There’s a new dog carrier on the market, Pup To Go, which allows you to carry your dog with you. Seeing as our dogs all weigh over 60 lbs. I don’t foresee myself carrying them around anytime soon, but if you have a small pup it’s worth checking out.

Judging from the reactions of people walking on the sidewalks of Manhattan, the new Pup To Go carrier for small dogs is destined to be a huge hit. It is unique because it is a harness-style carrier allowing you to carry your small dog right in front of you, five feet off the ground.

People walking by are clearly intrigued and many stop to be introduced to Luke, an 8-year-old Shih Tzu and the inspiration for Pup To Go. His four little legs sticking out front and his tail hanging north to south is an attention getting visual, even for New Yorkers who’ve seen it all.

“Luke likes to be with me as I run all over the city. He loves shopping, going to Union Square and SoHo and joining me for a quick Pinkberry run,” says Meena Mansharamani, proud Mom of Luke and Co-Founder of Pup To Go. “He does not like being confined in a bag-style carrier. Instead, Pup To Go allows him to be part of the action. And people can’t resist him now that he’s at eye level. I’m guessing his head rub action has increased at least a thousand-fold.”

The creator of the Pup To Go said the carrier isn’t to prevent your dog from getting exercise, Luke still gets scheduled walks, but to allow your pup to go places they otherwise couldn’t. The company is generously offering up a few carriers for two lucky Dogsters to win. If you would like to win one-your dog must be no more than 25 lbs.- leave your answer to “If you and your small dog could go anywhere, where would you go with your Pup To Go?” in the comment section.

The contest will run for two weeks, each week one lucky Dogster will be chosen to win a Pup To Go. You have from today through Tuesday, November 24th to enter. The first winner will be chosen on Tuesday, November 17th and the second on Tuesday, November 24th.

Good luck!

I always like making contests fun, this one is no exception. To enter you need to choose one of the prizes and share a story about your pup. An example, “Bo went Wonky Bonkers when he caught a squirrel in the backyard. After he spit it out he could have used some DogToids.”

Leave your comment in the comment section under the post, the contest runs today through Tuesday, September 29th when I will randomly choose one lucky winner.

Yesterday I received a heartbreaking letter from Bobbie, she had given her pup Nikko a Windee chewie and the dog choked to death. I am not familiar with these treats but we had a scary experience with Copper years ago when she was chewing a rawhide.

I was away on business and Lisa had given her one of the chewies with the knots on the end. Copper had eaten them before with no issues, the girl can chew. This time she almost choked to death when one of the knots separated and got stuck in her throat. Lisa thought she was going to watch her die, it was horrible. Eventually she was able to grab hold of a piece and pull it from her throat, we were very lucky, she never would have made it to the emergency vet.

We have never bought those types of chewies again. I have heard horror stories about many different types of rawhides/chewies, and while some pups have no issues it is always good to be aware of what can happen. Here’s Bobbie’s story…

On Saturday night, (8/16/09) my 6 year old Shih Tzu, Nikko, was eating a dog chewie named Windee (a/k/a Moo tubes & Beef Trachea). He began choking and I tried but could not get the Windee chew from him. I thought the choking stopped before I went to bed but the next day I woke up and Nikko was dead. The necropsy performed that morning revealed approximately 2 inches of the chew lodged in the trachea leading to death by asphyxiation.

The 6″ Windee chew is manufactured by Jones Natural Chews Company (the label says Jones Gourmet Chews Company) located in Rockford Illinois. The chew is advertised as \”good chewing for all size dogs\”. There are absolutely no warnings that choking can occur and cause death OR the Windee can lodge in the trachea and thus cause death by asphyxiation.

I contacted Jones Natural Chews company and spoke to Dean Jones, one of the owners. I told him what happened and he said he would send me a letter advising as to what would be done. When I didn’t receive the letter I called him back and he said the letter was sent. I still have not received any letter. I requested they take this product off the market so that it would not happen to another dog. He said they would NOT take the Windee chew off the market. I then requested a warning label on the product that choking can occur and lead to death. He said he spoke to their Attorneys and they may put some type of warning that \”Choking could be hazardous\” That is not sufficient. It minimizes the reality, death can occur.

I know our dogs love bones and chewies and we all love to see our dogs happy BUT the consequences are not worth it.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE IF YOU HAVE A DOG DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES GIVE Windee (a/k/a Moo tubes & Beef Trachea) TO YOUR DOG.

I can’t tell you how much I loved Nikko, I bred him and thus had him since the day he was born. IF you have had a dog die because of choking on this or any other product please notify me via email.

We are so sorry to hear about the loss of Nikko and extend our heartfelt condolences. I want to thank Bobbie for sharing her experience so others can be spared the pain she is going through.

In Salina, KS breed specific legislation (BSL) was passed in 2005 which bans owning unregistered pit bulls and mixed breeds that are predominantly pit bull. If a pit bull is found it can be removed from the owner and either put down or possibly re-homed outside Salina.

Pit bull is a term commonly used to describe several breeds of dog, many breed-specific laws use the term “pit bull” to refer to the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier, and dogs with significant mixes of these breeds.

Recently a dog named Lucey was almost put down due to mistaken identity. It all began when Angie Cartwright was pet-sitting for her brother and his dog got loose. Animal control officers picked up the dog and when he was returned saw Lucey.

The officers thought she looked like a pit bull and told Cartwright they were taking her in for testing, a DNA test. I found it interesting that they offered that option, as you’ll see in a minute it can be a lifesaving test.

Here are the details from KansasCity.com.

Today, Lucey is home, and Cartwright credits a genetic test kit that helps pet owners identify the heritage of their mixed-breed dogs.

The test found that a minor amount of Lucey’s DNA came from Staffordshire bull terrier genes — a little more than 12 percent, not close to a predominant percentage.

Without the test results, Cartwright and her family would have been faced with finding Lucey a home outside Salina, or leaving her at the animal shelter where she would be destroyed.

I am personally against BSL because I don’t think it solves the real issue, bad owners and bad breeders. This case is just one more reason it scares me, Lucey was taken away on the assumption she had bit bull in her. If it weren’t for the the DNA test wh0 knows what would have happened. I am impressed the time was taken to find out what breed(s) she really was. I have no idea if all places that have BSL test like this, but they should. I also wonder if the test cost is charged to the owner, it isn’t an inexpensive test, usually about $140.

Interesting enough, the test showed the largest amount (25%) of Lucey’s DNA was Bernese mountain dog. She had no more than 12.5 percent each of bull terrier DNA, boxer, and Staffordshire bull terrier.

You can’t judge a dog by its cover.

Below she shares how you can customize any dog collar to make it special, give it some BLING! Her dog Ghost is the model for the blinged out collar, she’s stylin’, that’s for sure. Sara and her family reside in Croswell, Michigan.

Are you a dog lover? Are you in love with your dog? If so, there is probably nothing you wouldn’t do for your furry friend, right?

Anyone that has ever had a dog and loved him (her) so much you’d do anything for her knows that not only do you love your dog, but you love to show her off. Right?

As a dog lover, myself, I totally relate to the love, showing off aspect, of being a dog owner and a dog lover. Recently, I watched a dog show on television. I watched as the handlers, not the owners, caressed and flat out showed their love for their amazing animals. I couldn’t believe how much love was expressed between each and every handler and the amazing canine. The handler would command; the dog would obey. And yet, something seemed to be missing. After awhile of complete thought and pondering, I think I figured it out.

Every champion dog in that ring, although totally more than an ordinary species, lacked something in appeal. Sure, to know the dog was a champion in its own right because it stood at perfect attention in the center ring really was not enough. Something was missing. Bling!! That’s what was missing. Dog Bling!!

Every dog is a champion in its own right whether standing center stage or standing in your own backyard.

Think about it. Here you are in your own backyard with your champion pooch. You decide to take her for a walk through town. What do you need? You need her collar/license and leash. Hmmm!! Yes, of course. But she is also a champion in your heart and you want to show her off. So what do you do? You put on her Dog Bling hand made by YOU!

Yes! Dog Bling! Made by you!

There’s nothing else that makes her feel more proud to strut the streets with you, and there’s nothing else that makes you more proud to strut right along side her. I have been in the jewelry business for 20+ years, and currently write articles about buying jewelry. One day I got the idea to write about blinging out my dog. Hmmm!! Rubies and Diamonds, yes!!!

Let Me Show You How, It’s Easy.

We will take an inexpensive nylon collar and 3mm crystals and make a dog collar fit for a princess. If you have a prince you can bling him out using black colored crystals or any color of your choice.

You will need crystals, glue, a nylon collar, tweezers and a ruler. Size your new collar to your dog first. Lay out the collar and space the lines of crystals about 1/8″ so the collar can flex. If they are too close together the glue will not flex and the crystals will fall off. Keep about a 1/2″ distance on each side of the adjustment buckle so you can make adjustments later. Measure and calculate the amount of crystals you will need to buy. I used about 288 for my dog, a Weimaraner.

After everything is laid out start by picking up the crystals and applying a small amount of glue to the bottom and place it on the collar. Make sure you are doing the correct side. It will be a little tricky at first but you will get the hang of it.

The best crystals to use are Swarovski; I purchased mine from Bling It Yourself. I also used gel style crazy glue which out performed all the others. The down side is you will have to wipe the crystals with acetone or fingernail polish remover when they are dry to remove the white haze (not a big deal). If you are using the plastic style crystals use the glue they recommend. Let the collar dry overnight before putting it on your dog.

Custom Bling for your dog. Makes her feel and look like a star. Makes her feel like a true champion. Makes YOU proud!

I’m not the most crafty person, I’ve never even sewed on a button, so chances are I won’t be making custom collars anytime soon. It is a cute idea for those that are creative and like to try new things. If anyone makes one give me a bark.
