart growing. Share the love and you too will have a Big Heart, a Very Big Heart.

Thank you Ron for sharing your story, and hopefully inspiring others to go out and adopt a special needs or senior dog.

I received a letter from a volunteer at the North Mecklenberg Animal Rescue about a beautiful girl named Hope, a throwaway who survived against the odds.

She is currently being fostered at a wonderful home but needs her own permanent loving forever home.

Hope was neglected and abused until, as a 6-8 month old puppy, being thrown into a rock quarry in an attempt to drown her. Her spirit and determination allowed her to fight for an indeterminate amount of time, acquiring significant injuries to her feet and legs as she tried desperately to free herself. Somehow, she found a small ledge, where she huddled for another indeterminate amount until Fire and Rescue rock climbed and rafted her out. By this point, she was totally catatonic and responsive due to her fear.

The reason my home was chosen for foster care was because of the very special pack of rescued animals who lives here. There is a rescued fighting dog who was used as bait and subsequently lost a rear leg and underwent 3 surgeries, another dog that was abandoned twice before the age of 3 months who is now a Therapy Dog for humans and other animals, and three elderly cats who were abandoned at various stages in their life. They now work together to help other animals adjust and recover from bad situations. One of these cats keeps all arriving foster dogs company by spending the night sleeping in front of their crates, as well as by engaging in boxing matches with the dogs regardless of their size.

The other two cats perform grooming rituals on the foster animals, washing faces, ears and paws. The dogs patiently engage the newcomers, coaxing them out of their shells, educating the traumatized dogs about how to join a pack.

Within hours, this group had enticed Hope to let her guard down and engage in a bit of play with them. In a few days, she began to initiate interaction with me. In a week, she was allowing select strangers to approach her. In just a matter of a month or two, Hope transformed from catatonia into a happy, playful, engaging dog who has adopted the philosophy of “I’ve never met a stranger”. People are shocked to hear of her past when they meet her….they see her as a typical puppy.

We all knew that the magical pack could bring Hope around. We assumed that because of her public story (she was in the newspaper, and has her own journal on our website) she would find a home quickly. But despite the fact that Hope loves people–including kids, other dogs, and cats, and despite her good manners in a home environment, she has had little to no interest from potential adopters.

Unfortunately, in this tough economy, many people have chosen to forgo the added expense of a pet. Not only are people not adopting, many are actually dropping their family pets off at the pound to cut costs.

This is not a good time to be a dog without a home. But Hope is a fighter, and a survivor, and we continue to fight for her. We have spread the word about this wonderful girl in as many ways as we could think of.

Thank you to Amy, the volunteer at the shelter who sent me the letter as well as Hope’s foster, for showing her that people are good. Let’s see if we can’t help find this beautiful girl a home in time for Christmas, what a gift that would be. If you are interested in Hope please contact the North Mecklenburg Animal Rescue for further information. You can also read Hope’s daily journal and see a video of this amazing girl, you’ll fall in love when you see her playing with the other pups.

Please tell everyone you know about Hope, send out emails, post and crosspost. If we all work together we can find her the home she deserves. After all, where there’s faith, there’s HOPE.

On October 2nd I posted It’s Time To Celebrate Adopt-A-Dog Month. I put some zealies up for grabs, all you had to do was send me your dog’s rescue story for a chance to win. The winner would be featured on the blog and their goodie stash would get richer by 50 zealies.

The winner is The Wee Beasties, a very cute group of pups, and their mom Charlotte. You’ll see from the stories below why people like Charlotte are the unsung heroes of the world and a true inspiration.

Peaches, a 7 year old chihuahua was found in a water-filled ditch in Tennessee. She was emaciated, had a broken jaw with a bad wire job and kennel cough. A shelter volunteer took pity on her, took her home and reached out to rescues. A rescue in Missouri took her in and listed her on Petfinder. We were lucky enough to be chosen to adopt her in December 2006. She was terrified of men but with time, care and lots of treats, my husband was able to win her over. She’s now a true Daddy’s girl and loving spending her golden years with us.

Sam, a 3 year old chihuahua mix, came into the shelter where I volunteer. He had been abandoned and was starved. Weeks passed, other dogs came and went but but no one wanted Sam. He did get one home who promptly returned him, claiming that he’d bitten their baby. After questioning, they admitted there was no bite- they just didn’t want him. I took him home and he’s happier than ever. He does have some separation anxiety and phobia of storms but we’re working on that.

Rufus (another chihuahua) also came into the shelter, about a month after we got Sam. He was bald, emaciated, half-blind and on the short-list for euthanasia due to his age and condition. So…another addition to the family. We’ve decided he’s about 13 and may not have many years left but what he does have will be spent here in comfort with us. He’s done very well in the year that we’ve had him. His fur is grown back and he’s in great condition for his age.

Jax is our most recent foster from the shelter. At least, we intend for him to be a foster success instead of a foster failure like Sam and Rufus were. BOL!

He’s a 3-legged chihuahua/basenji mix (we think) and is about 5 years old. He’s been to two foster homes, the first one lost him before they ever got him in the house. His first adoptive home backed out before they even met him. We’re working to get him back to a healthy weight so he can find a really great forever home.

Adoption is so important. Our shelters are full and killing every day. Our rescues are full to bursting and can’t save them all. If anyone can add just one more dog to their home, they need to do so.

I want to thank Charlotte for sending over her wonderful stories of rescue, and for all the work she does to help those who have no voice.

Charlotte, you are a true hero.

A Sicilian woman told her husband she was taking their dog for a walk. A bit later the husband was out with the kids when he heard a familiar bark. He found his pup tied to a tree in front of a bar.

According to the Metro.co.uk, the husband looked in the bar and found his wife in a passionate embrace with the owner. This probably won’t come as a surprise, the couple is planning on divorcing. I wonder if there will be a custody fight over the dog? I’m thinking the dog goes with the husband.

If anyone out there needs to keep their spouse in line, Princeton is up for adoption. He’s 3-months-old and was surrendered by the breeder who could not get him adopted. He is on Dogster’s Dog Adoption & Rescue Center, totally unrelated to the story, there was no picture of their Yorkie.
