Big Announcement — I’m Leaving For Love of Dog Blog
Joy

All good things come to an end. And it’s time for me to move on from the For Love of Dog Blog.

As of June 1st, I’ll be moving my online home back to my own blog, Joy Ward’s Writing Journal. I would love to have each and everyone one of my Dogster and Catster readers come visit with me and the Ward Pack over there. We won’t be barking as often as we do over here but I’ll be keeping up our same high standards.

Animal Minds
Joy

animal-minds-hdr.jpg

Dogsters and Catsters know that dogs, cats and others animalshave a different yet important type of intelligence. So this National Geographic article will probably not surprize you too much. Bit it will confirm some of what you already feel and know.

Personally, I’m thrilled to see this information talked about openly by reputable publications because there are way too many people who still believe that there is nothing we can learn from dogs and other animals.

Those of you who have visited me at the science fiction conventions know I am usually on panels about how humans view and write about non-humans. A few years ago I was on a panel with a successful writer who actually has a good-selling series with aliens. But he has little interest in non-human animals on THIS planet. When i asked him why he said it was because there was nothing else we could learn from other species on Earth. I hope this writer gets a chance to read this article. There are so many excellent scientists who know better. I hope the writer and others like him can learn from these true scientific pioneers.

There is so much we can learn about and from our canine and feline symbiotes, as well as the other species with whom we share this planet.

Thanks to Michael K. (who saw the convention panel with the other writer) for barking in this article from National Geographic.

Minds of their Own
Animals are smarter than you think.
By Virginia Morell
Photograph by Vincent J. Musi

In 1977 Irene Pepperberg, a recent graduate of Harvard University, did something very bold. At a time when animals still were considered automatons, she set out to find what was on another creature’s mind by talking to it. She brought a one-year-old African gray parrot she named Alex into her lab to teach him to reproduce the sounds of the English language. “I thought if he learned to communicate, I could ask him questions about how he sees the world.”

When Pepperberg began her dialogue with Alex, who died last September at the age of 31, many scientists believed animals were incapable of any thought. They were simply machines, robots programmed to react to stimuli but lacking the ability to think or feel. Any pet owner would disagree. We see the love in our dogs’ eyes and know that, of course, Spot has thoughts and emotions. But such claims remain highly controversial. Gut instinct is not science, and it is all too easy to project human thoughts and feelings onto another creature. How, then, does a scientist prove that an animal is capable of thinking—that it is able to acquire information about the world and act on it?

Miller Uses Lost Dog Ad to Advertise Beer
Joy

millerdog.jpg

Thanks to Jason for barking in this info about Miller Beer’s new ad campaign using fake lost dog ads spread around neighborhoods.

In my other life as a consultant I’ve seen a lot of insensitive ad campaigns launched by “creatives” who just want to get attention but this is pretty despicable and stupid. Miller is trying to virally promote Miller Beer with fake lost dog ads. Did anyone think this through? Unfortunately not.

Let’s see. Nail up posters in neighborhoods saying you’ve lost a dog so people will call in and get verbally spammed to drink Miller Beer. Did these “creatives” even stop to think that how poor an idea this was on soooo many levels?

Yes, the For Love of Dog Blog Is STILL Here!
Joy

If you’re reading this you may be wondering why am I telling you we’re still here. Well, it’s because I keep getting questions from Dogsters and Catsters who are having trouble finding the blog on the main Dogster page. I’ve even had people stop me in pet stores and ask if the blog is still running!

I’m blogging about this for those of you who found the blog through Google or because someone sent you a link. I hope you’ll come back, so I want to let you know how to find us again.

New Jersey’s Congo Takes Center Stage in Immigration Debate
Joy

As you may have noticed on the other post on this blog about Congo, there are really two debates going on: whether Congo’s behavior was appropriate and immigration. Me, I’m more concerned about Congo and the threat to him because he seems to have behaved EXACTLY the way he was supposed to and would be expected.

But it appears that some people are more concerned with the origin and legal status of the man who is the focus of the event, the worker. The recent ABC video makes some interesting points on this issue.

First, Congo’s family is upset that this discussion has become about immigration and not Congo. Next, Rivera’s lawyer is saying this is about racism. Let’s talk about that a moment.

Public Relations Tips for Rescuers and Other Animal Folks
Joy

joy.jpg

If there is anything to be learned from the Mutts & Moms debacle (and we are NOT going to rehash it) it is that most animal rescuers and other groups serving animals are not public relations savvy. Most of us who work with animals prefer to avoid those kinds of human interactions that involve dealing with the press.

As some of you may know, among my various activities, I have worked in public relations for going on two decades. So I thought I would offer you some public relations basics. These tips are designed to help you be ready when the media strikes.

Whoopi What Are You Thinking??? — Whoopi Goldberg Defends Michael Vick
Joy

whoopigoldberg.jpg

Whoopi, what are you thinking!?!?!?

First off, let me say that I think the world of Whoopi Goldberg. I admire her for her career and what she has accomplished in her life. I hoped that she would take the empty chair on the View. I loved her short-lived talk show (and I don’t generally like talk shows). Of all the people in the world I would love to interview, Whoopi has to be in top twenty. Have I impressed on you how highly I consider Ms. Goldberg?

Good, because now I’m going to get very harsh.

What the heck do you mean defending Vick by saying this is part of Southern culture?!?!? It is NOT part of Southern culture like bagels are part of NY culture or the beach is part of Southern CA culture. Dogfighting and cockfighting are done in the South by ignorant, racist trash (both white and black). I know because unlike you, Whoopi, I AM Southern. I was born in Alabama and spent most of my youth in Tennessee. I’ve seen much more of Georgia than the Atlanta airport.

I have traveled over vast areas of the South and in every Southern state. I have been at backwoods horse auctions and campgrounds you can only find with a guide. I love fried chicken, grits and fried okra. I’ve had close friends who were car racers, bull riders and hunters. If its in the South I’ve probably seen it, read it, eaten it or watched it. I am Southern for more generations than I can count. And I am deeply offended that anyone, much less a woman I consider a personal hero such as Whoopi Goldberg, would make a patently stupid and offensive comment that dogfighting is just part of the culture.

Is a Kitty Genovese-like murder (the young woman who was murdered in an alley and NO ONE responded or even called the police) part of NY culture? Are terrorist attacks on large buildings part of NY culture? Are Son of Sam like serial murders part of NY culture? Are Zodiac killers part of San Francisco culture? How about attacks on innocent individuals by mentally ill homeless people (an incident I personally witnessed) part of the Northern California culture? Of course not! But yet you in your ignorance want to say dogfighting (which is every bit as horrible as the events I mentioned) is part of Southern culture.

No, dogfighting belongs to useless, cruel people across the US and Canada. Southerners don’t own stupidity or evil behavior. Sure, there are many of these pieces of poop masquerading as humans in the South but I would bet you, Whoopi, that you have some of them living near you too. They are just as much your neighbors as they have been mine.

So, Whoopi, all that said, I’m going to ask you again — what were you thinking? Did you, like some of my African-American friends, think that animal protectors like me are only interested in bringing African-American offenders to justice? If so, think again. Protectors, like many Dogsters, have sought and gotten justice against people of all races. Did you think we were just picking on poor Michael? Nope, wrong again. I’d never even heard of him until the dogfighting charge broke. I would have been perfectly happy to go the rest of my life with never knowing his name.

Do you think dogfighting and similar cruel “entertainments” are of little concern to people trying to overcome racism, poor education and few good-paying jobs. Once again, think again. There are clear correlations between dogfighting and spousal abuse. Would you like to argue that we shouldn’t care about the roots of and the promulgation of violence against women and children? I’d like to hear you try but I suspect you’re too smart to take that side. Do you want to defend people of any color whose actions support violence? Then continue to defend Vick.

Vick is not an innocent victim. Vick is not a representative of Southern culture. Vick is a selfish, cruel man who thinks his pleasure is more important than the suffering of innocents, incuding dogs. He may or may not have “found Jesus.” That’s not my call to make. But I sure can tell you what the officials found on his property — lots and lots of tortured, dead dogs. Those are the irrefutable facts.

So Whoopi, please reconsider your support of this heartless murderer. Your support says one of two things about you; either you are hopelessly naive if you think he’s a victim or you are so amazingly prejudiced against Southerners and their culture that you would think this is acceptable. I think you’re not the former but I hope you’re not the latter.

If you want to speak to Dogsters and Catsters of all nationalities and races, drop me a line and we can talk. If you really want to defend Vick, you can start with us. We’re the ones who clean up after all the Vicks of this world. And we don’t look at race. A dog who has been tortured and murdered by a Caucasian suffers just as much as one who has been tortured by a Hispanic or African-American.

In the meantime, Whoopi, think again before you defend a man who is the opposite of everything your life has been and represented. You have always spoken for those who could not defend themselves against the cruel and remorseless. You have always stood for the empowerment of women and the protection of children. You have always been a shining light of hope and positive actions in a world where these things are all too rare. Michael Vick is none of these things. And in defending him, you tarnish your light and life.

Thanks to Yahoo TV for this article.

Goldberg defends Vick in `View’ debut

So much for the sedate alternative to Rosie O’Donnell on “The View.”

Vick Dogs — 53 Seconds of Silence for the Forgotten
Joy

vickdog.jpg

Maybe I’ve just gotten too old or too sensitive or I’ve been on the road too long but I can’t think about the 53 doomed Vick dogs who will be put to sleep, if they haven’t already been at the time of this post, without eye-leaking. How lonely for them!

I completely understand that there is no way to fully rehabilitate those dogs who have been so brutalized that they can never trust another human. I understand why they must be moved prematurely to the Rainbow Bridge. Rationally, there is no question.

Vick Divides the Races — Let’s Go for Justice, Not Vengeance
Joy

You’re probably as tired of Michael Vick as I am but there’s an issue here I just have to bark about — race! I am amazed at how many people believe that this is a racial issue.

Somewhere along the line Michael Vick has managed to wrap himself in the hallowed cause of real heroes such as Dr. Martin Luther King. Somehow Vick and his supporters have been able to sell otherwise good and honest people on the idea that he is being prosecuted because he is something other than Caucasian. Dog poo!
