Firefighter Jailed After Death Of Dogs
Just when I think I’ve read every horrific thing possible another story comes to light. A firefighter in Ohio killed his dogs to avoid the cost of having to board them. No, I didn’t mistype.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A judge has given a 90-day jail sentence to an Ohio firefighter who prosecutors say killed his dogs to avoid boarding them during a vacation with a girlfriend.
Forty-three-year-old David Santuomo of Columbus pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of animal cruelty and one count of possession of a criminal tool. That charge concerned a plastic bottle that authorities said was used as a rifle silencer.
Assistant Franklin County Prosecutor Heather Robinson said Santuomo shot his two mixed-breed dogs Sloopy and Skeeter multiple times on Dec. 3 after tying them to a pipe in his basement. She says he dumped the remains in a trash bin behind his firehouse.
Defense attorney Sam Shamansky called the crime an isolated event “totally out of character” for his client.
Well, I’m glad this was an “isolated event” and he only killed two dogs. What kind of ridiculous defense is that? So only doing this once makes shooting your dogs alright? Do you get some kind of “get out of jail free” card for the first offense?
As appalled as I am at the sentence I’m even more disgusted he still has a job. This man is a firefighter, a public servant, he deserves to be fired from his job. Is this a man you would trust to save your life, or someone that should be working for the public?
Santuomo may not have wanted to pay to board his dogs but I would be more than happy to put out a few dollars to extend his boarding time at the local jail.

This is horrific. How sad for the dogs. This man needs to be fired from his job as a fireman. Perhaps letters to the Columbus fire chief could bring some pressure to do just that. Going to look for the Columbus fire departments website right now…..
At least he got some jail time! And, for doing what puppy millers do on a continuous basis to “unprofitable” dogs in their kennels. Amazing that he admitted it & pled guilty! Most of the time these people don’t serve any time! I agree the defense is ridiculous. And, that he should be fired. I don’t imagine he’d worry too much about rescuing someone’s pets from a fire, since he doesn’t value animals’ lives. Disgusting.
OMG!!! This guy is a real piece of sh-t. He needs to loose his job and never be allowed near animals again for the rest of his life. Oh he also needs to die a slow painful miserable death. How could this judge not give the guy a couple years at least. No wonder this country is the most gun happy place in the world.
You are right, Roxanne, it’s all baby steps towards a better world. But it makes me want to vomit, adopted dogs and then killed them. Practice run for humans. Another monster on the loose, in a hero’s disguise. Better check his freezer, backyard and basement. Advice to girlfriend: give him the slip and sleep with gun under pillow.
He should lose his job and life as far as I’m concerned. If he cannot afford the things he needs to have dogs, he should not had the dogs in the first place. And he should never be able to own another animal. It is clear he has no regards to life. If he gets another dog and desides to go on another vacation with a girlfriend he’ll probably kill it too. He is a disgust to mankind.
I want the name, emial address, and phone numbers of this judge. The judge should also be fired becuase he obviuosly has as little regerd for animals as the monster who committed the act. I say eye for an eye, shoot him several times, only then will the punishment fit the crime. This guy is seriously a firefighter, glad I live in GA. Where is PETA and SPCA?
First it starts with animals, then they move on to people. They are not only convicting an animal abuser. They are possibly stopping a future serial killer or child abuser.

90 days!? How about 90 years! I’m sick to my stomach about this. Yes definitely he should be fired and a new punishment be instituted. Neighbors should be notified that an animal abuser / killer is in their neighborhood, just as they would be if a rapist or child molester lived among them. He should never hold a public service job, or any job for that matter, again.
I am speechless thats completely unforgivable, especially for such a ridicules reason. The community is also insane letting him keep his job. They should be protesting and if they aren’t then they’ll probably pay for it later in deaths for having such a scum bag working for their community.
Every day I am just appalled at the stories about animal abuse. And, whoa, he got a whole 90 days behind bars. The judge & his attorney are scum too! I can’t believe he is keeping his job. I feel sorry for any fire he may go to where an animal is still in the house because, Dear Citizens of Columbus, this guy is not gonna help you out!

I just sent a message to the Mayor of Columbus. This is just disgusting. I hope he has a good time in jail and he is put in open population. Once the inmates find out what he has done, it will be rough for him, to say the least. Inmates do not treat other inmates kindly who harm ‘women, children and animals’. This is just too sick.

This isn’t the first time we have seen firefighters in the news for animal abuse, and it makes us sick, and our dad is the fire chief in our town.

Every day that I remain alive , I hear more stories as sickening as what this is. These poor dogs… I’m just speechless. I’m crying as I type this out. I just don’t understand what this world is coming to. He adopted these dogs and they trusted him with their life and welfare. People like this make me so upset. And he is a firefighter to boot. What a piece of garbage he is to do this… So this is what our society is coming to. Wherever you are, in soul, Sloopy and Skeeter, I’m so sorry you had to die like this. May your souls be at rest but I’m so sorry this person you trusted with your welfare and life hurt you in this way. I’m outraged.

Folks, I just sent a “Polite” letter to his boss. Yes, this is the perfect place to rant over something this horrific, but his BOSS, doesn’t read it! Only at the top can changes be made, and ONLY with cool heads. This man is “sick” but sadly when he finally moves onto human victims, if caught, we the taxpayers will pay for his room and board for the entire time of his stay with the state! IF someone steps in NOW, and either FIRES him, or DEMANDS he get counseling AT HIS EXPENSE to keep his job, will anything be resolved. Look at it this way, he MURDERED those babies, but at least NOW he can’t torture them.
The laws probably limited the judge in his sentencing decision. The solution seems to be that people need to work harder to change the laws and raise awareness in their states and communities. This man is sick. He doesn’t need a job helping the public, he needs to feel some hurt (like in his pocketbook if the court can’t put in jail for a good long time), get some counseling and then maybe get a job doing something that doesn’t involve living things. I wonder if the girlfriend ditched him?

Is this really all an animals life is worth?! If he had done this to a person, he would be getting multiple charges against him, so why not the same for a dog? He killed those dogs, for no reason other than he is cheap and didn’t want to take the time to find homes for his dogs, or find someone to care for them while he was gone. What a jerk! I hope that he is banned from ever owning another animal, because every time he goes on vacation, that animal will die. He is a very cruel and heartless person. Poor dogs. I can’t understand how anybody can look into their pet’s eyes and hurt them, let alone kill them. I only pray that one day our pets will be seen as living creatures with souls in the eyes of the courts and not possessions. 90 days and he still gets to keep his job? For murder? Things need to change.

He should lose his job, face jail time. pay a fine that goes to support a local animal rescue, and them be required to volunteer and a shelter for 6 months or more. This should be considered a class C felony.

These type of stories just never seem to end. Like Carla, I would not want this guy coming to my house either with my animals inside. Aren’t firefighters supposed to save life? Although I’m in Ontario, Canada, I would have no problem sending an email to his boss. This guy is a sicko and should spend more time in jail and pick up garbage for a living!

Why did he ask someone from the fire dept to come and check on his Dog for him . I ‘m sure he knew someone would come to his house to make sure his Dogs were ok . People like this don’t need pets . He should be fired I would not trust him to save me much less my 5 fur kids.But they let woman killers off for killing their children.Where is justice not just for humans but for animals too.He was just to stingy to pay for boarding.Most vets do not charge that much to board them.I think ours charges $5 a day.That is not very much.Rest in peace pups and meet doggies at the bridge.

The only thing that “talks” in this country is money. The people in the area covered by that fire department should refuse to donate anything to their funds or participate in any fundraising activity they are associated with – and make sure the town knows why – until he is fired.

To begin with, the firefighter should lose his job, his girlfriend, his pension and his freedom let alone his life in my opinion only. Also that sorry as excuse for a judge with his laughable 90 day sentence should be disbarred and not ever allowed to sit behind a trial again. He himself should be cencured and lose his job as well and made to work with abused animals for the next 10 years. I don’t know how he got away with 90 days when animal cruelty is a federal crime these days. I’d be looking into that if I lived in Columbus and I’d be making phone calls to every politician and prosecutor I could to inform them how angry I was that this guy who murdered a pet (and yes it takes a nutcase to do that) got off with a slap on the wrist while some small potatoes drug dealer is serving 3 to 5.
Very sad story. Seems this person has no concern for dogs. It is odd he actually adopted them. Others mistreat dogs much worse than this guy. Dogs do not have the same rights as human citizens. Loosing his job has no appropriate link to the crime he committed. The jail sentence does seem a just punishment (pluse of course court costs and animal remains disposal costs pluse fines). Some counseling seems in order. I would be concerned for this firefighter’s since of right and wrong. Most firefighters I know or have had contact with are true “heroes”. This guy is not. Perhaps he can be relagated to washing the vehicles and cleaning the firehouse. Since he has displayed his sense of selfishness, I doubt, if he is tested in an emergency, he will appropriately put himself in harms way to save another.
I believe in the right to own a gun for protection or legal hunting, but this idiot wasn’t protecting himself or his dogs. He should have gotten a lot more time in jail and a big fine. And I certainly hope his girlfriend had the sense to leave him high and dry and fast! I have always admired fireman who were willing to save pets from fires as well as humans. But I sure wouldn’t want this idiot, or anyone like him at my fire. He probably would have let them die just to see how long it would take.

As I read this article it makes my stomach churn. I am horrified that he only got 90 days in jail, for such an act. He should definitely be fired from his position, as there is obviously something psychologically wrong with this man. The part that kills me the most he did not want to pay to board them??? Give them back to the shelter then! Also he apparently had enough money to go on vacation, but not enough to pay for boarding??? This story just makes me want to vomit and to find out that he is only going to get 90 days in jail is just the icing on the cake. I hope some of the firefighters he works with are dog lovers, and give him his just deserts, or even better the chiefs are dog lovers and fire him and make sure he can never work for the county again.
Sickening! And, 90 days is far too short for shooting a dog; honestly, what have our justice system come to? Oh well, as Roxanne said, at least he got put in jail for some time. After reading this, I feel ill. What kind of sick person would do something like that? And what a HORRID excuse! I’m sorry but you do NOT take a living being’s life because you cant afford them. Didn’t he have friends (perhaps his fellow fire fighters) or family to take care of them? This man can ROT in jail for all I care. Until we as human beings stop thinking animals are possesions instead of gifts from God , nothing is going to change in this world, towards , animals, or to each other, every being deserves respect and dignity.
First off, what are the laws pertaining to the posession of and firing of a weapon? Every state has weapon laws, yes, weapons, not only guns, but knives, etc. Second, does he have to have a permit just to own one? Let alone firing one if it is within city limits, what then? There may be more to this. Time will tell.
This is the most horrible thing I’ve ever had to read. I looked at my little puppy and my 8 year old Rottie and it made me sick. I could NEVER in my life think of someone wanting to to that to their dogs. What would his children think when they find out that their dad murdered their pets because he was too cheap to board them while they were on vacation having a good time. This guy needs to not only lose his job but spend a lot more time in jail than 90 days.
Bugger should be given 90 YEARS, not merely days, then taken out, tied to a pope, and shot to death himself. I will NEVER understand why humans would/could do such a thing. OK, they do it to other humans, but at least other humans can fight back, not little furry things!
Words cannot describe how we felt when our mom told us this story. We are mourning for our two friends who were murdered and sick that he wasn’t punished severely by humans. What would happen if there was a fire and he had to tend to one of us?? I doubt he would try to revive us due to his sick mind that dogs are just property to be disposed of at will. We pray for our brothers and are so grateful that our mom loves us so much.

When I heard this story on our local news while eating- I thought I would choke on my food. This man is evil and disgusting and the punishment is NO where near what it should be for what he did to those 2 dogs.It saddens me that I live in Ohio and that our state laws are soooo inadequate when it comes to Companion animals and their safety! It’s time to start pressing the issue with our legislators and get these laws changed and made stronger to protect animals! And this man should NOT be working a job as a First Responder to people’s homes with such little regard for life that he has shown!

This guy took on the responsibilities of a dog and when it came time to pay for boarding so he could be cared for, he shot his dogs!!! Seriously…who does that?!?!?!
I agree way to short a sentence but then again abusers usually only get there wrists slapped anyway. But makes you wonder how much you would trust someone who thinks so little of life. Sorry his dogs were an inconvience but he could have turned them over to a rescue or something besides shooting them

So . . . does this mean when he is “rescuing” people from their homes and has to rescue their dog(s), cat(s), etc. from their burning home. will he just say, “Don’t need to rescue their a dog(s); I’ll just shoot them right here and now.” How pathetic. Isolated event? Hah! Surely, he must have done this before but no one has known it before. Shows his callusness. No need to show up at my burning house! DISCUSTING! JUST DISCUSTING!
People should be thankful it wasn’t a child. Dog’s unfortunately are shot, maimed and abused everyday and it is tragic.
I’m just thankful it wasn’t a person. As for his job. Not enough people are fireman and I bet you’d be glad if he was the one running into the flames bringing out your newborn from a fire.
Unfortunately dogs are considered “property” in the law hence probably the small sentence. But rest assured, I’m sure there are dog lovers in jail and they’ll do things to him that will make him think next time he tries something like this…and he won’t be able to sit down while he thinks about it if you know what I mean.

There really needs to be some major laws or policies and procedures made to obtain a pup or any animal….just anyone can have one or get one…and we need to have stronger laws about the rights of these animals when we so call educated humans adopt one……..there should a contract that humans have to sign…and guidelines that are to be up held or fines / and or jail sentences given…no trials needed…….if we humans get a ticket for not wearing our seat belt…let’s see?? what should we get for killing or abusing an innocent animal? hmmm…maybe the same punishment that the animal was given?

he is a cruel & heartless man!…he shot his dogs jst becoz he couldn’t pay?!?…what kind of a pathetic excuse is that?!…how would he like it if he was shot multiple times?!…dogs have feelings somehow too!…they have a life!…and it should be valued equally!…he should be sent to jail for d rest of his miserable life!!!you should be ashamed!!!

Firstly, I am a Firefighter and a dog owner. I am just as appauled as most of the people who have posted here, perhaps maybe even more because of the fact he is or was a firefighter. We strive evrey day to do our best to live up to the reputation of being the good guys, and for the most part I truely believe we are. I can say without a doubt he would not have lasted long in my house with the guys I work with. Secondly please don’t allow the fact that he was a part of the fire service to affect your thinking of the rest of us. We are the good guys, day or night, big or small problem you call we come, thats what we do. I for one have been doing it for alomst 30 years and love it just as much today as the first day I stepped on a firetruck.
So this guy’s reason is that he can’t afford to board the dogs since he’s been through bankruptcy and foreclosure, but he can afford to go on a cruise? That’s just horrible. I wish the prosecutors had pointed out the obvious.
I own a dog boarding kennel. I just heard about this incident from a customer. It is all I have been able to think about since yesterday. Dogs give us unconditional love and devotion and ask so little in return. How could anyone subject their dogs to this cruel and vile treatment?
This is a horrific story, but it reminded me that perfectly healthy lovable, worhwhile pets are being killed every day in shelters across the country.
We get mixed messages all the time about the value of animal lives.
I love my dogs, and this mans actions make me shudder, but in a broader context its just business as usual. The judges reaction would seem to back this up.
We need to go on vacation; can we please just shoot this guy so I don’t have to deal with taking the time to sign the petition?
