Vet Saves Dogs From Explosion
Horst Hoefinger

It’s hard to believe, another story of an explosion which caused an animal hospital to catch fire. Luckily in this one a vet broke open the kennel using a cinder block, saving most of the dogs.

Fire Chief John Farrington says about 12 dogs were rescued from the Cape Cod Animal Hospital but a few animals are missing. He doesn’t know how many were in the building in Barnstable, about 5 miles north of the Kennedy family’s Hyannis Port home.

Neighbor Ken Lacasse tells the Cape Cod Times vet Scott Munson broke the kennel door with a cinder block.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation, a natural gas explosion is suspected.

Oh dear! Better news then what happened at Pazzazz Pet Boarding, but oh! How I hate to hear this! That vet is definitely a hero!

Good to hear that most of the dogs survived atleast. Always sad news hearing a kennel catch fire.

This is my dog’s animal hospital and we were horrified by what happened. We also use it for boarding. If it wasn’t for Dr. Munson, it would have been much worse! Thankfully, as of last Thursday all missing dogs had been accounted for. One dog, a puggle named Dutch, spent 3 nights in nearby woods which are full of coyotes before being caught and reunited with his owner.

I forgot to add…sadly, 3 cats and 1 dog perished in the fire :(

I work in the kennel one day a week for my part-time job. Dr. Munson tries not to make a big deal out of what he and his neighbor did, but they are heroes whether they want to be or not. We love the pets who come to stay with us and are heartbroken at the loss of 3 cats (2 of which lived at the animal hospital) and the one dog we lost, but we realize what a heroic effort was made to save the surviving pets. When Dutch (the puggle missing for 3 days) was finally found, we were all so happy! The silver linings: Dutch was found alive and well, this was not during a school vacation or summer as the hospital would have been full, and this did not occur during normal business hours or not only would MANY more pets have died but there would have been human casualties as well. While heartbreaking, it has also been heartwarming how the town and surrounding communities have responded to this tragedy. We thank you all for your caring and generosity.
