Cow Chases Dog Owner Into Tree
Horst Hoefinger

OK, I readily admit this next story isn’t focused solely on our favorite companions, but at least they’re on the periphery of the tale.

The story’s focus is on a cow or a pensioner depending on your point of view. Personally cows scare me, pensioners not so much.

It turns out I’m not the only one who feels this way if only because of the sheer size of the animals. I suspect I’d climb a tree too if one came charging at me.

This is Nottingham has the full story.

FIREFIGHTERS are warning dog walkers to avoid fields with cows in after a pensioner had to be rescued from up a tree.

The 79-year-old woman had climbed up a hawthorn in Newark and been stuck for two hours after she and her two dogs were chased by a cow and a calf.

Brian Smith, watch manager for Newark Fire Station, said he only found the woman after spotting her pet Jack Russell hiding in the long grass beneath the tree, trembling.

Mr Smith said: “We normally save kids up trees but not 79-year-old ladies. I was expecting it to be a child. She said the cows had chased her.

“If you do come across cattle, let go of the dog and the cows will chase them. Dogs will outrun a cow, unless it has arthritis like the lady’s little dog did.”

The woman’s other dog, a golden retriever, is believed to have scared off the cows while hiding in a bush below the tree.

So which would your pup be more like: the trembling Jack Russell or the Golden Retriever?

I’d say maybe 1 of my three would have been the golden, and 2 of them maybe the JRT. My Am Staff girl would be the golden, and GS and BC males would be the the JRT. They are not really scared but kinda shy.

  2. Ddraig

    Sorry-
I am on the COW”S side- being a farm owner- I have seen the results of dog and cow/calf encounters…
a mauled, dead calf or injured cow is not what you want to find in your field…
fields belong to the animals kept in them.

Dog owners seem to find humor in their sweet little pups chasing and barking at livestock…
If the cow (with a CALF) felt threatened- then good for them chasing the dog(s) and owner.

(Ddraig actually did not write this- his Mom, Patti did…she is the one who has had to bury her beloved live stock…)

  3. Pogo

Pogo would be more of the “GET OUTTA MY FACE YOU BIG LUG, I AIN’T SCARE OF YOU!!!” type JRT/Chihuahua. No trembling for her, lol!

  4. Daisy

    I just can’t believe a 79 year old woman climbed a tree :-O I’m 35 and I’m not sure I could make it up a tree. lol

  5. max

You would if you had about 1,200 lbs of cow breathing down your neck. I have a cattle dog so he would know what to do such as turn her and calf away.

  6. Mollydog

Molly my Chesapeake Bay Retriever would probably stand her ground and try to stare the cow down. She can muster up quite a piercing stare, which she occasionally tries on me but I usually win the staring contest.

  7. Angi mom to Gretchen and Dori, gram-mom to Dottie

Our question is was the lady in the field or were the cow and calf out of the field? or just really close to a fence? Having had cattle and dogs and never having any trouble with either I has cause to wonder just how the encounter occurred. I would be far more afraid of the bull.

  8. RextheMiniAussie

I’m supposed to be a herding dog, so I hope I would be like the golden. I guess we’ll never know until me and mom are chased by a cow. I bet I would chase it away though. I do that with the mailman haha

  9. Anon

A cow could easily kill my dogs so I hope they would run as fast as possible. I always thought of cows as mellow and carefree, poor lady!
