Chapel in Vermont for Dog-Lovers
By JOHN CURRAN Associated Press Writer
Article Launched: 02/19/2008
ST. JOHNSBURY, Vt.—Degas had his ballerinas, Monet his water lilies. For Stephen Huneck, inspiration comes on four legs—its teeth dug into a stick, or tugging on a piece of rope, or playing on a beach.
The eclectic Vermont folk artist, who started out whittling wooden sculptures of dogs and now specializes in dog-themed furniture, woodcut paintings and children’s books, has carved out a unique niche with his whimsical reproductions of Labrador retrievers and other dogs.

Is PetSmart too big to do a good job with live animals of any kind? That’s the question that comes to my mind when I read the following stories.
One PetSmart let a dog there to be groomed get loose and then get out of the store and killed. Now it comes out that PetSmart employees are performing rabbit neutering without appropriate veterinary procedures and they have scads of dead birds.
Now I have nothing against PetSmart personally. I buy dog clothes and some treats there. I’ve had good experiences with having my furbabies groomed at PetSmart. But as I read these reports from the site PetSmartkills and Born Free USA/Animal Protection Institute I really have to wonder about PetSmart’s ability to handle animals. Maybe they need to take a long, hard look at their procedures or even having live animals and services in the stores that can’t manage to hire capable staff.
Judge for yourself as you read through the following information.
Thanks to Brenda for barking in this site, PetSmartKills.com. This site was established because of a tragic incident in which a dog got loose from a PetSmart groomer and then none of the employees seem to have cared. The dog subsequently got out of the store and was killed by a car. Horrible!

Pet-mad Hong Kong fertile ground for pooch pampering services
HONG KONG (AFP) — The latest bakery to open in one of Hong Kong’s prime residential areas, Happy Valley, is perfectly positioned to catch passing trade.
The gleaming counter displays mouth-watering pastries, cookies and cakes as the smell of food lovingly prepared by resident chef David wafts from the giant ovens into the street.
But the target customers of this particular bakery, even the biggest, cannot always see the goodies on the shelves — although their barking indicates they can definitely smell them.

No More Playing Dead: Dog vending machines a downtown tipping point
Saturday, November 24, 2007
The red vending machine on the Browder Street plaza between Jackson and Commerce in downtown Dallas seems odd when you first come across it. The contraption contains doggie delicacies, which makes you wonder: Do dogs really need their own vending machines these days?

We have discussed dog rental here before. While there are apparent problems for dogs with being rented out, I can understand people who rent them.
Years ago I lived in California in areas where I couldn’t afford to have a dog (San Francisco, Monterey and LA). While I had a lot of good friends and still think these are lovely areas with many good experiences and people, I was often miserable. Why? Because I had lived with dogs most of my life and didn’t realize how much they meant to me until I couldn’t live with them. I might very well have rented a dog too.
So when it came time to decide where I wanted to live, I chose an area where it is relatively easy to have dogs. I’m lucky in that I have that choice. But what about people who live in extremely expensive areas and can’t arrange to have dogs in their homes? Maybe they feel this is the best they can do for the time.
