Senator Ted Kennedy Remembered As Dog Lover
Regardless of what you thought of Sen. Ted Kennedy one thing can’t be disputed, he loved dogs. Throughout his long political career he worked on a variety of legislation to protect the welfare of animals.
(L.A. Times) Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States, wrote today that Kennedy was “a stalwart ally over the years on a wide range of legislation to protect companion animals, farm animals, animals in research and wildlife,” adding that the senator from Massachusetts was instrumental in the passage of animal welfare legislation including laws that cracked down on dogfighting and cockfighting, protected horses and other farm animals, and sent chimpanzees once used in medical research to sanctuaries.
The two pups closest to his heart were his own Portuguese water dogs, Sunny and Splash. His dogs were the impetus behind his book “My Senator and Me: A Dog’s Eye View of Washington, D.C.,” which introduces young kids to the political process. The book is told through Splash’s viewpoint, making it both a fun and informative read for children.
Even if Sen. Kennedy’s political viewpoint differed from your own, and you didn’t respect him as either a man or politician, he diligently fought for the rights of animals. For that, we should be grateful.

It’s OK that he murdered his pregnant girlfriend because he liked dogs???
Hitler liked dogs as well…
Kennedy was a rich, spoiled, self-centered Politician-
oh, a drunk, too.
I’m gad he tossed a few of his unearned pennies to some dogs- that is swell.
The comparison to Hitler is totally uncalled for.
As for the Chappaquiddick incident that was not a murder, it was a tragic accident. Granted had he handled the situation better there may have been a happier outcome, but it wasn’t murder.
Yes Ted Kennedy was rich, no doubt about that, but not spoiled. Apparently some people aren’t informed about the Kennedy family’s altruistic endeavors and their selfless dedication to public service.
Ted Kennedy spent his time in politics as a champion not only for animals rights but mostly for the rights of the underprivileged, the disenfranchised and the minorities who faced discrimination. Was he perfect, no, none of us are. But his failings, while great and small, don’t dilute the great service he performed on behalf of all of us.
People seem to forget that it was Joseph Kennedy who was the crook. His children worked hard dedicating their life to public service and making life better for Americans (not erradicating an entire race, like Hitler). Punishing the children for the sins of the father only makes you a thoughtless, ignorant, pathetic loser.
The comment comparing Kennedy to Hitler was obviously made by an idiot. He must of been under a rock all of his miserable life. Kennedy did more for this country than the other two combined. Check his record and his life before you engage your mouth. Also I would recommend a brain transplant.
By the way, although Kennedy was a drunk, he sobered up and as for YOU, your stupidity and ignorance is imbred and will remain with you all your life.
To bob and pita & Teddy
Way to go, great comments LOL.
Wow ddraig…speaking ill of the dead, what a class act you are. I think a lot of people (especially you) don’t even begin to realize the impact the Senator had on everyday life in this country, civil rights, voting rights, health care to name but a very few….do a little reasearch on the man and everything he accomplished in his life and for this country before you spew your hate I wonder how you would respond if you had to face up to the tragedies and adversities that befell Sen Kennedy. Based on your litle hate filled, fact empty diatribe I would guess not too well. Shame on you.
RIP Senator Kennedy….you will be missed.
Dogster isn’t the place to spit your hate Ddraig. Me & my husband hear a enough of that on t.v. We don’t need to hear it from you ! Besides this isn’t a political web site, this is a place for dogs & cats owners come to talk about their furbabies. This why I come to dogster is to get away from all bull crap like this!
God Bless You Senator Kennedy & Your Family!
And Thanks For Making Our Country Great !!!!!!!
Senator Kennedy will always be remembered – and missed – by his support of animal welfare bills.

Ddraig: Get A Life!
Hitler didn’t like dogs. If you knew anything at all about him, you would know that dogs were used for unmentionable experimentation and without anesthetics, and he proudly displayed his mutilations to show what he was going to do to the Jews to instill fear. Others dogs were only used as his guard dogs for himself and around the camps. He almost ruined the GS breed with his experimental breeding program.
Kennedy made a poor judgment on his actions, and true (in my opinion) should have been given some punishment, like anyone else. BUT he also spent the rest of his life in repentance by giving back to the people and animal rights for a lot of mistakes that he made. He sobered up, and always
admitted he was wrong, unlike many others in politics. This is why people regained their respect for him. He was a doer not a just a speaker. What have you done for mankind and the animal world?
Unlike you, Kennedy new the meaning of the word,
“forgiveness”
Remember,”he who is without sin, let him cast the first stone”
Thank you Senator Kennedy for the years of service you as a son of Liberty, worked for the United States of America.
We join with your family at this time of great Sorrow when you have lost your last battle to Cancer.
Our prayers, our thoughts are with your family, as they struggle to walk through this lonely tragic loss without you now.
We pray that you are with God now and all your family will have a multitude of memories to cherish you in their hearts, to ease pain, to release unsaid moments, to say words that need to be said, to let go of past things, that need to be let go of.
We honor A man who was one of America’s sons.
Although I did not like Ted Kennedy in earlier years, once I got older, I changed my mind. Here’s why.
Regardless of his mistakes, his marital problems, etc, he STILL took time out to be a father to his own children, a FATHER FIGURE to JFK’s 2 kids & to Bobby’s kids. There was a time when Ted’s son was going in for a leg amputation, & one of Bobby’s kids was getting married. Bobby’s daughter didn’t have her father to walk her down the aisle…so, guess who did it for him! Yeah, Ted. He was right there with his son when his son went into surgery, he went to the church & gave his niece away, & was back in time for his son to get out of surgery. HOW MANY OF YOU WOULD TAKE CARE OF YOUR SIBLINGS’ KIDS?
It took a great man to be able to juggle fatherhood with his kids & his nieces & nephews who so desperately needed father figures in their lives.
eight bells, teddy.
splash and sunny will miss you.
We are all grateful to Senator Kennedy for his many years of work to help the underprivileged and for us doggies. He gave unselfishly for years. God be with him and may he rest in peace. We just bet his fur angels have already greeted him at the bridge.
After being away for a week I came back to see if there were further comments on the most disrespectful comments of the first one on this blog. I thank the other 13 and bless you for knowing the truth. Although Kennedy had his problems (as we all do), he had the integrity and balls to change his habits and lifestyle as well as his unswerving desire to work with humanity and its flaws. Kennedy is a man of integrity and respect. He should be honored not chastised. He was very influentcial in our senate for over 40 years and watching his final days, and his letter to the POPE, I think he knew, and sought forgiveness for his humanity and will be remembered in history as one of the greatest and most human of them all! Long live the Heir to Camelot! God Bless Teddy, his work, his devotion and his heroism as a champion for the rights of the underpriileged. Anyone that says different truly needs to throw the first stone! Bob, Jake and family
