Photo Contest Winner for 8/16/2009
Mark Rogers

Well, Dogsters, you’ve been busy coming up with great captions for the last contest during my week off. This week’s winner is Sampson, who gets props for managing to include a Jerry Lee Lewis reference in a photo of a Chihuahua. Sampson, those Zealies will be on their way soon.

The next contest is on its way tomorrow.

Photo Caption Contest: Flower Power
Mark Rogers

I photographed this little Chihuahua named Flower last year and this photo of her with a favorite toy always makes me laugh. Dogsters, it’s up to you to make me laugh even harder with your caption suggestions. Enter your ideas for what Flower was thinking by commenting on this post below and you might be the winner of a 50-Zealie prize.

You’ve got extra time to come up with a winner, too, because this contest will be up for two weeks while I take a little time off to recharge and take more funny photos for this weekly event.
The winner will be announced on Monday, August 17th. Have fun!

Linky And Dillon Adoption Update
Horst Hoefinger

On December 26th I posted a storyabout Linky and Dillon, two pups who needed a new home after their owner Joseph Derrick died.

The pups, a Chihuahua and Dachshund, were lifelong friends and had been brought to Jacksonville Animal Care and Control shelter after Mr. Derrick  was struck and killed by a car.

The shelter wanted to keep the dogs together, and thanks to Jody Kinney they were able to. She watched the story on the news and just knew she had to make them part of her family. Recently, there has been a little change of plans when a long lost doggy relative (sort of) came forward.

After all, if the 14-year-old dog has any family around, it’s Cubbedge.

Now, Linky and his best pal Dillon have a new bed to snuggle in by the mantle of Cubbedge’s North Jacksonville home.

As it turns out, Cubbedge’s mother, Camilla Jean Hart used to date Derrick.

Hart had Linky for about seven years and, when she fell ill, she let Derrick have Linky until she got better. Hart, though, never got better and died in 2002.

Cubbedge was traveling a lot for work at the time and knew how much Derrick liked Linky, so she didn’t want to split them up.

Cubbedge and Derrick lost touch over the years, though she says she thought of Linky often.

When she learned in media reports that Derrick was killed and Linky was up for adoption, she tried to find Kinney so she could see Linky.

Kinney agreed, then asked Cubbedge if she’d like to take Linky home.

Cubbedge knew, though, that Linky and Dillon, a Dachshund, were a package deal. As Linky’s eyesight has deteriorated, he’s come to lean on his pal.

So now Cubbedge has two new old dogs.

Jody Kinney  deserves kudos for two selfless deeds, adopting the dogs and then being compassionate enough to give them up.

We hope the pups enjoy their new, and hopefully final, home.

Thanks to Nancy for barking this story to me.

Photo Contest Winner for 1/12/2009
Mark Rogers

I had a feeling last week when the photo contest was posted that the potty-humor factor would make it a popular one. Dogsters, you did not disappoint. Selecting the winner was tough–as it usually is these days–so to pick the champ I had to make sure the response was a) funny and b) on topic.

Sadie Lickin’s tallied up an A+ in each column with her entry this week and runs away with the 50 Zealie prize. Kudos, Sadie!!

Be on the lookout for tomorrow’s contest. I’m going to keep with both the potty humor and bodily function theme so I’m expecting lots and lots of good bad entries.
