Beagle Shoe Thief on the Loose
Horst Hoefinger

All right, which of you Beagle owners out there needs to fess up about your shoe fetish?  C’mon, give it up.

Don’t know what I’m barking about? Then read about the mysterious disappearance of shoes in Waveland, Indiana.

Shoes left outdoors in the Montgomery County community of Waveland began disappearing one by one in June, reappearing near the town’s fire station.

Acting town marshal Rob Kiger and others have seen a stray brown and white dog, possibly a beagle, around town carrying a shoe in its mouth. Others have seen the dog lying in the sun near the fire station.

Kiger says he’s tried to take the canine shoe bandit into custody, but it runs away every time he gets close.

You think this is how Tige from Buster Brown got his start?

80 Dogs Killed Legally
Horst Hoefinger

What is wrong with people? Seriously. I just came across this story and was reminded of the depths to which humanity can go.

Two Berks County commercial kennel operators shot and killed 80 dogs after dog wardens ordered some of the animals be examined by veterinarians, state dog law enforcement officials said Tuesday.

And because they broke no current Pennsylvania law by slaughtering the dogs, animal advocates and some lawmakers are outraged.

Elmer Zimmerman of Kutztown shot 70 dogs after an inspection last month, officials of the Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement said.

His brother, Ammon Zimmerman, operator of a kennel next door, shot 10 of his own dogs, officials said.

These are kennel owners! You’d think they were in this profession because they love animals. How naive of me to think that. It’s all about the dollar.

“We went out on July 24 and inspected Elmer’s kennel. There were various kennel violations we said we’d be citing them for, and the warden ordered vet checks on 39 dogs,” said Jessie Smith, deputy secretary of the Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement. “(Elmer Zimmerman) told the warden, ‘I think I’m going out of business.’ We suggested that he surrender the dogs, but he was not agreeable to that. Then he called the warden back over the weekend and said he shot the dogs.”

He brutally shot them because he couldn’t afford to take care of them. Why not just give them up?

Still, she said she doesn’t know why the Zimmermans chose to kill their breeder dogs rather than turn them over to any of the dozens of shelters, rescue groups and others willing to take even sick and ailing animals discarded by commercial breeding kennels.

“Unfortunately, under current law, kennel owners may kill their dogs for any reason, even if it is simply to save money,” H.B. 2525’s prime sponsor Rep. James E. Casorio Jr. of Westmoreland County wrote in a Friday press release in response to the Zimmerman killings.

The incident has outraged animal advocates and strengthened resolve of backers of House Bill 2525, which seeks to improve life for dogs living in the state’s commercial breeding kennels. H.B. 2525 includes a provision that would prohibit commercial breeders from shooting their own dogs by requiring euthanization by a veterinarian.

If you live in Pennsylvania, let your local representative know that you support this legislation.

Couple Charged For Leaving Dog In Hot Car
Horst Hoefinger

A couple in Waltham, MA left their 3 year old  french bulldog in a hot car for over a half hour while they were at the shopping mall.  They called the police when they returned to their car  and found she was “limp and unconscious”.

When police arrived at the scene, the dog was taken to Watertown Animal Hospital. Doctors tried to revive her but failed.

A doctor told police that the dog’s temperature was in excess of 106 degrees Fahrenheit. Normal body temperature for dogs ranges from 100.5 to 102.5 F.

The couple told the police they took their dog with them because they were afraid she would pee in the house if left home alone.  If you’re not intelligent enough to know to buy your dog a crate rather than putting her in an unattended hot car you should not be allowed to own animals.  Let’s just hope these people don’t have children.

Animal Control Officer Karen O’Reilly said causing an animal to be subjected to unnecessary cruelty or suffering is a felony in Massachusetts, and is punishable by imprisonment for up to two and a half years and a fine of $2,500.

With any luck, this couple will have the next 912 days behind bars to think about that fateful decision.

Wrongful Poop Gets Righted
Horst Hoefinger

Here’s a light hearted story to start off your week.

A DOG owner, who tried to prove the difference between labrador and poodle poo to council officials, has been given the benefit of the doubt by magistrates.

For Elliott the arthritic Labrador landed David Murray in court after his old legs gave way and he was wrongly accused of pooping on the pavement.

Mr Murray was handed a £50 fixed fine by wardens for dog fouling in the street.

But the 45-year-old refused to pay, claiming the mess did not belong to 11-year-old Elliott, who had only squatted because his back legs had given way.

He refused to pay and was taken to court after insisting that the dirty deed had been carried out by a poodle.

Mr Murray even bagged the offending mess before collecting a sample from Elliott and then took them to the offices of Hartlepool Borough Council to “provide a comparison” - demanding officials send the number twos away to be tested. They refused.

OK, I have to ask…how many of you would go this extreme to prove your dog’s innocence? … and who knew there was a difference between lab and poodle doo?

I love the sign Mr. Murray created for Elliott to wear. It reads “Not Guilty. Squatting - but not dropping”

I could use that for my girl Copper. She’s a squatter regardless of whether she’s doing a number one or a two.

It’s good to see the magistrates cleared Mr. Murray and Elliott of any wrong pooing. The last thing anyone wanted was this to turn into a smear campaign : )
