Photo Caption Contest Winner for 7/13/2009
Mark Rogers

Sometimes a contest winner just leaps out at you and this week’s champ is just such a case. Between the wit of the quip and the tie-in with the dog breeds this was a surefire winner from Reba, who should do a quick victory lap before spending her Zealies.

A new contest is on its way tomorrow

Photo Contest Winner for 4/20/2009
Mark Rogers

Looks like the Basset Hound drew quite a crowd. We had over 80 entries this week but at the end of the day Tipper’s Mom is the champ with her spot-on suggestion. Well done!!!

I also want to thank those of you who’ve made suggestions for spicing up this contest a bit — there have been quite a few good ones. I’m going to keep gathering feedback over the next few weeks so if you have thoughts or ideas please post them in the comment section for this post.

Whooo’se Your Buddy?
Horst Hoefinger

Here’s a cute story about two unlikely pals, opposites really do attract.

Beryl the Basset Hound, who is a grand old dame at 16 years old, and four-year-old tawny owl Wol struck up a friendship when their owner realised they both loved watching television in the evenings.

Sara Ross, who shares her home in Tenterden, Kent, with the animals said: “They are both rescue animals and they’re like best buddies. Wol needs full-time care and one day I was giving him a bit of exercise and he just plonked down on Beryl’s back. She doesn’t mind, she’s really laid back and a bit of a pussycat really.

These two even hang out and watch television together, they love nature documentaries.  Could they be any cuter?

Dogsters,  you must really have the holiday spirit this year because almost 150 of you contributed to last week’s post — that’s the second most number ever since we started this summer. I also have tip my hat to everyone for all the excellent entries. My gut is still sore from all the belly laughs you gave me and boy did you make it exceedingly difficult to pick a winner.

Dori Ruby & Jaime, congrats to you for your hysterical entry.

Be on the look out for another contest starting tomorrow…

Photo Contest: Holidays are Here Already
Mark Rogers

Believe it or not but I’m already starting to get requests for holiday photos (and we just had Halloween). So, to get into the spirit of things I thought I’d celebrate the first photo contest in November with a holiday theme. Be on the lookout for more of these as the season progresses.

To win 25 Zealies make a comment below with what you think Mr Basset Claus was thinking at the time this photo was taken. The winner will be announced next Monday, November 10th.

Good Luck

Wow, another tough choice for me this week. The baying Basset inspired quite a few award-worthy quotes but, in the end, Jamee Fry came through in the clutch and walked away with the Zealies. You can all look forward to another challenging entry tomorrow.

Photo Contest: Basset Case
Mark Rogers

With some dog breeds it’s almost impossible to take a shot that’s not funny — Basset Hounds being a distinctive case in point. I look forward to a multitude of humorous suggestions this week.

Give me your input for what that pup’s thinking by commenting below and I’ll announce the winning quote next Monday, October 27th. Winner gets 25 Zealies

Have at it, Dogsters!

Olympians at the Gate
Horst Hoefinger

It’s time for the Beijing Olympics folks. Of course, if you’ve spent more than ten seconds on any NBC channel, you already know that.

The Olympics are a time when childhood dreams turn into reality for thousands of athletes, and a chance for a few of them to have their faces on a Wheaties box.  I know I’ll be watching, along with the ‘kids’, as the drama unfolds.

Since we’re dog lovers here, I’ll take this opportunity to highlight some Olympic caliber records you aren’t likely to see challenged during the 3,600 hours of NBC’s coverage.

-  In 2004, citizens of St. Joseph, Illinois witnessed Olympian hopeful Tigger recording the largest ear wingspan (27.25″ not counting the head) ever documented.  He thanks Bugs Bunny for inspiring him to forgo social norms and grow his ears so long.

- On the night of October 7th, 2006, Cinderella May broke the canine high jump record with a leap of 5′ 8″ (172.7cm).  It has yet to be determined where the greyhound learned to do the Fosbury Flop.

- Quebec City, Canada was the sight of one of the  most amazing achievements in canine and automobile history. Here, on September 1st 2004, a border-collie named Striker managed to record the fastest time ever in the ‘rolling down a non-electric car window’ category. His 11.34 second performance broke the mythical 11.5 barrier most experts thought would never be broken.

- Jimmy Connors never did it, neither did Andre Agassi or even Chris Evert, but a golden retriever named Augie didn’t have any problem achieving it. What was it? The world record for the most tennis balls held in the mouth. On July 6th in 2003, in Dallas, TX Augie managed to open two cans of tennis balls and stick five of the six balls into his mouth all at one time. Now that’s a dog that could use a DogPause Bowl.

Although those records are impressive, I know there must be some fuzzy muzzle record holders in this audience.  For instance, Copper holds the ten second record for most tail wags across a person’s face. I have the red lashes on my noggin’ to prove it.

So tell me, do you have a record holder who shares your house with you? If so, what’s the record?
