… i don’t believe how this so called shelter can kill, well, murder all of these innocent babbies!!!! its crazy & its WRONG!!! i wish i could help someway, but i am not in any position to take on another dog… this is just not a good time right now for me… i’m going to see what i can do though to help somehow. there has got to be a way to save these poor little babies. god bless them all. and i’m sorry… but this “shelter” is a cruel place & it shouldn’t even b open… how can those people sleep at night knowing they r going to murder innocent puppies. well, god forgive them, because i can’t & i won’t. i’ve gotta see what i can do…talk to u all later. please try & help… luv to u all, droopy & her mom.

  2. Ry

I used to live in Roma and it’s so sad, the only give dogs int heir shelter a week to live. I rescued multiple dogs when I lived there. Peopl just dump their dogs off on the side of the road all the time, it’s a sick pathetic place and I hated living there.

  3. droopy & mommie

thats so sad… i’m sorry to say it sounds like a very horrible place to live… especially for an animal. doesn’t seem much like people care at all bout animals there. and it sure doesn’t help having a shelter like the one they do. they mights as well not even have a shelter. the dogs would probally have a better chance at surviving on there own than they do there. very sad… i sure won’t b sleeping tonight.

  4. Carissa & Kolbe

droopy & mommie, you help no one by condemning shelters.

Shelters who euthanize do so because there IS NO ROOM and there IS NO FUNDING and irresponsible people continue to DUMP DOGS. Instead of talking about how horrible these shelter workers are why don’t you do something about it? Donate any spare cash you have, donate your time by volunteering at your local shelter, donate food and collars and supplies so their measly amount of funding can be spent on vet care…. I can’t believe this mentality of “the evil shelter murdering poor innocent babies” continues…. take a look at the real criminals here, the people allowing their dogs breed out of control, dumping litters off at shelters, people dumping their pets when they no longer match the furniture, pee on the floor, shed too much and any other number of ridiculous reasons.

Shelters are left with pretty much NO funding and are expected to magically be able to clean up the mess of thousands of irresponsible people — apparently money falls from the sky for shelters, or so it seems people believe. It doesn’t. Welcome to reality… Now BE the change you wish to see.

  5. Liberty and Cujo

    Carissa & Kolbe,
I can’t believe you’re making such an attack on people who actually care, and are disgusted that such little chances are given to these poor animals. Have a HEART! And I agree with droopy and mommie, they’d be better off roaming the streets than at shelters like that. It’s kind of hard as there are so many of these kill shelters all over the country. Who is to say your money would actually go there anyway? The best thing for someone to do that actually lives in the area would be to take dogs from the killshelters to no-kill shelters. One week to live is pretty BLEAK even for a “shelter” with no funding.

Why doesn’t animal control find a no-kill shelter to take these dogs to anyway? Also, I don’t know about you all, but I rescued a dog and a cat in the past two months. There is only so much people can do, so much money to be spread around. I know I’d never be able to afford donating my money to a kill shelter for one because I am a full time student, and taxes and bills keep being raised but not wages. The real problem here isn’t the people it is the government.

  6. Upset

It’s part the government and part the people that live their and part the shelter. I have been watching the Ga shelters for months now, and it’s sickening that hundreds of dogs just within the last couple of months have been put down.

I blame the shelters because some of them only have their adoption time open for two hours a day and no weekends!! Give me a break, people work, how are they suppose to see a dog during work hours. They are closed on Sunday when most people would be able to go to a shelter.

They do nothing to support neutering & spaying. If they really want to help cut the population, they should offer it at a big discount, considering most of these dogs are in the poorest of areas. They should educate the people, even if it means volunteering their own time to do so. Or find locals with half a brain and ask them to help out, which they don’t do.

They don’t uphold enough fund-raisers, and barely try to get these funds from other areas, since their own people can’t afford to.

I blame them, for not Educating the public on the care and responsibility of having a pet.

A lot of these dogs and puppies are from backyard breeders and hoarders. Again, their government and shelters don’t do enough to stop them with stricter laws and inspecting their facilities.

It doesn’t take a lot of money to have a town hall meeting and ask for help and educate the people, and try to change the GA laws. Personally, considering their high kill rate, this is one area where it should be mandatory to have your dog licensed and neutered and spayed, and a limit on how many dogs one person can own.

As far as letting these dogs and puppies be on their own… I use to think the same way, until I saw several of them who were starved, infested with fleas and mange, severe ear infections, skin and bones, and soak and wet and freezing. That type of life is worse then death for a dog.
Dogs are not wolves, they have been bred to be man’s companion and a lot of them, especially the small dogs, have no clue how to survive the elements. How are they not suppose to get an infestation of fleas and ticks and ear mites? Only man can help them in a lot of ways that they can’t help themselves.

I blame their local government, because it’s just as uncaring and cold and ignorant as the people who live their.

So, unless some one who lives their and knows how to change the GA laws, it will never change. It’s been going on for years.

Just so you know, several of those shelters are only giving the dogs 5 days now, and the dogs lose if it falls on a weekend and a monday holiday!

  7. Lumina and her mommy

I adopted Lumina from this shelter. Driving up there from Alabama, I saw more stray dogs than I could count in that little, dirt poor town. It was heartbreaking. Lumina only lived because the lady running the shelter held her for me at her own home. Lu was a feral puppy, who was picked up in the woods after her mother was found dead in the road. If you can help one of these dogs, please step forward. They are in a terrible place with almost no chance to live.

  8. Kelli

Somebody needs to contact Best Friends Animal Sanctuary and let them know the situation, maybe they can use their Pup My Ride program to transport some of these babies to new shelters or homes somewhere with a lower euthansia rate.

  9. Very irritated

Upset, do not go there with the animal limit laws-they are not the way to go-personally I have multiple pets and all are very well taken care of, and I do this all by myself.

Everyone just needs to stop bickering and actually go do something to help. If you don’t live in Georgia, then help somehow-ask your local no-kill or rescue groups if they can take in the slack from Georgia; contact Best Friends to get their Pup My Ride program to come get some and disburse some of the dogs to a non-populated area, where they are in need of dogs. There are other solutions, but everyone is just bickering about it. Other states need to help Georgia, if that is what it takes. Yes, Georgia sucks for euthanizing dogs and cats by the hundreds, its the southern mentality and people do not learn, not matter how much you try to educate them, some just don’t listen. I know rescues here in this state that have tried, I belong to one of them. Its very frustrating. But if you live in a state where dogs are more scarce, then by GOD, help out another state. What do you think Networking or petworking is for??? I have cross posted this story to everyone I can think of, do the same and stop the bitching

  10. Horst Hoefinger

Someone just left a message that this is a rumor, it has been deleted because this info is all true. I just spoke to animal control and she told me the dogs stay 3-5 days and if not adopted are put down.

The shelter is closed every Wed. for euthanasia.

  11. Upset

“Very Irritated”, I have done all of that and more!!!! Everyone is entitled to their opinion, so, no need to point a finger at one person who is just as upset at the system as you are!!

All the states are overloaded, including mine, but the difference is that their are many shelters who knock themselves out with every possible resource to relocate their dogs and cats, and are not as quick to pd so many, so fast, as does the GA shelters. That’s a fact and not just an opinion. A lot of the other states are in such a bad way, that they have reduced their time to 5 days instead of the standard 7 days, too. If you know of any that have the room, then by all means YOU call them too!

As far as limiting the amount of dogs per family, yes, it is radical, and not all areas need that rule. But their are some TOWNS in some States where the citizens just don’t care about their dogs because of their own ignorance and that’s where it should be enforced. I am glad to hear you are not one of them. If you lived in a Town that the other citizens just kept dropping off dogs by the hundreds wouldn’t you want to make that sacrifice knowing it will save hundreds of other dogs instead of just the couple of extras dogs that you know you would take care of? Think about it, you get to keep 4 dogs instead of 6 dogs, verses hundreds that are put down.

Since you made some valid suggestions, why don’t you just do it yourself?

KELLI, why should “SomeBody” else do it,? Why don’t you just do it?

I already did those suggestions and more, so before you or any body else Flames, make sure you live by your own suggestions!!!!!

The more people call on these other rescues and shelters the better the chance for the dogs. So even though I did it, don’t let the buck stop their.

I am very much aware of a few rescue groups who try endlessly to rescue as many as they can from these shelters. Believe me, I can’t commend them enough!

But like I said. the real problem lies with GA, you won’t change my mind on that!
