I was just on their website looking at the dogs for adoption and what i don’t understand is the dogs only seem to get 3 or 4 days and then they are put down, one dog came in on June 28th and put down on July 2nd. That is just horrible. Why are they not allowing more time to get them adopted?
Dear Stacey, Governor Schwarzenegger of Ca. Is in the process of signing a bylaw to allow shelters to euthanize animals within 3 days of receiving them. Find out who your representatives are and write letters, have your friends write, make fliers-YELL- Ask your local humane society who you should contact. Just don’t not do anything. Thank you.
State law usually dictates the minimum number of days a shelter must hold a stray animal (aka “stray hold”). Many animals get only this time, there are too many coming in right behind them, and there is never enough room. Then there are the owner surrenders – in most shelters, owner surrenders can be taken directly back and euthanized. For them there is no mandatory hold period. There is a huge overpopulation of dogs and cats, we need more spay/neuter laws, better access to low cost spay/neuter, and more regulations on both puppy mills (should be outlawed IMO) and the “backyard breeders” who only breed to make a buck or to get a litter from their cute dog, with no regard for the consequences of what they are doing, or with bettering the breed.
I get about 200 emails per day from the local and regional rescue “lists” I belong to, and it is heartbreaking, frustrating, and overwhelming, and it is for those that work and volunteer at shelters too. Granted there are some bad ACO’s out there but most care greatly for the animals and can only do so much with the funding and laws they have.
BTW – Mahoning is or used to be a heartstick shelter – IMO that and the gas chamber should be outlawed as well. I encourage everyone that cares – get involved, wherever you are. The situation is worse every day – the economy has increased the euth rate tremendously in many shelters across the country.
Why does the pit bull dogs have URGENT next to them and not the labs?
