This recall is a couple of months old but since people tend to keep canned goods around for a while I thought I’d err on the side of caution and let you know about it anyway.

New Era Canning Company (Botulism) Recall
(Includes large institutional-sized cans of all types of
beans, blackeye peas and asparagus)

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers about a potential Clostridium botulinum (C. botulinum) contamination of canned beans manufactured by New Era Canning Company, New Era, Mich. C. botulinum is the bacterium that causes botulism, which can be fatal. The company is broadening its nationwide recall of canned vegetable products for a third time.
This recall is intended to prevent further distribution of foods potentially contaminated with Clostridium botulinum (C. botulinum). The affected products are large institutional-sized cans, weighing between six and seven pounds, of various types of vegetables.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — Los Angeles, California — March 27, 2008 — Simply Fresh Fruit, of Los Angeles, California is recalling selected fresh cut fruit products which may contain cantaloupe which has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. On March 26, 2008, Simply Fresh was requested by its supplier, Tropifresh, Inc to recall products produced with cantaloupe from Agropecuaria Montelibano. Simply Fresh had begun to recover this product earlier, on March 24, based on a notice published By the U.S. FDA.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –Pompano Beach, FL — March 24, 2008 — Central American Produce, Inc. of Pompano Beach, FL announces a voluntary recall of cantaloupes grown, packed and shipped by an independent third-party grower, Agropecuaria Montelibano of San Lorenzo Valle, Honduras. The product was distributed nationwide and Canada. Based on current information, the cantaloupe grown, packed and shipped from Agropecuaria Montelibano appears to be associated with a Salmonella Litchfield outbreak in the United States and Canada.

Charlie’s Produce Spokane Recalls Cut Cantaloupe Products Because of Possible Health Risk
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — March 22, 2008 — Charlie’s Produce of Spokane, WA is recalling Charlie’s Produce Brand Cut Cantaloupe Products, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The Hartz Mountain Corporation Recalls Vitamin Care for Cats Because of Possible Health Risk
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — March 7, 2008 — The Hartz Mountain Corporation is voluntarily recalling a second specific lot of Hartz Vitamin Care for Cats due to concerns that bottles within the lot may have been potentially contaminated with Salmonella. Hartz is fully cooperating with the US Food and Drug Administration in this voluntary recall. Hartz recalled a specific lot code of Hartz Vitamin Care for Cats last November due to similar concerns. Both lot codes were manufactured for Hartz by UFAC (USA) Inc. in 2007, and were removed from distribution last November. However, bottles from the second lot had been shipped to customers prior to their having been removed from distribution.

Huge beef recall stems from Calif. plant

LOS ANGELES – The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Sunday ordered the recall of 143 million pounds of frozen beef from a California slaughterhouse, the subject of an animal-abuse investigation, that provided meat to school lunch programs.
Officials said it was the largest beef recall in the United States, surpassing a 1999 ban of 35 million pounds of ready-to-eat meats. No illnesses have been linked to the newly recalled meat, and officials said the health threat was likely small.

Good news — someone tested these pet foods. Bad news — they tested positive for melamine. I know these foods aren’t for dogs and cats but it suggests to me that the Chinese firms STILL don’t get it! Stop poisoning us and our pets!
We cannot let our guard down against Chinese foods! Before buying any pet foods, please check the country of origin. If it says “China” put it down!
