In July, the feds wrapped up an 18-month investigation by arresting those behind a dog-fighting ring that spanned eight states and involved more than 500 dogs.

Now the Riverfont Times reports that after veterinary examinations and spay/neuter surgeries, the rescued pups are slowly being put up for adoption. See some photos of the survivors below and click here for the RFT’s full slideshow.

More than 20 of the dogs rescued were pregnant and have gone on to deliver more than 100 puppies like Sophie (left) and her brother, Brutus.

Carlos really loves looking at himself in the mirror. He will then proceed to “play” with the other dog.

Fay, an incredibly and almost surprisingly sweet dog was probably the saddest story of the day. She’s an American Pit Bull Terrier, approximately 5 years old. She has terrible physical damage to her face that is not unheard of with dogs associated with dog fighting. She is missing both her upper and lower lips and a small part of her nose.

Meet Junior. He’s an eleven-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier who was handed over to Broken Hearts, Mended Souls Rescue.

  1. Natcho & carly..

I can’t believe dogs are put through this…Makes me SICK!

  2. Nero and Homer

Each one of them was saved and will hopefully find their forever loving, patient homes. I cry for the ones that perished for the sadistic pleasure and greed of “humans”. There is a war against terrorism and drugs. There needs to be a war against cruelty towards animals and in particular dogfighting!

  3. Syl

Oh my goodness, when I see the things that humans do to animals, it makes me so sick and so sad. I don’t think these people should even be called human. They are the animals. God bless these precious animals and bring them wonderful forever homes.

  4. Daisy

My heart is broken and my stomach is sick. So, so sad.

  5. Burt's Mom, Rhon

Remind me again why dog fighters like Michael “Sick” deserve a second chance????????

  6. Gracie

God Bless these precious pups. I pray that each and every one finds a wonderful forever home. It makes me sick that people can be so incredibly cruel.

I remember a time when fighting dogs were not often rescued, and national news would not publish accounts about them. I’m glad for the changes that Michael Vick brought about, and because of Dogster and other media outlets, these rescued dogs should all eventually find homes. Yes, we should be saddened and horrified, but then we should be grateful that our country’s mainstream media watches and publishes. They are creating change, and it’s good change.

Next: adopt pit bull type dogs from your local shelter. They are euthanized more than any other type of dog because so many people will not adopt them. It is prejudice, plain and simple. They are dogs just like all others, and all dogs have some varying genetic predisposition for aggression.

My husband and I have a pit bull mix fur child. You can find him on Dogster: search Duffer from Genoa WI.

I stopped when I saw the picture of the dog with no lips, the tears were blurring my vision. I’m so glad they’ve been given a second chance and rescue groups are willing to rehabilitate them. Possibly the silver lining to the Vick case, before those dogs the thought of rehabilitating fighting dogs, even amongst animal “rights” groups was unheard of. Bless all of these rescuers and the survivors of such horrible human acts.

  9. Abby

That is so sad, it is just terrible what humans can do to animals, it is sickening!

  10. Abbie and hemi

so sad this is the reason i dont get along with people …i was taught that we are here on this earth to take care of it and its beautiful creatures without them there is no us, my dad taught me that until he died,,,,people who do that should live it like the poor animals had to,,, also those stupid little cages people leave there animals in for hours on end dont deserve to have them ….they wouldnt put ther kids through that, lets let stupid pet owners sit in one for hours and see how they feel….omg people have some compassion for these beautiful creatures….people are so disapointing…..Karma Karma Karma……

  11. josephine

this makes me so sad – over and over again.
I just don’t understand which part of the brain is missing in these people’s heads. They must be completely brain dead.
    jerks

  12. Abbie and hemi

josephine who the hell are you talking about, you on vicks side sure sounds like it…..maybe your brain dead, people have thrown away lots of animals in our yard for me to feed and take care of stupid city people dump em and go get another animal so they can dump em again . some people are so stupid they dont deserve the love of a pet….jerk

  13. josephine

? I am sorry if I mislead you with my spontaneous post. The braindead-ers are the jerks who mess with the dogs.. It hurts hearing about how people hurt them over and over and over again.
Sorry for causing you distress, sonja

  14. Elizaeth Riley

For those people who think Vick should get a second chance they are brain dead. He is only doing what he can now to make himself look good. You can’t change how you feel about animals and he doesn’t have any feelings for them. Anyone who would let animals be treated like that doesn’t have a brain or a heart.

  15. Gail

I think Michael Vick should get the same treatment he gave the dogs. I adopted a “pit bull bait” dog in July.

  16. proby

dogs that are put through this is disgusting and makes my hart feels very sad for them and it also makes me sick and very angry.

  17. Marlene Patterson

I get so upset when I hear about dogs being abused. I think the abusers should be severely punished!

  18. Jhoi

Those people should be punished and teach them a lesson… I am very sad when i see those animals treated in this way…. All the best for those survivors

  19. Bonnie

We rescued a pit bull cattle dog mix and from an animal shelter and she is the best dog we have ever had…Loving and sweet and greets you with her whole back end wiggling…she even smiles at you…Smart..loving and just a sweet dog…
I cannot believe what people do to animals…it just breaks my heart ….
