Dog Stops Traffic To Save Mother

Since this is a dog blog, a couple of times a month our boy Bo (woof!) thought it would be nice to get the news through a dog’s eyes. Bo invites everyone to read a chapter from his upcoming book BAD TO THE BONE at Bo Knows Online. It’s a funny memoir about the crazy adventures we have shared together over the last 14 plus years, told through Bo’s eyes.
Okay Bo, take it from here…..
Sometimes I see a heartwarming story and I just find the need to share it with the world.
A lot of you probably think that all New York City dogs are obnoxious, self absorbed and bark funny. To that all I can say is stop getting all your news from Cat Fancy magazine. NYC pups are no different than the ones in Kansas, Alabama or Hawaii. Although I’ll admit the ones in Hawaii are a bit happier than most.
To find the source of sunshine beaming into my life today, look no further than Husky, the son of a yellow lab-mix named Chile, and his heroic efforts to save his mother this morning.
The examiner.com has all the details.
The early Thursday morning rush hour on the Major Deegan Expressway in the Bronx was the setting of a dramatic and heartwarming scene as a German shepherd-mix protected its fallen mother who was struck by a car.
Around 6:30 a.m., May 14, a nine year old female yellow lab-mix, Chile, ran onto the Major Deegan Expressway and was hit by a car at exit 3. Her son Husky, ran to the rescue on the crowded highway. The dog ran around her body, protecting his injured mother by barking at traffic and police officers, even as they attempted to offer assistance.
When police managed to rescue Chile, Husky ran home through traffic, dodging vehicles as police tried to catch it.
Chile suffered a broken left leg. She had no ID at the time of the accident, but her owner saw the drama on TV, went to the vet center, and took her to an animal hospital where she will undergo surgery.
The owner told animal control that the other dog, who he also owns, is home now.
If I ever had a pup of my own, I would hope he/she would act as heroically as Husky. If not, at least I’d have somedog to fetch my Pupperoni’s for me.
Here’s a video report. Woof!

My first though t is not a responsible pet parent. It could of been much worse. And how did the fur kids get loose to get into traffic. Not a good idea to let you fur kids run loose in traffice during rush hour. Pet parent needs to ticketed and warned not to let it happen again.
I agree with Barbara – why were these dogs loose to begin with?? Awesome that Husky protected his mom, but this should have never happened. Be responsible pet owners!
Keep in mind that sometimes bad things happen. Recently there was a dog struck by a car here, and unfortnately wasn’t so lucky. My dad tried to help the dog but he didn’t make it. The owner found out that my dad had stayed with this dog in his last moments and wanted to thank him for his kindness. It was really an series of bad events that had happened that ended up with the dog on the street – the gate on their backyard had broken and the dog was in the yard without a collar as he had just been bathed.
I agree, people should be responsible and keep their pets in their yards, but don’t be too quick to judge!
Don’t judge..it could be you next. Dogs can open gates, scoot through doors, dig under fences, climb fences, jump over fences, jump out of cars, etc. If you were really a dog owner, you would already know that!
And yet again, my conviction that the hearts of dogs put us humans to shame is borne out. What a beautiful story. I’m so glad they’re both ok now and home safe.
What great story. That’s one courageous pup. Both human and canine parents should be proud of him!
And Cathy, you are right. Dogs are escape artists.
I can attest to dogs being escape artists. Anyone else out there have Beagles? I have one little brat that I can’t keep in the yard to save my life. The fact that the 80 – 120 mph winds we had last week took out part of my privacy fence doesn’t help. I managed to jerry rig it until I can get someone over to replace it but, she is still getting out. Now her puppies are learning from her.AAGGHH!! They drive me nuts sometimes! Fortunately she is street smart as I saved her from the streets, still, I would much prefer it if she stayed in the yard! I live in the country and she tends to stay out of the road.
When I saw this wonderful dog protecting this other dog I was in awe, how amazing truly it was. So glad it had a happy ending.
