As I’m perusing the internet this morning I come across an article on dog books by Jill Rosen, she writes the Unleashed column for the Baltimore Sun. Today’s article, Drowning In Dog Books: Which Titles Rise To The Top?, mentions some dog books she has sitting on her desk and what’s there but Bo’s book BAD TO THE BONE : Memoir Of A Rebel Doggie Blogger.

She wants to know what dog books readers are putting on their holiday lists and recommending to friends. Please help Bo get to the top, here are the details from the Baltimore Sun.

There are seriously, seriously, seriously sooooo many dog books out there, I’m starting to lose track. At least a couple times a week a new one or two arrives in the mail.

There are heartwarming memoirs of man and beast, manuals for keeping the hound healthy, those that explore ways to understand the canine.

It seems that ever since Marley & Me skyrocketed to the top of the bestseller list, leaving sequels, a movie and who-knows-how-much-money and wet tissues in its wake, dog lovers have gotten really busy typing.

So here’s the question. I’m sitting here surrounded by new (and new-ish) titles including Speaking for Spot, The Wolf in the Parlor, Inside of a Dog, Marley & Me, To the Rescue, Power of the Dog, Bad to the Bone, Dogtown, Good Dogs Doing Good, Happy Dog, Fetching Dylan, Paws & Effect…the list goes on.

Which of these books are tops on your holiday wish list? And, more importantly, which dog books are front and center on your shelf, the ones you recommend to folks, the ones you’d read again if you had the time, the ones you found most meaningful….

Please share. A lot of us would love to know how to separate the dog lit wheat from the chaff.

And….yes….there will be booty sent out to some of those that comment.

For those of you that read BAD TO THE BONE: Memoir Of A Rebel Doggie Blogger Bo would be eternally grateful if you would leave a comment in the comment section of the Baltimore Sun (click on the link, you’ll go directly to the article) recommending it, sharing why you enjoyed it, or if you haven’t read it yet that it’s on your holiday wish list.

If you do, leave your name here and you’ll be entered to win a pawtograhped copy of Bo’s book. Want to order the pawfect holiday gift for yourself or the dog lover in your life, click here!

Thanks Dogsters!

* Jill Rosen…if you read this Bo loves your column and would be thrilled if you interview him!

As a fun way to kick off the start of the holidays we’re offering up three pawtographed copies of Bo’s book BAD TO THE BONE: Memoir Of A Rebel Doggie Blogger.

Just in time for the holiday season, “Bad to the Bone: Memoir of a Rebel Doggie Blogger (published by Kensington Books), the first memoir ever written by a dog, is a laugh-out-loud look at how a canine and two seemingly normal people wreak havoc on an unsuspecting world while creating a lifelong bond in the process.

Bo Hoefinger is not your everyday, run of the mill author; he’s a mixed-breed shelter dog with an attitude.

Let’s get this clear right away: I’m a dog.

I’m 1′10″ and weigh 63 lbs, and although I’m a mutt on the outside, I’m a purebred on the inside. My good nature comes from the Golden Retriever side of the family, while my stubbornness is clearly from my Chowchow bloodlines. I’ve got Rastafarian ears, a black tongue for licking, and paws that should be on a dog twice my size.

I type 60 words a minute.

My name is Bo, and this is my story.

From shelter dog reject to beloved pet and popular doggie blogger, Bo’s life has been anything but ordinary.

Join this incorrigible canine as he welcomes us into his life, complete with his wacky “parents,” a constipated feline housemate, and chipmunk warfare. All tales are 100% true and will put animal lovers in fits of laughter. Bad to the Bone is an unforgettable, laugh-out-loud tale of love and loyalty that reveals the true heart of a modern American family.

To enter to win a copy just leave a comment in the comment section letting Bo know why you would like to read his book. The contest runs today through Monday, November 9th when I will choose the winners.

You can get a copy of BAD TO THE BONE on Amazon, click here, it’s the perfect stocking stuffer for the dog or dog lover in your life. Please bark the word about Bo’s book to all your pup pals, it’s not easy being a writer in a fur suit so we’re depending on word of mouth to help get news out.

* Thanks to my pal Flicka for making the book cover pic for me.

I want to let everyone who lives in the Atlanta area know that Horst is going to have a book signing at the Books-A-Million in Acworth, GA on Saturday. The store is located at 3372 Cobb Parkway in the Super Target plaza.

Come join us on October 17 th from 1-3 pm and get your very own pawtographed copy of BAD TO THE BONE: Memoir Of A Rebel Doggie Blogger. Grab a couple copies, it makes a great stocking stuffer.<a href="http://dogblog.dogster.com/2009/10/13/horsts-books-a-million-book-signing-grab-a-copy-for-a-holiday-gift/boxmas625065_1197824375/"rel="attachment wp-att-23571" >

On Thursday, October 15th Horst is going to be on Good Day Atlanta (Fox 5), between 9-10am. It’s his first TV appearance, we hope you’ll tune in or DVR him.

Once again I want to thank everyone for all their support, we couldn’t do this without you. We are still working very hard to get the word out about Bo’s book, if you’ve read it and enjoyed it please pass the word on to all your friends and family. The most powerful thing we have going for us right now is word of mouth, you would be amazed at the difference that can make.

We also appreciate those that left (or are going to) reviews on Amazon (or other book sites) because it really helps sell a book when potential buyers can read the great comments left by others. If you stop by a Borders or Barnes & Noble please request they carry Bo’s book. If you’re a Walmart shopper ask them to carry BAD TO THE BONE. We are determined to get Bo in all the bookstores, upfront where he belongs, with your help I know we can do it. Please post and crosspost about Bo, every little bit helps.

Want to buy a copy now, click here.

Here are some of the reviews we’ve been getting….

5.0 out of 5 stars The FUNNIEST book by a dog I ever read!!

October 10, 2009

By Nancy Houser (Central Nebraska) -

The book Bad to the Bone: Memoir of a Rebel Doggie Blogger has to be one of the funniest and most original books I have ever read. Where else can you spend hours laughing at a sneak-peak before sending a friend/family doggie-lover one of the most unique gifts they will ever have? In that case, you may have to order two — one for you and one as a gift!

Written by a “one-time” reject shelter dog who has his own blog online now ([...]) which is also hilariously funny….Bo tells it as he sees it. Coming from the school of hard-knocks, Bo is adopted by the Hoefingers and teaches them to care for him …. properly! And when they end up moving to Georgia, their list of pros and cons did not have Bo’s name on it, nor his best cat friend, Moose.

“My parents never considered the vast amount of land in our backyard I’d be giving up or the clear alpa dog stature I had achieved in the neighborhood. Nor was the fact considered what effect the sultry Southern weather would have on an extremely hairy dog. Nope, none of that mattered. This decision was ALL about them.”

Instead, Bo’s mother goes to the store and rents the movie “Gone with the Wind” prior to going house-hunting after they had moved to Georgia…..I tell no lies. This was done in order to forewarn Bo about their new living quarters so he would not be disappointed about where they would soon be living. This is just one of the many side-splitting moments in the book!

Buying this book is a once in a lifetime gift for yourself or someone else, a pathway to sheer adventure and pure warm fun…. from a dog’s point of view! And if that doesn’t get to your heart, nothing will.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tears of laughter

October 6, 2009

By Nancy “Checkers’ Mama” (PA, USA) -

OMD! I had tears of laughter streaming down my face as I read the book. You are an excellent writer, Bo, and I could totally relate! Anyone who has had the pleasure of the companionship of a dog should read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Run and put your paws on this book!

Sep 30 2009

By Josee Quirion -

If you do that you will become an instant fan of Bo ! He is not just cute, he is funny and very, very smart. You want to know what your dog think about you or humans, this is the book for you. If you want to spend good time smiling and laughing, it’s the book you have to read. Dear Bo, I hope that you already figure how you will manage your fan club because it will not be very long before you get one!

Dog Lady was kind enough to preview Bo’s book before it came out and gave him 5 paws up.

I want to thank all the Dogsters that have already ordered a copy of BAD TO THE BONE, we really appreciate the support. If you liked joining Bo on his adventures please leave a comment in Customer Reviews, Create Your Own Review on Amazon. Bo could really use the feedback and will send treats to the Dogsters who leave a nice message.

We need to get the word out about BAD TO THE BONE and would be extremely grateful if you would tell all your doggie loving pals about the book and ask them to do the same. It took three years to get this published, breaking into the literary would when you’re a writer in a fur suit is not easy, we need to show the publishers out there that the dog lovers of America are ready and willing to buy a memoir written through a dog.

From shelter dog reject to beloved pet and popular doggie blogger, Bo Hoefinger’s life has been anything but ordinary.

Join this incorrigible canine as he welcomes us into his life, complete with his wacky “parents,” a constipated feline housemate, and chipmunk warfare. Bad to the Bone is an unforgettable, laugh-out-loud tale of love and loyalty that reveals the true heart of a modern American family.

A frequent contributor to local fence post 12, Bo continues his nonprofit work with the Beneath the Fence Society. In his spare time he dabbles in knocking over garbage pails, barking uncontrollably, and generally being a helpful force around the house.

He lives in Atlanta.

Grab a copy of BAD TO THE BONE for yourself and then a few for your dog loving friends. Can you think of a better gift for a dog lover than a book written by a dog? The holidays will be here before you know it and Bo thinks every dog in America, and beyond, should wake up x-mas morning to find a copy of his book in their stocking. It also works well as a gift for Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, Bo doesn’t discriminate against any breed or holiday.

Bo’s book is now available, you can order online at Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, BooksaMillion.com, indieBound.org, borders.com, or your favorite retailer. Spread the word to all your pup pals so they can get themselves a copy of the first memoir written by a dog ever published in non-fiction.

A big thank you goes out to the fine folks at Dogster HQ’s for all their support and help. A note of gratitude to all the Dogsters out there who believed in us and wanted to see a book written through a dog’s eyes, it’s you guys that helped make this happen.

Thank you to all!

If fur were gold I’d be drinking margaritas, on the rocks, on some warm island in the Caribbean. But it’s not, so I type this in a windowless room in my basement. There is hair on the rug, on my chair and in between the keys of my keyboard…and look at that, there’s also a few strands floating in my coffee.

Such is life when you choose to share your love with pets. As regular readers know, Lisa and I are the owners of three adoring dogs, each with their own unique hair style, and one feline. It makes quite the blend of fur, a premium blend if you will, worthy of inclusion in a home made sweater knitted by these fine folks.

The excess hair floating about the house doesn’t bother me much, I’m a man after all, and oblivious to dirt. Besides, the fur tumbleweeds that roll across the hard wood floors adds some charm to the house. Lisa on the other hand is a clean freak. She vacuums daily and has the Swiffer going a few times during the day.

Although I’d never mention this to her I have to say she may have won a few battles, but she’s definitely losing the war on fur (check under the bed honey, is it supposed to look like an old deserted Western town?).

So when the great folks at Dyson recently sent us one of their new vacuums, the DC28 Animal, to try out we were ecstatic. This particular model is designed specifically for people with pets, and hey, we’re people with pets! Plus, it has Airmuscle technology. Frankly I don’t know what that does, but it sounds cool.

The first thing that struck me was the simplicity setting up the vacuum. I kept making it more complicated than it needed to be and I felt like a monkey trying to put a square peg in a round hole. If I’d read the two step instructions, I would have been on my way to eating bananas a lot quicker. Dyson has done all the thinking for you.

After the set up came the true test; does it suck? Lisa had vacuumed the floors the night before we got The Animal so it was starting from a clean floor. Or so we thought. Holy mackerel, I could have built a sand sculpture with all the stuff the DC28 was picking up, or more precisely, a sand mermaid with chest hair and an afro.

The Animal’s telescoping handle means you don’t have to lug the vacuum up the stairs to clean them. It’s simple to pull the wand out and reach each stair one at a time. It’s great for getting bugs in high places, or that cob web in the corner that’s been taunting you for months, too.

Don’t be shy, go out and rescue this Animal from your local retail shelter today. You won’t be disappointed.
