World’s Oldest Dog Dies At 21
Horst Hoefinger

Chanel, a dachshund,  turned 21-years-old  on May 6th and became the oldest living dog on record.   Sadly, I just found out that she has passed away. On Friday, August 28th she went to Rainbow Bridge at the tender age of 147-years-old.

She was adopted by Karl and Denice Shaughnessy from a shelter in Newport News, VA. when she was only 6 weeks old. She appeared on the Today Show in May to commemorate her Woofday  wearing tinted goggles for her cataracts and a sweater because she was sensitive to the cold. After the show aired she celebrated with a big Manhattan Woofday bash.

(A.P.) Guinness World Records officials presented Chanel with a certificate as the world’s oldest dog at a Manhattan birthday bash hosted by a private pet food company in May.

Chanel loved the party, especially the cake, which had a peanut butter flavor and had been made for dogs, Denice Shaughnessy said.

There have been claims of older dogs but Guinness World Records has not yet been able to verify any birth records. According to Janelle Derouen her dog Max is 26-years-old. She said GWR officials are trying to verify this information, although they will not confirm this.

May I See Your ID?
Horst Hoefinger

I don’t think a cute little doxin named Chanel has heard that question for quite a while.  Today she turned  21-years-old and just became the oldest living dog on record. She even had a guest appearance on the Today Show this morning.  What’s next, Willard Scott announcing her face on a Smucker’s jar?

She’s the world’s oldest pooch, with 21 years under her collar, but she never learned how to beg.

“She’s independent. If she didn’t want to do something, she had a look she would give, and she usually got her way,” Long Islander Denice Shaughnessy joked of her aging dachshund, Chanel, whose 147th birthday — in people years — is today.

Chanel took the title as the oldest dog last spring when a 28-year-old beagle from Virginia died.

Chanel is celebrating this milestone with a woofday bash in Manhattan. Now that’s a girl who knows how to party in style. We hope she has a wonderful day hanging with her pup pals. Happy Woofday!

Thanks to our Catster buddy Junior for meowing this to me.

Help Holly Live
Horst Hoefinger

Holly is a beautiful Doxie who has until 5pm on Tuesday to find a home or she will be put down. It’s so sad that this innocent girl will never have a chance to live because no one came to claim her.

TUESDAY AT 5PM HOLLY WILL BE PUT DOWN

DEAR FRIENDS,

THIS SWEET LITTLE GIRL WAS FOUND BY COLLETON COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL LAST WEDNESDAY,  SHE HAD BEEN HIT BY A TRUCK.  SHE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL VET, XRAYS WERE DONE AND SHE HAS A FRACTURED HIP AND IT APPEARS HER BLADDER HAS BEEN PUSHED BACK. SHELTER IS LIMITING HER MOVEMENT AND SHE HAS BEEN ABLE TO URINATE SOME BUT THEY DON’T HAVE THE FUNDS FOR SURGERY. SHE HAS BEEN ON PAIN PILLS AND DOESN’T DESERVE TO DIE.  SHE’S ONLY AROUND 2 OR 3-YEARS-OLD.

DENNIS SOULE, SHELTER WORKER, HAS CANVASSED THE NEIGHBORHOOD LOOKING FOR HER OWNER AND SHE HAS BEEN SCANNED FOR A MICROCHIP. THEY EVEN TRIED TO TRACE THE OWNER BY THE TRAINING COLLAR SHE HAD ON…NO LUCK.

I’VE WORKED WITH THIS SHELTER FOR OVER 7 YEARS AND MANY, MANY POSITIVE CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE WITH NEW DIRECTOR AND ACTIVELY MARKETING THEIR ANIMALS ON PETFINDER; BUT THEY STAY FULL AND HAVE NO RESOURCES.

PLEASE CONTACT BY PHONE ONLY: HE HAS NO EMAIL

Linky And Dillon Adoption Update
Horst Hoefinger

On December 26th I posted a storyabout Linky and Dillon, two pups who needed a new home after their owner Joseph Derrick died.

The pups, a Chihuahua and Dachshund, were lifelong friends and had been brought to Jacksonville Animal Care and Control shelter after Mr. Derrick  was struck and killed by a car.

The shelter wanted to keep the dogs together, and thanks to Jody Kinney they were able to. She watched the story on the news and just knew she had to make them part of her family. Recently, there has been a little change of plans when a long lost doggy relative (sort of) came forward.

After all, if the 14-year-old dog has any family around, it’s Cubbedge.

Now, Linky and his best pal Dillon have a new bed to snuggle in by the mantle of Cubbedge’s North Jacksonville home.

As it turns out, Cubbedge’s mother, Camilla Jean Hart used to date Derrick.

Hart had Linky for about seven years and, when she fell ill, she let Derrick have Linky until she got better. Hart, though, never got better and died in 2002.

Cubbedge was traveling a lot for work at the time and knew how much Derrick liked Linky, so she didn’t want to split them up.

Cubbedge and Derrick lost touch over the years, though she says she thought of Linky often.

When she learned in media reports that Derrick was killed and Linky was up for adoption, she tried to find Kinney so she could see Linky.

Kinney agreed, then asked Cubbedge if she’d like to take Linky home.

Cubbedge knew, though, that Linky and Dillon, a Dachshund, were a package deal. As Linky’s eyesight has deteriorated, he’s come to lean on his pal.

So now Cubbedge has two new old dogs.

Jody Kinney  deserves kudos for two selfless deeds, adopting the dogs and then being compassionate enough to give them up.

We hope the pups enjoy their new, and hopefully final, home.

Thanks to Nancy for barking this story to me.

Young Boy With Cancer Has Puppy Stolen
Horst Hoefinger

It doesn’t get much lower than this.  A  very brave little boy, Ryan Morgan,  who has been fighting cancer for four years is now fighting to get his puppy back.

The Dachshund puppy was given to Ryan for his 10th birthday. Two weeks ago thieves broke into his Barrow County (GA) home and stole the puppy.

Even worse is that detectives think the culprits know Ryan Morgan and are aware that he is sick, according to Channel 11 Alive News in Atlanta.

Ryan was diagnosed with neuroblastoma four years ago and has been battling the illness since then, the station reported.

For his 10th birthday in July, his parents bought him a miniature dachshund to cheer him up. He named her Dixie.

“Whenever I went to the hospital or something, I would always think of her, and it would make me happier,” Ryan told the station. “I really like her. She’s cute.”

This is a despicable act, the offenders need to arrested and punished accordingly.  Let’s help bring Ryan’s puppy home. Anyone with any information about the case is urged to call the Barrow County Sheriff’s Department at (770) 307-3084.

1,000 Dogs Rescued From Breeder
Horst Hoefinger

A breeder in Parkersburg, W. VA. area  has surrendered 1,000 dogs to the humane society.

While there were no signs that the purebred dachshunds had been abused, officials say it would be impossible for any human being to properly care for that many animals.

The board president for the Humane Society in Parkersburg, Carrie Roe, stated many of the dogs have never been touched by a human.

Sheriff’s deputies investigating possible dog-related pollution found the dogs Saturday while executing a search warrant on the property.

Wood County Prosecutor Ginny Conley says the owner hasn’t been cited for animal neglect but has agreed to never operate a dog-breeding business again.

The rescue operation could cost over $100,000 placing a tremendous strain on the Humane Society of Parkersburg. Below is information for anyone who would like to make a donation or potentially adopt one of these precious dogs.

If you would like to assist the HSOP at this time of great need, we are accepting monetary donations to help cover the costs of this effort. We are also in need of clean towels and rolled newspapers. All donations should be taken directly to the main Shelter at 29th and Poplar.

People interested in volunteering for the effort should call the Shelter first at 304-422-5541 and leave a message on the Volunteer line. We appreciate all volunteers, but in order for things to work smoothly we must schedule volunteers for needed jobs. So PLEASE call first and leave a message of what you can do and when you are available. We’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

While some of the surrrendered animals will be made available for adoption locally, they will not be available until August 30th and will be adopted out using our normal adoption process. See Adoption Process on this website. Many of the animals will be going to rescues around the nation that are better equipped to deal with puppy mill animals, but animals that we feel are appropriate for local adopiton, will be available beginning on that date.
