Dog Fighting Ring Bust Outside Philadelphia

Since the Eagles signed Michael Vick dog fighting has been the talk of the town in Philly. To add fuel to the fire, The Philadelphia Inquirer reports a dog fighting ring has been busted in Germantown which is just outside the city.
A tip from the animal-cruelty hotline sent officers from the Pennsylvania SPCA to a house in East Germantown. Several dead dogs were found and a few badly injured pit bulls were rescued. Four men, one is the property owner, face charges.
Today, the Eagles plan to hold a summit of area animal-welfare groups at the NovaCare Complex, the team’s South Philadelphia training facility. Vick is not expected to attend.
“This particular bust is especially timely,” said Gail Luciani, the chief public relations officer for the Pennsylvania SPCA.
George Bengal, director of law enforcement for the Pennsylvania SPCA, said the entire block where the bust took place is a mecca for dog fighting. Roughly 50-75 complaints come in each month, many off the hotline.
It’s great to hear there are people out there that care enough to call the hotline. To file reports of dog fighting and other animal cruelty, contact the Pennsylvania SPCA at 1-866-601-SPCA (7722) or via email.
The pup pictured above is one-month-old Petey, a pit bull mix, he was rescued by a Dogster member after his mother was shot and he (along with littermates) were left in a trash bag to die. He is up for adoption, watch for his full story on the blog tomorrow.

stupid people should be hung
Petey – our paws are crossed for you and your littermates!!
Our thanks to the people in the neighborhood who voiced their compaints, thus alerting the SPCA.
Ugh, right in Germantown??? I live in South Jersey, I can’t believe they get so many reports of dog fighting in the city.
We need tougher laws and tougher sentences.
No wonder they were so willing to take on Vick…he’ll fit right in! Disgusting…
What are these violent people thinking???
I think these guys need to be put in that ring and fight like what they have done to the dogs.
I definitely agree with you Daisy. Tougher laws and tougher sentences.
This people are evil, without humanity and compassion. They are not fit to live in society.
If people had never been this way to begin with the world would be a better place. I have never understood the “logic” or attraction of people to watching animals fight until the death. But I guess it fulfills the “uncivilized” side of us.
First of all Phyllis what do you mean it fulfills the uncivilized side of us are you making excuses for animal abusers? second of all I’m sick of all this crap! this weekend I was standing with my bull terrier in front of a store and 5 african american teenagers walked by looked at my dog and said “oooh that’s a fighting dog” I was mad I told them you don’t fight any dog! what is the problem? is it a cultural thing? certain cultures think that animal torture and abuse is ok even a cool thing to do? that’s disgusting! now Micheal Vick getting back in the spotlight making millions again tells all these people who look up to him that it is ok and you can be forgiven even famous! some people are just without morals and are sick individuals how watching dogs tear each other apart crying and screaming until one is dead or half dead then in that case the loser will be shot or hung or electrocuted is beyond understanding! some people should’nt be allowed to walk this earth! and who says we are better than animals just because we can walk and talk? and they don’t deserve the same rights? we are all God’s creatures!

AND they just wrote Vick will play on Thursday
Told you it was a SHAM!!! If “Sick” was serious about getting the word out against the culture of Dog Fighting, he’s be front and CENTER at any “animal welfare group summit”. Is he? Nope!
We need more educational programs for urban kids. Dog fighting passes through generations, but if we can stop it by teaching the kids, the parent may change, too. The Humane Society has a wonderful program, btw.

Each dog fight nets tens of thousands of dollars of cash, the distribution of illegal drugs, and weapons. I doubt the well publicized (which often means very phony) pep talks Vick is giving to the kids is going to do much good with sweeping unemployment and the lure of big money and power in dog fighting, now synonymous with the prestigious NFL via Michael Vick. Good job HSUS! You helped get Vick what he wanted-his NFL job, and America now cheers and defends a DOG FIGHTER. Or are you all now the official Michael Vick butt kisser’s club. Just curious, that’s all.
That’s just…evil! I have read Cesar’s Way by Cesar Millan andhe talked about a pit bull who, after losing a fight, got gasoline poured all over her-and then she got lit on fire. Dogfighting should be abolished. But then again, it is. In certain places. But who cares whether or not it’s abolished?
