Woofstock 2008
Horst Hoefinger

One of Bo’s pals, Scamper,  informed him that it’ time to get ready for Woofstock 2008,  an event in Eureka, CA.  You can enter your best friend in the 13th annual mutt strut or just sit back and enjoy all the fun and activities. The annual festival is held to raise funds for the Sequoia Humane Society, a wonderful no-kill animal shelter.

Join us Sunday, September 7th at Halvorsen Park for the biggest canine event of the year! 100% of all funds raised go to support the adoption, spay/neuter & education programs of the Sequoia Humane Society. Spend the day in the sun with your canine companion-there will be Live Music, Local Vendors, Dog Contests, Food and Fine Brew. All ages are welcome!

The mutt strut raises money in support of homeless animals. Walkers raise pledges from friends, family, and co-workers. Scamper along with a few pals put together a group, Ladies And The Tramps,  in hopes of  raising $500 for this terrific cause.

The group is already up to $430, let’s see if we can help them reach their goal. If you would like to support Ladies And The Tramps you can go directly to their Woofstock page and make a donation.

Calling All “DAWGS”: Win 2 Nights At Dog Friendly B&B In Asheville, NC
Horst Hoefinger

I need a break. No, not a break off of a Kit Kat bar.  But a mini vacation. I know you’re probably looking for one too. Well, I’m here to help.  Here’s your chance to win a free, that’s right, free two night stay at a dog friendly bed & breakfast in Asheville, NC.

Bo recently found out that his good buddy, Ponder, runs a dog friendly B&B along with his family. I’m told his owners are only involved because somebody has to clean up after the guests. As Ponder says, “there isn’t a self respecting dog in the world that’s going clean sheets and do the windows. So I keep ‘em around.”

Well, Ponder has been looking to meet some of his dogster buddies, wet nose to wet nose, and has been gracious enough to offer the community a chance to win two nights’ free accommodations at his gorgeous bed and breakfast. Being a magnanimous owner, Ponder is also allowing parents to take part in this offer if accompanied by the winning dog.

Ponder Cove is located just 30 minutes from Asheville, NC. This dog friendly bed and breakfast country inn provides total seclusion, luxury accommodations and gourmet breakfasts.

To win Ponder Cove’s distinguished “How DAWGS Do Travel” Award it’s time to take keypad to paw and, in 100 words or less, write in the comments section below why you would be the best guest ever.

We want to hear about all your good manners and what you think makes the ultimate traveling “dawg”. The judging will be done by the Ponder Cove management team headed up by Ponder himself.

The contest will run today through August 31st. Get those paws typing, this one is too good to pass up. Good luck!!

FYI: I’m told that comments about how Spanish Water Dogs are the best breed ever will not improve your chances.

Man’s Best Friend
Horst Hoefinger

Man’s best friend, in this case, is woman’s best friend.   Borias , German Shepard extraordinaire, and his mom Tami.

When you see Tami Michaels and her dog Borias out for a run, the first thing you notice is they’re both just having a good time.

What you don’t see when you look at them is  Tami’s wheelchair,  or a woman with a disability.  She trained Borias, who she got as a pup, to be her service dog.  In return, Borias taught Tami how to be free from the chair.

“Being in a wheelchair has its limitations and I’m the type that I see an obstacle and I figure out a way to get around it. I don’t let things limit me, but definitely having him really feels like there are no limits. I can do whatever I want to do,” Tami said.

This amazing duo shows, while it’s not always easy dealing with a disability, with the right mindset and the help of a best friend  named Borias, anything can be overcome.

“He’s my best friend, he’s my soul mate. He’s like my better half… I’d be lost without him,” Tami said.

To watch Borias and Tami in action check out this video,  http://www.cbs8.com/flv/video_pop_hd3.php?startID=135535&cat=undefined.  It shows you don’t need wings to fly.

If you want to let Borias know how amazing you think he is, you can  stop by his Dogster page and leave him a bone.

A Big Woof from the New Blog Guy
Horst Hoefinger

Let me first say that it is an absolute honor to be Dogster’s new blogger. With Joy’s departure I know I have large shoes to fill (and no, I’m not saying Joy has big feet) and will strive to meet the high standard she has set.

My dogs, Bo and Copper, have been part of the Dogster community for some time, making new friends every day. The newest addition to the family, Logan, is finding this online world to his liking. Just yesterday he turned to me and said, “Woof”, which, loosely translated means “Did any Pup Pal requests come in for me?” I think he’s going to fit in quite nicely.

I’m looking forward to contributing to this dynamic, fun and educational site by bringing you up to date information on all things dog and continuing to make this blog an every day stop.

All I ask is that you continue to share your comments and ideas as we take a walk down the trail that is Dogster.com, for we all know a walk without checking messages is a walk spoiled.

Not only are Dogster’s great people and pawples, they’re talented too! Jackpot’s Tail: Lost in Las Vegas was written by one of our Dogsters (okay, she let her furmom get the credit). Not only that, but it’s really GOOD, too!

Have you recently adopted a furry family member and want to let your not-so-furry young ones know more about how their new furbrother or sister came to join your family? Then Jackpot’s Tail may be just the book for you!

Dogster Blue Still Missing After 1 Year, Wise Words from Dogster Lena Malik
Joy

Sometimes in the everyday chaos of caring for our furbabies we temporarily forget some very important truths. Thank you, Lena Malik, for reminding us that while our time with out furbabies is wonderful, it is also limited. We also need to keep the lost ones, like Blue, in our thoughts.

Lena Malik wrote:
Dear Joy,
Thursday, May 8th is a somber annifursary for many of us. Our dear friend BLUE will have been missing for a year.

I write in the spirit of all lost dogs wanting to go home to where they know they are wanted, missed and an integral part of the family who keeps on searching. I also write for all the humans having to deal with the uncertainties, the heartache and roller coaster of emotions trying to find their beloved pet. Hearing of incredible reunions and nearly impossible journeys back gives us hope while we try to cope with our own thoughts and emotions on how we would truly be, to survive and face each day not knowing and waiting, perhaps even with guilt or a thousand questions every day.
