Heat On For Firefighter
Horst Hoefinger

I just found an update on the firefighter who shot his dogs so he wouldn’t have to pay to board them.  Santuomo’s job is now on the line,  Chief Pettus Jr.  wants him fired.

Here’s the exclusive story from WBNS 10TV.

Pettus Jr. recommended Thursday that a firefighter who shot his two dogs to death before going on vacation be terminated.

In December, an anonymous tip brought officers from the Capital Area Humane Society to the Dumpster behind Fire Station 27 where they found two bloody bags containing the dogs’ bodies.

Santuomo, 43, allegedly bragged to fellow firefighters that he shot his dogs because he was leaving on vacation.

The Division of Fire office said that several complaints and concerns were received after Santuomo’s conviction.

Pettus’ recommendation will be reviewed next week by the Director of Public Safety, fire officials said.

Santuomo has been a firefighter since 1996, 10TV News reported.

Stay with 10TV News and refresh 10TV.com for continuing coverage.

Go to the WBNS site where they’re taking a poll to see what the public thinks about Santuomo losing or keeping his job. Cast your vote and let it be known that what he did is a disgrace to the fire department and he is not fit to serve the public.

Obviously the pressure from the public has had a huge effect on this case, the fact that his job is up for review proves it. Way to go dog lovers of America!

Good to see that the poll is 85% in favor of canning the s.o.b.

  2. Barbara, Tipper, Oreo and Lady

This man is one of worse excuses for a human being I have ever heard of. He should be tied up and shot himself. He should be banded from ever working as a firefighter or anyone who is to save lives not take lives.

  3. Mike (kosar)

I live in the city that this happened. Very tradgic story and when i heard about this i was shocked that he still had his job.
I was one of the many that sent a personal email to his Fire Cheif demanding his firing or telling him that he is just as guilty if he lets him stay on the force.
I am glad to see they are actually doing something about this!!

  4. Daisy

I voted NO he shouldn’t keep his job. I’m so relieved so many people voted the same way. He should be fired and I’m so glad the Chief is going to see to it. When I voted it said 85% of the people felt the same way.

  5. I-H-B-K

I just voted NO too and it’s still at 85% for him to lose his job. Let’s raise that percent even hire. Let’s make this sick SOB pay for what he did to these innocent dogs that I’m sure were loyal to him. What a disgrace to all the other firemen out there! Let’s get that percent up so high they can’t do anything but fire his sorry a**!

  6. Woof

He deserves not to only be fired but hung from the ceiling and shot like he did to those poor dogs.

  7. Cody's crew

I agree with what everyone has said so far. I voted that this arrogant, cruel, dangerous man lose his job and I firmly believe that he should be banned from ever holding a government job again! I was wondering if there was a way to find out who and how to email the people who will make this decision. I would love to see them bombarded with emails about dumping this guy in the trash like he did those precious dogs he killed!

  8. Reba

This guy is a disgusting human being!
He definitely should NOT be wearing any uniform representing the fire department!! He has already been reprimanded once because he is a rude & mean person. This act of despicable cruelty to his own dogs just proved it. 5 years is not enough! He should NEVER be allowed to own an animal ever again! Then after bragging about it…HE LIES! I hope the fire dept. kicks him out asap!! I would rather jump in hot coals before I would let this idiot rescue me!!! He does NOT stand for what a real “firefighter” should. They should have a good heart!

  9. Neal

I cannot imagine such blatant cruelty – the firefighters I know would put their own lives in harms way to “rescue a dog.” This individual doesn’t deserve to say he’s a firefighter. He should be fired, and forced to leave with his “tail tucked between his legs.” He should have a mandatory psych evaluation – people who hurt animals have a “glitch” in their brain somewhere. After the psych eval, he’ll need in depth counseling to figure out why he thought this was a viable solution to his problem.

He totally should lose his job as well as deal with the repercussions. I mean, pet sitting or boarding is not that expensive either. I own a pet sitting business and to be honest, I have a TON of fire fighters who use our service. They tend to do 24 hr shifts so I understand it is tough to have a dog when you want someone to watch it all the time.

  11. Flicka

Voted…. isnt it good to see the small voices carry heavy weight. Nothing more I can say about this creep is printable.

  12. Roberta A

I voted no and I think we should cross post this in every group in dogster. I can not believe someone could be so heartless. I know I wouldn’t want him anywhere near me, my kid, or my pets. How can someone like this be trusted to save a life when he can so heartlessly shoot someone that is suppose to be a part of his family. Not only do I think he should lose his job, I think a long jail term would be nice. Actually I would like to see worse happen but then that would make me like him.

  13. Ziggy Moonbeam & Mom

A NO vote here. This guy doesn’t deserve to be a part of anyone’s fire department. In case of a fire at my house, the only things I care about are myself and my little buddy Zig and his 3 birdie brothers. The rest is just stuff that can be replaced. They are my family – all of it, and mean the world to me. Would this man care enough to save their lives first? Probably not. I can’t imagine, well actually yes I can, what I’d say to this creep if I had the chance. This man needs psychotherapy before he’s turned loose in the community in any capacity. If he can do this to his dogs, how would he react in any real stressful situation?

  14. Blue

Uh, DUH he should SO lose his job! How can an obiviously sick and twisted person who can’t even take care of his poor dogs EVER be trusted with human lives? This man should be more than just fired, he should be arrested and put in jail for the rest of his life. And the fact that he bragged about it is just disgusting and wrong. Just. Plain. Wrong.
It’s people like him who are ruining our society. Aren’t we supposed to look up to firefighters and trust them? It just goes to show you that animals always bring out the true qualities of people, good or bad. (Or in this case disturbing)

Now if that were a human that would be premeditated murder. We really need to lobby stronger for animal abuse and cruelty laws.

Make it national, not state of local. He does not need to keep his job, people who are public servants expecially fire fighter are to save lives not end them. How many time have you turned on the new and a fire fighter was administrating oxygen to a dog/cat that they had just rescued from a burning house? Heck, I’ve even seen a few give Mouth to Mouth.

  16. Tucker

I do hope Santuomo loses his job, and I voted.

Any pup know of the good samaritan who reported the tradegy? He/She is our hero!!

  17. gaynor

Seriously would anyone out there trust this man to rescue their animals, their children or elderly relative? All of whom could be considered as equally inconvemient as pets! What a waste of oxygen this jerk is!

  18. My Little Demon's mum & family

There is a GOD! This man was FIRED! Read the article and see the video:http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2009/07/16/firefighter.html?sid=101
Watch the video of Dog Lovers about him on front page of newspaper:http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/index.html

    Thank you, Lord.
