Snout-To-Mouth, Would You?
Lisa Hoefinger

The Associated Press and Petside took a poll, they found out most dog owners are willing to go snouth-to-mouth but aren’t really prepared for an emergency.cprx-inset-community

Here are some of the poll results from the AP, go to their site to read more.

* 63% of dog owners and 53% of cat owners would be at least somewhat likely to perform CPR on their pet.

* 65% of women vs. 50% of men say they’d be more likely to perform CPR.

* 54% don’t have a fire evacuation plan.

*41% have had at least one incident requiring an emergency trip to the vet.

* 30% of dog owners and 22% of cat owners at least sometimes give them bones from table scraps.

* 20% have a pet first aid kit at home.

* 16% have pets who’ve had allergic reactions.

* 7% have pets that have eaten something poisonous.

What about you, would you perform snout-to-mouth?  Give me a bark.

  1. Sasha & Mom Kim

I would do it in a second…It wouldn’t even have to be my pet!!

I would have liked the percentages to be higher!!

  2. kat

Of course. I have been trained in “First Aid, CPR, and defibulation.” I will lend aid to anyone or anything. That is what I have been trained to do.I am a member of a community. I that take my positition very seriously. Business or otherwise.

  3. Kirby

I’ld probably be more likely to blow into a pup mouth and a hoomans.

  4. Birdy

    Without hesitation.

  5. George

    In a heartbeat.. ;)

  6. courtney

i would do for any animal if neccessary! i eat food from my dog if he dont eat it so why not do mouth to mouth! i would defiently do it in a heartbeat! i love my dogs too much to watch them suffer

  7. Daphne

OF COURSE!!! you shouldn’t have a pet if you wouldn’t be willing to help her in an emergency. I know I wouldn’t be able to just stand around and watch her suffer I would have to help.

  8. maria

I would’nt even have to think about it I would absolutely do it for my furkids ,they are family too.

  9. Nero and Homer

In a heartbeat! I am going to sign up for the Pet CPR/First Aid class.

  10. Pogo

Three words – in a heartbeat. (Oh, I just saw Nero and Homer beat me to those three words, bol!) But yes, I wouldn’t hesitate if my little sweetheart was in need. Whatever it took.

  11. Daisy

Well, I would have no problem performing CPR on any animal but when I took a CPR class for humans the instructor told me to just call 911 and wait for paramedics because I was so bad at doing CPR. LOL!! I never did get my certificate.

  12. Alexandria

    You bet I would !

  13. Milo

I’m certified in Pet CPR and have a pet first aid kit. I have to keep my boys safe!

  14. Sybil Marie

Dogs are more likely to need the Heimlich maneuver.

  15. Diqui

I wouldn’t even hesitate on my own animals or any other creature that needed the help. You’re less likely to catch an infection from an animal than from a human (no, not because their mouths are “cleaner” but because the microbes that inhabit dog or cat mouths typically don’t infect us).

  16. Sancho Panza

I like the way you people think! My mom agrees with all of you and would not hesitate to go mouth to snout for any critter in need. She needs some training though. She did do the Himelich thingy on me once.

  17. Merit's Mom

A number of years ago, my neighbor had her miniture dashound attached to a line on her porch. The porch steps were open. Her other dog tangled and pulled the dog and it went through the opening and was hanging. I heard her scream and came running. Her dog was not breathing. I attempted mouth to snout and did some cpr but I believe the dog was strangled and most likely broke its neck. I would do it in a heart beat again.

  18. Gracie

In a heartbeat… I kiss my pups in the mouth all the time anyway. Heck, it wouldn’t even have to be one my pets. I don’t understand people who are to afraid of germs to be willing to do CPR on their pets… I’m a bit concerned about how low those numbers are.

  19. molly and Lily

Our mom wouldn’t think twice about giving us mouth to snout. We are family! She would do anything it took if we were in an emergnecy. And we have a fire evacuation plan and everything.

  20. Cody's crew

I wouldn’t even have to think about it. Any animal in need would get my immediate response!

  21. JacknBluemom

Absolutely! I love my dogs and would do it without a second thougth. I have learned pet cpr from tv but would love an on hands class…anyone know of one in Orange County, California??

  22. Daddy

I would for any non-aggressive (there’d be no point if a truly aggressive creature woke up and bit my face since there would be no way to help him/her after that) pet regardless of species, it’s a bit gross but I’d rather have dog snot on my mouth than not try to save one of my furry or feathered family members.

  23. ANNA

I WOULD PERFORM CPR MY DOG AND MY CATS IN A MINUTE. THEY RELY ON US FOR SO MUCH AND FEEL THAT EVER PET OWNER AS WELL AS NON PET OWNERS SHOULD BE TRAINED.

  24. Luvmy2dogs

I would not hesitate for a split second! My dogs are my four legged kids and I would do anything for them. They bring so much joy into my life, there is nothing I wouldnt do for either one of them

  25. Jax's Mom

Of course I would… the trick is to be prepared. Depending on the size of your dog, find a plastic drink bottle (20 oz water bottles work for my Malamute) and cut off the bottom. Tape the sharp edges with duct tape. Keep a couple of these around the house and in the car. Place the bottle over the dog’s mouth & nose and blow in the top! It focuses the air into the snout, AND keeps you sanitary. If the bottle is too big, create a better “seal” by adding more layers of duct tape.

  26. Kathy

Absolutely – I just need to learn how, but I think I could figure it out.

  27. Deb

    In a New York minute!

  28. Chanel's Mommy

I’m also concerned with the LOW percentage of people that would save their pups life. Why have a pet if you don’t care enough to keep it safe, sound, and healthy?

  29. Teresa

Of course, I would! I wouldn’t think twice about giving my own dogs CPR as well as others if need be.

  30. Cecilia

Absolutely!! No hesitation not all! And not just for my own dogs!!

  31. Samsmom

I performed chest compressions and gave mouth to snout to my 10 year old boxer when he had a heart attack—saved his life (along with the help of some extraordinary vets after we got him to the hospital)! The following year when it happend again, we weren’t so lucky, but I’m grateful for that extra time we had.

  32. Tonya- Clara, Lilo & Heidi's Mom

I would have no problem doing that for any of the girls which includes the cats (we have three cats too.) When Clara was hit by a truck – thankfully her injuries were minor- we rushed her to the emergency hospital. Had she stopped breathing I wouldn’t have thought twice. There are things a lot more gross and germy than a dog’s mouth, and when life is in the balance gross and germy don’t matter too much anymore. All I could think of was getting her the care she needed.

  33. Melanie

Kathy – you can learn how to do pet CPR here: http://www.youtube.com/user/MelanieLMonteiro
(It’s my video!) As a pet first aid instructor and author of The Safe Dog Handbook, I assure all pet owners that the chance of getting an illness from performing mouth-to-snout rescue breathing is practically impossible. I’ve also just been informed by the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society that the standards for performing CPR on pets has NOT changed, as it has for humans (for humans it is now recommended that the rescuer do chest compressions only and no mouth-to-mouth). Dogs and cats have different arrest rhythms than humans – so the breathing is a crucial part of performing CPR on pets. For those interested in learning more about pet safety, feel free to check out my website.

  34. Brynne

ABSOLUTLEY! Hey, I go mouth to snout every day! Don’t you?

  35. Lou

    Absolutely!!! They are family.

  36. Carrie

Absolutely 100%. They are my kids and we share kisses all the time. If it would save them, I wouldn’t hesitate.

  37. Molly

    In a heartbeat.

  38. Frank

Of course! They are our babies. We would do it without hesitation.

  39. tami

Definitely…on my animals or anybody else’s. My ex-husband and I used to have salt-water aquariums. He once performed mouth to mouth on one of our bestest fish buddies. Unfortunately we lost our long-time friend but it touched my heart to see my ex try so hard to save him. All life is precious. Save it if you can!

  40. Michaelle

I would do snout to mouth without hestitation for my fur babies and probably for anyone’s!

  41. Beverly

I have done CPR – twice – once with success and once, sadly, without success.

  42. Kristi

I would do anything short of dying for my babies!! There wouldn’t be a question as to whether I would do mouth-to-snout….I would walk through fire for them.

  43. Vicki Bryan

I would difinitly give my dog mouth to muzzel. I have! I had a boxer puppy and I was in the house and heard a awful cry I ran out to see the puppy lied out First I gave him the himlick and after he throw up he quit breathing I started the mouth to muzzel he came to I put him in the car and had to pull over twice on the way to the vets and get him mouth to muzzell again. When we got to the vet they kept him. Come to fine out he had been bitten by a black widow. After all was done he came home and lived a long healthy life. I am very glad I did the mouth to muzzel and would not hassate to do it again

  44. Jen

Of course. My dogs are my babies.

  45. D.Lehr

    OF COURSE I WOULD!

  46. Flor

Of course I would, without even thinking it.

Not only for my pets, but for any other creature in distress.

  47. Gina

    I absolutely would,
    I love my dogs.
the only thing is,I don’t know how,but I would certainly try to do everything I could.

  48. GABRIELLE

YES WITHOUT ANY HESITATION AND IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE MY PET ANY DOG THAT NEEDS HIS OR HER LIFE SAVED AND I TOO WOULD HAVE WANTED THE PERCENTAGE TO BE HIGHER

  49. Joyce

    Absolutely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

  50. Roger

You bet! As someone else said, “They are family!”

  51. Cathy, Casey, Osa, Rio and zuni

Without ANY hesitation!! Our 3 dogs are our “kids”- I just wish they’d live LONGER. Enjoy every moment with them!!

  52. Sara

To Kathy – Red Cross has pet first aid courses that will teach you CPR using the mannequin shown in the picture, plus other things like how to stop bleeding. I was able to save my Greyhound’s life when he was badly injured at home and I couldn’t get him to a vet (it happened on 9/11) thanks to that class. Otherwise, he would have bled to death. Take the course, make up a first aid kit, and feel more prepared for an emergency.

  53. Rob Holmes

Hell yes I would. I went and took Animal First Aid as sponsored by the Red Cross for exactly that reason.

My babies are my family, and are treated as such.

  54. Marcia

Where can I take a refresher course on CPR for animals?

  55. Ruth Ann

Our Yorkie suffered a head injury. She was unconsious and not breathing. My husband and I performed CPR until we could get her to the vet. The CPR, along with an angel of a vet, saved her life. You just do it without thinking.

  56. Debbie

In a heart beat, not only for my “kids” but for others as well. I am trained in CPR and during my recertification I asked if it was much different and if the Red Cross will be including mouth to snout in their next class.

    Still waiting for an answer

  57. Larry

of course I would I’ve been an EMT for thirty years. Dogs, cats, any mammal really. Fish, I fear, are on their own…

  58. Jacquie Wood

You bet a bark I’d do a snout-to-mouth for my dogs. They are my kids. LOL LOL

  59. Tammy

Would not even hesitate for a moment! Anything for my baby.

  60. leah

i would do ANYTHING for my dog…ANYTHING!

  61. leah

TAMI FOR FISH THE BEST WAY TO BRING THEM BACK IS TO BLOW BUBBLES INTO THE TANK WITH A STRAW IT HAS WORKED FOR ME 2 TIMES AND BOTH TIMES THE FISH LIVED YEARS AFTERWARD.

  62. Melissa

Yes…without a second thought. I would do whatever I had to to save my dogs!!!

  63. Paula

Absolutely. I would not hesitate to do whatever I could do to help my dogs, or any dog in need of assistance. I would like to be more skilled in first aid techniques so I could be sure to act quickly and correctly in an emergency situation.

  64. Sarah

In a heart beat! I would do anything for my dog because I know he would do the same for me!

  65. alex

Anyone who WOULDN’T should give their pet away NOW!!!

  66. Ed

    I will and I did….

  67. Julie

I would for dog or cat or just about any animal and I have.

  68. Rod

A dozen years ago, I was at the vet’s with my dog. There was a commotion. A golden retriever was birthing and there were some problems. I helped do M to M on a few pups. We only lost two out of nine. A few months later I received a great color post card of thanks, with the whole “family” lined up and looking GOOOOD.

  69. Dan

I’m a volunteer firefighter and EMT in my community. In our town, we operate dozens of ambulances. On them we carry special equipment to help dogs and cats breath from oxygen in the event they are trapped in a smoke condition. During the past year, my fire department rescued a cat from the cellar of a burning building and successfully used this equipment to save its life. Ask your ambulance squad if they carry this equipment–if they don’t–encourage them to do so because it works! For more information go to http://www.halesitefd.org

  70. Dee

I wouldn’t even stop to think!!!

  71. lepercan

As almost all others have said … in an instant…. no hesitation…without a doubt!!!

  72. Genie

Of course I would do CPR for my dog…probably for my rabbits too, or at least the one who doesn’t bite!

In fact, even as a former EMT, I can say I’d rather do CPR on my dog than some people.

  73. sandeep attawar

In the blink of an eye! without a shred of doubt!!!

  74. Sarah

For sure I would, if I knew how. Is there a difference in method used for animal CPR? Is it different for cats vs. dogs? What do you put in a dog/cat first aid kit?

  75. Brenda

I had to give my teacup poodle, Fifi, snout-to-mouth about a year ago!

  76. Teri

Are you kidding? Of Course! Whatever it took to save my pet, heck she drinks out of my water glass, I know, kinda gross, whatever! I love her.

  77. Maureen

ABSOLUTELY! i would do anything to save my boys!

  78. Brenda

I am an Instructor in Pet CPR And First Aid, and I teach on this subject. I would defiantely do this on my own pets and I encourge all pet owners to learn.

  79. Brenda

If anyone is interested in learning or would like information on Pet CPR And First Aid please look us up on our website. Thanks Brenda

  80. Brenda

Beg n Bark.com is where information is about Pet CPR And First Aid

  81. willie's mom

I not only would, I have. Many years ago my Mom’s dog had a litter of puppies and moved them to the cool spot under the patio to escape the West Texas sun. A sudden torrential rain storm came through and the momma dog was running wild and barking and trying to get our attention when my Mother realized it was about the puppies…my brother and I ran out and fished the puppies out with a garden hoe and I blew “snout to snout” into their mouths and noses. Each one would start to sputter and breathe and we would go to the next. We were able to save five of the six—the last one to come out was too far gone. Neither of us thought a thing about it—it was the natural thing to do.

  82. Samantha

It really goes without saying. It’s a bit shocking to see the percentage isn’t something more like 99%.

Sure if you think about where your dog’s mouth has been, it seems gross. But my dog is like my child, so you’ve just got to do what you’ve got to do.

Who are those people who would let their pet die because they’ve seen their dog lick it’s privates? Poor shame.

  83. Barry

Of course. By the way, my sister has a certification in this type of thing, and carries in her car an empty 2 liter soda bottle that has been cut in half. She has the half with the spout and says she was taught to put the big open end over a dogs snout and face creating a seal, then blow in through the bottle top end. Makes since especially if it’s a large bread dog with a big mouth, though I guess you could hold the mouth shut and blow through the nose.

  84. Prin-cess

I’d do it in a heartbeat.

A few years back, my lovebird smashed into the wall when she got spooked, and was unconscious, I had to do it, plus I kept rubbing on her chest, and blowing into her nose. I didn’t know if I was doing it right, and it did take several minutes before she came around and she lived 8 more years too, died of old age at 15.

  85. Peanut

Mom did this for me when I had a spell, collapsed, and stopped breathing. That was almost three years ago when I was one year old. I had brain damage from being slammed to the ground once too often before I was rescued. Mom was my foster mom, but she and I found we loved each other so she adopted me. Mom would do CPR for any pet in need– especially my three brothers and nine cousins. Every true pet owner should learn how to do this procedure.

  86. Eric

I wouldn’t hesitate for a second to give my dogs CPR. Eventually I would like to enroll in a first aid class for pets so that I am properly trained to administer CPR and first aid.

  87. Rufus Puppy

Absolutely, In a heartbeat. And my mom would do it for me in a heartbeat also. Mommy and I watched Melanie’s video a couple of times together.

  88. Bonnie Carpenter

Absoutely, no questions asked. I have raised this dog from a puppy, he would die for me and I would certainly do all I could to save his life.

  89. Trisha

As a paramedic, I teach both Pet CPR and People CPR – and have had to perform both on animals and people — and let me tell you, I would rather do mouth to snout any day!

  90. Janet K

Without hesitation. Maybe sooner than I would for my husband.

  91. Dianne

I am a vet tech and now have my own Sanctuary and I have done CPR on more dogs then I can count. I would not even think about it if one of my own needed it.

  92. J and the furface gang

Yes any dog and no bones no bones given to any animal.

  93. kippster

I would do it without thinking about it.

  94. Angela

Of course, I would not think twice. I would do anything to save one of my Kids!!!

  95. Akihiko

of course i will! they’re part of my life

  96. Ashes, Ashes

I know the mechanics of it, but are pugs different because their snouts are practically non-existent?

  97. JJ Kerr

    JJ & Pico de Gallo
Do you really need to ask? Pico is cleaner than some humans….It is our duty!!!!!

  98. Mike

I would do it, if I could.

  99. Angel

I just need to learn how…

But yeah, of course I would! Angel is my baby.

  100. Georgia's Mom

Been there, done that. The real question is would THEY be willing to give us snout to mouth to save us… Maybe they’d think it was gross. (BOL)

  101. enid jackson

IF A PET OWNER HAVE TO THINK ABOUT DOING CPR ON THERE PETS THEN THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE ONE AS FOR ME I WOULD GIVE MY LITTLE PEBBLE,S MY ALL TO SAVE HER LIFE

  102. Pam

My husband has had to do CPR 2 x for family animals. The first time our twin girls were 3 and my mother (for some unknown reason) bought the girls ducks for Easter. They had them in the little pool and one of the girls accidently drowned one of the ducks. My husband couldnt handle how heart broken my daughter was when shew brought the duck to him and did CPR on it. Lived to be realeased at local duck pond. The 2nd time we were dog sitting one of our chihauhaus puppies that we had gave to a friend, the puppy had got under our electric recliner when it went down and we didnt realize it. Thank goodness CPR worked on that puppy too! Dont know how I could have explained that to our friends!

  103. proby

yes I would give snout to mouth to both of my dogs and any other four legged animal if means that that particular animal lived. as I am a vegetarian.

  104. frankie

absolutely!!! i love my pets, they are like our children, wouldn’t even have to think twice, and my hubby said he would too!!! :)

  105. Connie

Yes, I have done it on my dog. I think it depends on the kind of illness your dog have. My dog had had genetic cardio. First time when she collapsed, she was at the time still able to enjoy life the way she wanted with little limits under my supervision. I did it then and she continues to enjoy quite a few months more. When the illness progressed, she was having disabilties the last few days before she collapsed, I just let her go peacefully. At least, she was enjoying her stroll in the park and I knew even if I resucitated her, there was nothing the vet could have offered. It could not have worked out any better for the both of us.

  106. Lizbeth

    Absolutely! In a second!

Connie, I read your post and it touched my heart. It sounds like you had an amazing bond with your beloved pet. I am sorry for your loss.

  107. Hollistizzle

My dog just died yesterday and my boyfriend DID give it nose to mouth, but unfortunately she still didn’t make it! I miss her. And, yes, of course I would, but be sure to use the nose of the doggins!

  108. Darlene

I would do it for my dog before I did it for any person that’s gor sure!

  109. Maria

I want to thank Melanie for that wonderful site teaching CPR for dogs. I did not know how to perform cpr on a dog and was worried if anything happened to my little one I would not have known what to do. Now I do! Thanks again Melanie and yes I would perform cpr on a dog especially now that I know how.

  110. leewoon

definitely! my pets r my life

  111. Jane

    Yes,
I definitely would do mouth to snout. It has worked at our house already with good success. I also teach CPR to the community and I have been thinking about entering a comment about pet CPR in my presentation.
    JB

  112. LunaXSage

I would do Snout to Mouth in a second. Doesn’t matter who’s animal, or what kind of animal. I once had to do it on a bird (guess thats beak to mouth?) unfortunately the bird was too sick to live )=

  113. Spit

I have done it on my own and a friends, would not think twice not to do it.

Everyone should take a first aid class at least if owning a dog just for those everyday boboo’s.

  114. Kristen

    Absolutely!
I performed the Heimlich Maneuver once on my GSD when she choked on rawhide. Never gave it to her again. (Did it on both my kids too, in restaurants.)

  115. Dee Hess

Not only WOULD I, I have done mouth to snout on my 17 year old dog.
He came home post anesthesia a bit too early in my mind after having an MRI. He stopped breathing an seized. It didn’t take me more than ONE SECOND, to cover his beautiful little nose and mouth with mine.

He stopped seizing and if it wasn’t for another (not the same vet, to misdiagnose his orgininal problem), we’d have him here, barking and having a wonderful time with the “Trick or Treaters”
Sure, I’m a nurse, but gotta tell you this–as many times as I have done mouth to mouth on humans BEFORE the Heart Assn. changed all the protocols, doing CPR or in our case, mouth to snouth, was FAR LESS CREEPY! At least I knew a dog, while they may have their faces in other dogs’ behinds, the one thing I’D KNOW (whether it’s my dog or not) NO DOG WILL BE TRANSMITTING, the HIV Virus as a result of shooting up with illegal drugs.
At least I don’t know of any dogs on CRACK!
