Dogs Of Couple Who Die In Crash Need Home
Dogster member Sasha just gave me a bark about a couple in Schaumburg, IL. who were killed in a motorcycle accident leaving their four dogs homeless.
Mike Kelm and his wife Sue went out for a motorcycle ride on Labor Day to enjoy the beautiful weather. And to get out of the house because it was few days before Sue had cancer surgery. Tragically they were both killed when struck by a car. The couple had no children but they do have four dependents, their precious dogs.
While the family grieves over the loss of their loved ones they are trying to honor the couple by finding a new home for all four pups. Here are the details from the Daily Herald.
“They had no children of their own,” the Kelms’ niece Kim Mayer of Joliet said. “These were their children. And as much as people could spoil animals, they did.”
The dogs are Anacortes, 6, a female lab mix; Cedonia, 3, a female husky mix; Tacoma, 7, a male lab mix; and Everett, 4, a male Australian shepherd-lab mix.
“They are their own pack,” Mayer said. “They really take good care of each other.”
Until a permanent home is found the dogs are being taken care of at the Chicago Canine Club in Burr Ridge. Anyone interested in adopting the Kelms’ dogs should arrange an appointment by contacting Kathy Deets at the Chicago Canine Club at (708) 542-8969 or via email. Or Mayer at (815) 272-4583 or via email.
Our condolences to the Kelm family. We hope the pups find a home where they can stay together, I can’t think of a better tribute to Mike and Sue Kelm.

OMD – those faces! This story is ripping my heart out.
What a tragic story. We’ve just sent out a tweet (@ZoomRoom), and hope that as many Dogster members and dog lovers everywhere will tweet and retweet, post and repost, to use the power of social media to find these deserving dogs a truly loving home in what must be the most difficult time in their lives.

That is my greatest fear that if something happened to my husband and myself, who would take our dogs?! We have four precious “kids” too and I wonder whatever would become of them. I pray this little pack finds a good home either together or if necessary, separately.
Please give them someone to keep them together. What a beautiful family. God bless and help them all during the loss of their wonderful mom and pop. Dear Lord, we pray you keep them safely wrapped in your arms and shelter them from all life’s harms. They deserve to stay together as they seem to have been loved together. Those faces are so kind and hopeful looking.
That is so sad.It makes me think about when my husband and I are out riding our Harley.(we have made arrangments for someone to come take all 3 of our dogs if something ever happens to us.I wish them the best of luck on finding a home that thay can all be together.god bess them and watch over them.I am going to tell all my friends about the poor things!!
Thanks to all of you who have ReTweeted this post and sent it on to others. This story makes me very sad. I am a kitty, but I get sad, too.
This story just breaks my heart. My deepest condolences to the Kelm family. I pray that these beautiful dogs will find a home together…they have lost so much already…
That is so sad. I sure hope someone get’s the dog’s and keep’s them all together. They need each other.
O my dog, paws crossed that they all get home’d together. Mum and dad have already got a home for us if anything happens to them ~ in thier will we are to go with our nan and she’ll get paid for it as well.
Paws crossed that they get another home where they will be loved, wanted and spoilt as much as they was before.
What a tragic loss for the family and for those sweet doggies. Their little faces radiate the love they have received. I hope that someone can take them together so they don’t have to live through another traumatic separation.
My dog and three parrots are in my will with specific instructions about who is to care for them and there is a nice life insurance policy just for them. I probably (hopefully) will outlive Ziggy my JRT, but the parrots will outlive me by decades.
what a tragic story…
that is my biggest fear too… my husband and i have 5 dogs of our own…. mommy daddy and their litter of 3 boys…. so we have 5 in total…
if something were to happen to us we would never want them to be separated… they are all they have… they are their own pack!
i pray that these dogs get to stay together…. it would be so heart breaking to brake them apart… i hope someone with a good heart takes them all in and gives them a good loving home, in honor of their family…
That’s just terrible! This reminds me to update our wills and designate caregivers and instructions for rehoming our dogs in case something happens to us. I would hate for my family to have to try and figure out what I would have wanted to do. Hearts United for Animals has a Legacy of Love program that I’ve looked into before but never completed. Now is the time.
So sorry to hear things like this, Who ever gets the life insurance, house and other things should have the respect to take care of the animals. If their is no will, the state should take care of the dogs for the rest of their lives, since they will end up with he peoples money and home.
I told my son and daughter they could have everything(over a million)they had to take care of the animals(13). If they didn’t I would come back from the dead and every time they looked around they would see me.
ANIMALS DESERVE RESPECT AND RIGHTS ALSO.
This is really sad! I would adopt all four of them! I wish I could!
This is truly sad
and at their ages they were I’m sure very attached to their human parents!. I’m wishing all the best of luck in the world for them.
I sent the info onto Husky Haven in NJ, they are reputable at finding homes for larger dogs. I wish I could take them in.
Great idea Koda. I live a couple hours from Schaumburg so I have emailed the info to a local rescue who specialize with huskies but often take other large breeds in too.
I wish I could take them too, they all are so adorable and just look like good, happy dogs. So so sad.
Dear Mike and Sue,
I wish I could be the one to adapt your beautiful dogs. I pray that they stay together (they must!), just as the two of you. My heart breaks for your families and your 4 adorable kids pictured above. I cannot stop thinking of them. I am so glad your 4 babies are together.
I must believe that there is a reason why this happened – this tragedy that words will never convey. I also must believe that the pups are still at the shelter for a reason. I believe you are both in a better place and I am praying that just the right soul is coming to care for your babies until you are all reunited again.
I am so heartbroken that I cannot take them for you. I will continue to follow this story hoping, hoping, hoping, hoping. God Bless.
