Love Is In The Air-Win A Sweet Treat Jar

It’ Friday, and love is in the air. For those that didn’t win a goodie basket, don’t despair, you have a chance to win your pup a sweet treat jar.
Debby Carman, who generously gave us the cute dog bowl not long ago, has stepped up to the plate again and is giving away a handmade treat jar.
Debby Carman is an imagineer. She is a Laguna Beach, California artist, author, cartoonist and fabulist who dreamily draws, paints, sculpts, whimsical cats, dogs, and other creations of the animal kingdom. She chronicles random notions, furry motions and life’s nutty nuances depicting fun and farce, frolic and foible in her distinctively recognizable style and expressively vibrant color palettes.
Debby is noted for the MOST BEAUTIFUL hand crafted porcelain ceramic dog and cat bowls and treat jars on the planet; one of the few people in the world creating custom and uniquely distinctive pet bowls and collectibles for her clients furry fourleggers. Debby is recognized by numerous elite breed dog clubs throughout the country as their national specialty artist.
Debby’s pottery is really nice, we ordered a treat jar for Bo and it’s great. It has a whimsical likeness of him, truly capturing his mischievous personality, and makes Lisa smile every time she walks in the kitchen.
When it comes to dog stuff Lisa and I may have gotten a little carried away. We have a painting of Bo hanging above our bed, pictures throughout the house, a platter in the kitchen with Bo and Copper stating “The chef is not responsible for dog hair in the food,” and now a treat jar. Soon we’ll be able to add Bo’s book* to the mix. If we think he has a swollen head now, wait until we have that on our shelf.
If you want to win a sweet treat jar to give to your pup for Valentine’s Day just leave a comment in the comment section sharing a doggy love story. How you met, how you show love, what you love about your pup, or even what your pup loves about you. Anything to do with love is fine. The contest runs today through Friday, February 20th when I will pick a winner.

It has to be a love story , I do rescue and have twenty two furkids. Most are handicapped.
My GSP, Sophie Claire loves me no matter what. She not only mothers me, but her fur brother Harley Davidson. She potty trained and educated Harley on proper house behavior and even taught that little schnauzer puppy to point birds. If I am sad, Sophie is there to put her head in my lap. She sleeps under the covers and right next to me. If I am sick, she is curled up beside me. I can look into those big eyes of hers and see the complete and endless devotion that she has for me. When she wants to play ball (a never-ending game) she runs over to me and drops the ball and runs to the door. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we humans could accept everyone for who they are including our faults, the way canines do? I am so grateful for my precious Sophie Claire.
TUG OF HEART…Murphy came into our lives in August 2005. Murphy came from the SPCA. He’s lovin’ caring ways, tugged at the hearts of all who meet him. As his auntie (1 of 3), i’ve shared with all my heart the love that is Murphy. He’s a very kind, warm hearted soul, he came in a moment of need to tug at our hearts. As apart of his furever family, he’ll always be the furst pup in my life.
Samoa is a Rescue Dog. He was one of a litter of 4 who were left at a local Humane Society. He is the greatest dog in the world. He joined our family just before Christmas 2007 and is greatly loved by us all. He is the best friend of our Labrador Savannah, and the mentor and father figure to our latest rescue Dublin Rose.
We would not be the same without him. He is living proof that some hearts are made of gold and that you can’t judge a book by its cover.
Samoa, baby – you are always beautiful to us. We wouldn’t know what to do without you!
Dubs, Savvy and Mama!
Ping is my love girl. She was given to me by a friend who could no longer care for her. (divorce issues). When he was able to bring her to me, it was very apparent that the ex-wife to be had not been feeding her. She was completely emaciated and was horribly aggressive where food was concerned. It took almost a year for her to relax, feel comfortable and become a part of the family. She has been with us for six years now and she loves nothing more than showing us how much she loves us. She will get in your lap, throw her head back and make groany noises, cuddle you so close in the bed you don’t know when you stop and she starts or just sit on your feet.. We love her back just as much. We think she is just about the most perfect dog ever.
Sanford is the World’s most lovable Dog. He has such an unconditional love for My Husband and I. He gets sooo excited when I come from work, he wags his little stump of a tail so vigorously that his butt shakes. He will sit with me for hours just laying on my lap til he falls asleep. He wants to be with you every waking moment. He knows no strangers, everyone is his best friend. He is like an Angel sent from up above.
Yvie was dropped off at the shelter at 10 weeks old. She was a petstore puppy who had separation anxiety. We were going to foster her for a bit to see how things worked out.
My sister was bringing her home, and on the drive she pooped and peed in her crate.
When I first saw her she was a tiny puppy, covered in poop and smelling of filth.
It was love at first site.
Needless to say the foster didn’t work out, and we adopted her a few days later.
Every day we are reminded by the fact that we were the luckiest people in the world the day when a puppy, covered in poop came through our door.
How we met is truly fate. The month of December had just rolled around the corner and everyone was busy scurrying around finding the perfect gift for everyone they knew. My twin brother, my mother and myself where making some stops at the old Mission mall with it’s half of it’s stores half empty the old mall was soon coming to the end of it’s years but it was still one of our favorites. We had made all of our stops but like we did every time we stopped by the small animal shelter that was located in the mall (just to let you all know it was not a pet store, it was a animal shelter). The Pet Connection. It was a fairly large area the front room had cages spaced out very nicely with happy cats meowing and flirting with perspective adopters. The dogs where in the back the room there weren’t as many animals in the back but the dogs had spaced kennels and pens most of them pacing back and forth or jumping up to catch the attention of someone special. We had been in out new house for little over a year and didn’t even have all of our fence up, though in the back of my heart I so wanted one. My first dog Nelson had been gone for over a year and I did everything I could to be around the canine kind, even if it meant walking my neighbors dogs or even helping raise my neighbors new puppy. We looked around for a good ten minutes until something caught my mothers eye, she called me over to a long skinny dog. I looked at the and my heart sunk, he was nearly bald his multi colored fur had been shaved as much as it could be, he wore a large red harness that mad his long basset like body look even more longer, he was also very skinny and I could see his ribs very clearly. I read his sheet learning his name and his story, they called him Herby and he was a one year old lasha-poodle-basset mix who was dropped off by his owners with his “wife” and two kids who had already been adopted. He wasn’t fed a regular meal and his fur was so matted they had to shave him to the skin. My mom first thought of our good friend Carol who recently lost her young loyal and beloved lasha Jackson to cancer, so she called her and told her about the dog. Though five minutes later she called her back and told Carol that she couldn’t have the dog because he was coming home with us. We called my dad who was mad because he was in the middle of cooking a pot roast, but he brought my younger siblings in and we made all fell in love. A few days later he had a new name , Murphy, and a new home. He has been there for me ever since and is my dearest fur baby and my love. He is and always will be my valentine.
I am the proud mama of three furbabies, Tipper, Oreo and Lady. For over two years I had no home for my furbabies, and there were some who said give them up. Tipper, I had been his foster mom from the time he was about 3 to 4 weeks old. His mother ran with a pack of dogs, and a local rescue was contacted to take these pups. I fostered him and 2 siblings, when it came time to let them go, I adopted him. rom the time he was pulled from the crate, he grabbed my heart. Oreo, I kept him from going to the pound. A co-worker in my building found him and siblings dupmed brought them to work in hopes of finding them homes. I had 3 dogs at the time. He was about 10 weeks old. I avioded going to see them knowing it would be hard to resist taking one. But lunch passed and the afternoon mail came and the guy asked had I been down to see the pups. I said no, figuring they would all be gone, but no he said there 1 or 2 left, so I went. Oreo was the only one left and if she had not found him a home by the end of the work day, he was going to the pound, I picked him up and he just loved and kissed me, you probably know the end of the story, he went home with me. Now I had four dogs. Two of my dogs were seniors, 10 to 12 years old and large breeds. Well about a year passed and yet another joined my family. Entering the picture, Lady, she is an AMStaff or an AM staff mix, maybe 6 months to a year old. Someone either dropped her in my old neighborhood or moved off and left her and winter approaching. She may of been on the street 2 to 4 weeks. Neighbors and myself feeding her. But she seemed to prefer my house. She could see me come home from work and she’d take for my porch. It was like just before Thanksgiving or Christmas, getting cold. The day before we had had an awfull rain sotrm, I got home really late for some reason and I was worried about shelter for her, so I went down a nearby alley where she had always came from, she came out of a hole in a fence barking, but was dry, so I knew now she had shelter. The next day I drove over to the next street and looked around to see if I might could see her. There was what appeared to be an abandon house that had a scaffulle out front, but it looked like it had not been used for a while. there was a detachable grauge where I saw her, so assumed that was where she had taken shelter. Looked around and it just looked like no one had lived there for a while. So that afternoon when she came to be fed, as I went back in from setting her food down, she just very politely slipped right in the door and hopped upon the couch by the door, and set down like “I’m home”. And I set down to pet her and she was all over me with kisses by the galore. With it getting cold, I thought I’ll let you stay in my laundry room while I find you a home or rescue. Being her breed and no agression my concern was with my neighbor being like it was, a high crime, runned down etc, someone might pick her up and make a fighting dog. But everyone I called, rescues, Nashville Humane etc once I told them her breed they did not want her. The local pound said she’d be PTS. Shortly after I lost my home but I would not give up my pets. I held on to them. the summer of 2006 I lost one of my senoir dogs, then 2007 I had to have my other senior PTS, due to a stroke and I was left with my three I have. God gave me wonderful fosters and last July, we got back in a place to call home. And I had several of those who said to give them up, appoligize for telling me that. During the over 3 year ordeal, there times I wolud almost be ready to give them up because a foster just was tired and each time, I told God, if you want me to give them up I will, but he always made another place for them. The hardest two to keep placed was Oreo and Lady. Over the course, they stayed together in 5 different fosters. They spent just shy of year at 1 rescue. Then they went to a home, but the lady’s 11 year old son was loud and rambunsious and kept them nervous. They then to another home where she had several fosters and done fine, but I ened up about 50 miles away and wanted them closer, so another just getting started rescue took them, but the lady there was more of a cat rescue and she really did not know how to handle dogs, so just about a month before getting a place, they ended up in another home who really fell in love them and they did my dogs as well. Tipper went from the first rescue where Oreo and Lady for almost a year to another and stayed there until I got a place. He and Oreo had some issues that the first resuce did not feel they could deal with. I know this is a long love story and it may not be the winner. But I just want the world to know how much I love my furbabies and how much they love me. They are what kept me going and striving all the time I and they had no home.
I guess I’ll tell my love story about Duke.
He was a bald little puppy boarding at the daycare that I worked at with a Chow Chow. He would climb up into her fur on her back and fall asleep. So cute.
He was so furless!
Well, the owner had fallen and hurt herself and so sent her sister to pick up the dogs. The sister got there and said “I’m here to pick up Bessie and I need someone else to take Patches (his name at the time).
Well my hand flew up in the air before I even know I was volunteering!
I offered to foster him for two weeks but told her “After two weeks, he is mine as a part of our family.”
She said ok.
Duke has been with us ever since and has lots of fur now!
Tir is my love story…
I acquired him at 10 weeks of age from some wacko humaniacs,( who bottle fed him for 10 weeks but did not give ANY vaccines!)
Two days after I got him,(two days after he got his 1st vacs)- he broke with Parvo!
One week and $500 later he survived Parvo and went on to become my best pal as well as my current service Dog.
He turned 12 Oct. 6th, but greets me every morning at my bedside, he waits for me to lean on him to get up, and makes sure I can get where I have to go for the rest of the day.
Last thing at night he walks me to bed, then goes downstairs to sleep in my chair.
He is my true love.
Tir got his CGC at 6 months and became a TDInc Therapy Dog at one year.
Tir is slowing down a little and I am thinking of a new Service Dog… Tir will of course stay as Head Dog…until he is called Home.
It was a plot, all a plot! My She thinks so anyway. Of all the dogs and all the people, why oh why did I have my eye on her?! I just knew she was mine, I leapt up to be noticed and followed her along the fence and only let her pet me. Took me nearly 18 months to trust her, took her nearly that long to figure out all my special needs, as I am a special needs dog. A plot I tell you, it was all a plot. And she really is the only one for me.
Love the circus? Come to my house. “Three Dogs and a Baby”? Isn’t that a movie? Our house is full of LOVE. All kinds.
Our first was MR. CODY BOXER. He was an ornery puppy & still one going on 6 yrs. old. We love Cody because he’s a clown. He’s ornery as they come, headbutts humans, pops balls, & bounce kisses the baby. Cody loves to attack baby’s stroller on walks & throw a skateboard around in the yard. We love that Cody enjoys posing for pics wearing anything anytime anywhere.
Our second was MACKENZIE DIVA BULLDOG. She’s an incredibly unique American Bulldog mix. No other dog can top her. Mackenzie loves to lay on Mommy’s back – all 80 doggie lbs. of her. Mackenzie loves her belly rubz, doggie day care, & loud obnoxious men. We love Mackenzie because there’s no other dog like her. She has learned to patiently wait in-line for Mommy’s attention now that baby is here.
Our third is GOLDEN ROCCO TACO. He’s as sweet as they come. Rocco loves digging holes, chasing lizards, barking at nothing, & playing ball with the baby. Rocco loves being our daughter’s sidekick. They love sharing all the stuffed animals in the house. We love Rocco because he’s the most perfect dog for our baby.
We love that we got all our puppies first before we had a baby. They were all good practice for our baby. They taught us how to love – to give love, share love, & be loved. Share the love with your loved ones this Valentine’s Day!
Horst,
Did you ever announce who which fur won the cute dog bowl from this same artist?
I have a house full of the best doggie kissers in the world! I swear they must’ve been watching lots of sappy love stories or something when nobody was home cuz my boys really know how to kiss their Mama.
My Angel Indy was always the best kisser of them all. He would give you an open mouth kiss right on the lips at any time. All you had to do was ask. He would just wrap his lips around yours and bite ever so softly with his lips. It was the cutest thing ever! The others are really good kissers too (not your typical doggie lick) but not quite as good as Indy. He had the best kisses of all. I will never forget those Indy kisses.
we may have just bought Bessie from her breeder but, even though that’s just a simple and one of the most common reasons to how you meet, this is one unfamiliar meeting. Really, my brother and I first chose her sister, Bianca, then the next day when we were about to pick her up, she had allergies then we had to pick Bessie, until we got home, we immediately found out that it was faith that made her live with us. Because, who would like to call the name Bianca all over again like “Bianca! Bianca! Here girl!” no way too un-slippery in the name. As I was saying it was love at——-second sight! BOL
My boyfriend and I moved in together right after his dog had passed. We talked about getting a dog for my kids and to replace the empty spot in his heart but could not agree on a breed. He had always wanted a Chocolate Lab but I didnt want a “big dog.” I was more leaning toward a “lap dog.” Eventually he convinced me and we found a reputible breeder. The day we picked Reeses was a happy one. He was the sweetest thing I had ever seen!!! Reeses has brought our family together and made us all happy. Mark got his lab and since Reeses was the “runt” of the litter…he stayed true to that giving me my lap dog in a sense because he is small for a lab and has what we call “chicken legs” haha!! But he couldnt be loved more!!!
I was found as a stray near Eustis, Florida. I spent a month in doggy jail before I was found and taken in by Schnauzer Love Rescue! I had a great forster mom who really helped me. Than the Tuesday before Thanksgiving 2007 my new parents gave me a forever home! I am so happy with them. Than on Thanksgiving day I met my mommy and daddy’s four grandchildren. WOW! I have a family. I have sooo much to be thankfull for!
Mudge is the furry love of my life
He’s learning to say, “I love you.” Well, I think it sounds like it, anyway….he’s got those three syllables down and what else could he possibly be saying, right? 135 lbs of LOOVVEEE…that’s my Mudge!
Hailey is my 7 yr old black lab. She is 85 lbs and full of LOVE. For Valentines day we adopted Shelby Valentine! She is a 1 yr old puggle. She already is part of our family after 1 day! All she wanted for Valentines Day was a loving home and all we wanted was a loving addition to our family. We are all happy!
I share my home with four Basset Hounds so there is definately plently of love going around at our house. Of the four, Scout is probably the best kisser… he is the smallest, and though he weighs about 46 lbs, he loves to sit in my lab. If I want a Scout kiss all I have to do is pucker up and say “can I have a kiss?”! Hunter also freely gives kisses, though he is a bit more “enthusiastic” than Scout! He really knows how to “wash” his people’s faces! The girls, Gracie and Precious, don’t really like to kiss, when I try to get kisses from them, they look at me like “No way! I don’t know where your mouth has been!”

OUR DOGS, a poem by David Jeffrey from Canada
A love uncontested, without compromise,
is what we see when we look into our lovely pets
eyes.
The way they adore us, with love to no end,
is the reason we call them Man’s best friend.
With tails a wagging and affection to spare,
makes them so easy to cuddle despite all their hair.
We treat them like children and adorn them with toys
trust that they will play and protect,
our own girls and boys.
God gave us dogs so that we may know,
the unconditional love,
that only a pet can show.
Marley had her name before we even had her. My friend Breeds show pugs and she asked me to co own Marley She came into our lives when she was 8 weeks old and has been a blessing. We bothe worship the ground we walk on she and I that is. She is a total Mommas Girl and when we go on outings and to the dog park she dosnt want to play but is totally happy to mingle a little while with the dogs and then its up on the Bench and she just gazes at me the entire time. People cannot beleve how she just gazes non stop and I hear them say look at how much she loves her momma isnt that sweet. She is a true love.
Aislinn, my 3 year old dog, shows her love for our brand new kitten, Frosty, by allowing her to wrap all four paws around her face and hang off it. She has never been a really tolerant puppy, but for that little kitten, she’ll allow anything.
There is a certain love,
In which dogs can show,
Their slobbery kisses,
A chance to know,
They’ll love us forever,
And not let us go,
They may drive us insane, round the bend,
Once in a while,
But thats why we call them ‘Man best friend’.
They wag there tails to show us a great love,
Like wet-nosed angels from up above.
Dont let them go,
Because you will never know,
When oneday he may just disappear.
We’ll continue to love,
With a hole in our hearts,
Dogs,
They are the missing part.
The first day I brought Roxy home, she was very nervous and scared. That night I put her in bed with Murphy and I and she licked my hand until she fell fast asleep.
Everyday since then she has done the same thing. When I come home everyday she runs up to the door and jumps to give me kisses, even if i’m gone for only 10 minutes! I have never felt more wanted in my life, and the undying love she has for me is amazing.
It all began a little over 4 years ago. A little mini schnauzer, I named SAMSON, came home with me and my life would never be the same.
SAMSON in one word is ‘adorable’. He is also loving, playful, very smart, and is always striving to please me. His favorite things are chasing squirrels, chasing birds, chasing water from the garden hose, and well, anything involving chasing, including chasing mommy!
My once empty home is now filled with love and laughter. And it’s all because of this one little amazing dog. Everyday is an adventure with SAMSON. And I always look forward to tomorrow.
Love the idea of the Treat Jar. Sanford has treat bags Everywhere. The Bad part is that his daddy give him treats all the time but leaves the bags unzipped and sitting on the stove all the time. This Treat Jar would make the perfect addition to our Kitchen
I’m not writing to win the prize. I’m just here to say that the stories are all beautiful and I learned that I already have the prize. He’s waiting for me to come home right now.
I have many furry babies and love them all, but ButterBean was our first. Her mom was left at the local shelter after hours outside and in terrible shape. She had 3 puppies only 2 lived. A friend was a volunteer at the time, the shelter was going to put all of them down because of the poor condition of the mother. This friend said no and took all of them home and got them all well and healthy. We commited to ButtterBean before we ever saw her. When they brought her to us it was truly love at first sight. She will be 6 in October and doesn’t see very well. She is very loving and protective. She is the Diva of the house, and she knows this. She is my computer buddy, always in my lap. I can’t imagine not having her or any of the rest of them in our life.
Bella was a tiny 1.4 pounds when I got her.I used to carry her with one hand. She would snuggle her head on my shoulder and sigh before falling asleep.
Now it’s 3.5 years later .She’s 9 pounds and still sleeps with Mommy. Now she puts her head under my arm and sighs before drifting off to sleep. She used snore and it was so quiet it was almost like a purr. Now it’s considerably louder-more like a puppy locomotive. That’s ok though. She’s still Mommy’s Girl and my best Valentine.
We love our dogs so much. They are the center of our lives, and are always involved in our plans. We currently have 3. All are rescues. I couldn’t imagine buying a dog, when so many deserving dogs are out there waiting for their forever homes. We have fostered a couple of dogs as well, all who found their perfect homes. We are currently devoted to our local charity, the Collier Spay Neuter Clinic. We are confident that when this clinic opens its doors, we will be able to reduce the number of animals that are needlessly euthanized due to pet over-population. If we had unlimited dollars and time, we’d love to be a rescue sanctuary. For now, we save the ones we can, and dedicate our time to the organization that will be able to prevent the deaths, by preventing the births.
We love our dog Seamus more than we can say, we have made numerous financial and personal sacrifices to ensure he receives the proper care for his Epilepsy. After he was first diagnosed, his seizures began coming with increasing frequency and we had to take him to see a specialist who put him on a very expensive medication. We had to make some cuts in our spending and in our social life, as we need to be home to give Seamus his medication twice a day. thankfully the medication worked and his seizures are controlled and he is back to the same happy silly boy we love.
Mulligan put the Mull-can mind meld on me. I lost my dog Tyler about 2 months previously. The local dog shelter was having a “show day” at the pet supply store. I stopped in on the day before vacation. I saw Mulligan. He was not at all the type of dog I like. I like dogs with longer hair, shepherdy type dogs, with pointed, stand up ears, and a long snout. Mulligan is a Boxer mix, with short hair and floppy ears.
The next day I went on vacation and I “dreamed” of Mulligan. When I came back I visited the actual shelter and looked at other dogs, because Mulligan was just “not my type.” However, I just kept feeling that if I chose another dog I was going to have to stop and explain myself to Mulligan. Really, I kept going over explanations in my head to tell to Mulligan of why he was not going to be my pick.
Finally, I just gave up and decided to bring Mulligan home. His Mull-can Mind Meld was just too strong for me.
9years ago my sister called to tell me a friend’s dog had husky puppies. (She knew I’d always wanted a husky) I told her I wanted a female that you could hold like a baby. I didn’t know much about dogs, but I knew you wanted them to be happy when you put them in this position. The last thing I needed really was a puppy. In the last 2 years I had my first child, lost my father, and seperated from my husband. I could barely get out of bed in the morning, my depression was so bad, I thought about ending my life. I felt I was a failure and anyone could raise my daughter better than me. I was sure however that no one would take this hyper, doesn’t listen to a word you say dog I had. I was sure he’d end up in the pound. The energy this dog had and the exercise he needed just to act half sane was extreme. (or so I thought)That dog made me get up in the morning and go for a long walk. The walks slowly made me feel better.I started reading any books I could get my hands on about dog behavior. I began training him, grooming him, caring for this wonderful animal. I began caring for myself, setting goals and reaching them. He helped me find happiness, showed me I was worth being loved…loved the way I was. unconditional love. In the last nine years he has not left my side, ups and downs, he’s never once let me down. I’m not sure I’d be here today if it wasn’t for him, Today, largely because of him, I love my life, my job(I’m a dog groomer), myself, and am happy to look forward to my future. oh I fogot to add, he never would let me turn him over on his back, and “he” wasn’t a she like I wanted. He WAS what I needed, someone to mend my soul. I let my daughter name him, I think she did a great job…she named him Bandaid.
Most of us are rescues and we live like royalty in our furever home. Our mom showers us with lots of love, treats, and freedom of the house. She loves us all!
I would love to win a sweet jar for my Sweetie.
I met Princess at a kill shelter. Actually, they said she was a Pomeranian, who didn’t like other dogs and was listed as aggressive. She only had seven days to be claimed by her owner or be adopted or
go to doggie heaven. No one else showed any interest in her during that week.
I really only wanted a toy breed, but when I sat down on a chair, she jumped on my lap, and rested her head next to my neck and sat sooo still, as if waiting for a confirmation that her action was okay. It was instant love!
By the way, that was a great once in a lifetime trick that she pulled, because she does not like to be picked up, nor has she ever performed that postion again, no matter how hard I try to get her to do it! Yea, I am a sucker for puppy-love!
I found My Chloe on craigslist. She was a 1 year old whippet/terrier Mix. She was deemed “dog and people aggressive” by the shelter she was in and would have been put to sleep. One of the employees there pulled her out into a foster and thats where I come in. Since I have gotten her she has become my 3 year old Neices best friend- My sidekick and she gets the first kiss from my boyfriend when he gets home. She LOVES people and for the most part she loves most dogs. I just can’t imagine that this dog who showers everyone with hugs and kisses would have been put to sleep. I know that she is MY VALENTINE because while looking over her original paperwork- She was found ON MY BIRTHDAY. I had been looking for a dog for a year and it was just meant to be
It all started one day when I arrived at a club to meet my brother. This little puppy dragged it’s hind legs behind it as it crawled up to me begging to me. It was covered in road tar, ticks and was so skinny. The owner of the club had his own dog and had been removing ticks from it. He gave me a bowl of food for it as we discussed how anyone could do that to a baby like that. I took him home to my kids and husband, we cleaned him up and let him eat his fill and then to the vet. He was my Bob dog-so smart-minded better than my kids, could say I love you mama. MY brother would bring his friends over just for that. He’d tell them-ask him if he loves his mama and he would howl it so clearly looking up at me. When he was 6, our neighbor moved away and left their little pup there. She was spayed and her tail had been cut completely off. So she became Bob’s sidekick and moved into our home. She’s doxin/screwtail and very much the boss. Soon after we found another dumped pupdog that looked just like Bob and brought her home. They mated and had this beautiful litter of puppies. I helped pull them into this world. Their parents died but I still have 3 of their children. They are 16 years old now. Their parents and Aunt Peanut[who faught for and kept stealing one of the puppies-Wokkie- taught them everything they needed to know, house training and passing on their incredible intelligence. They chorus “I love you mama.” The kids are grown, my husband passed away and they are fading. Peanut is 17 years old and still mothers Wokkie-who’s a midsized dog. They are my oldest and most loved friends, Peanut, Wokkie, Baby and Willow-and I know they won’t last much longer. They’ve all had at least one cancer surgery. We walk every few hours thru the field-just short walks to keep us from getting too crippled up and to help their bodies do those things they need to do. We sleep in my queen-sized bed. We are the girls, living in the small woods, complete within ourselves. We have a vet who does not charge the incredible amounts other vets have, thank goodness. When they pass from this life I will surely die of heartache. But I will rescue another little angel someone has dumped, with no regrets, for they understand and return all their unconditional love and loyalty-and that is a very rare blessing I never want to live without.
Jack my miniature Schnauzer has shown me what love is. I suffer from seizures and Jack can tell a few minutes before I have one. He starts to jump up and whine then he get me to the sofa. Everytime he has done this sure enough I have had a seizure.
When we added another dog Cotto to our family Jack welcomed him and made sure he was always happy at night. They are inseperable. They can be in the middle of playing but if Jack senses something with me he just stops and runs off to me.
Jack is the love of my life and has saved me on numerous occasions.
When I think about a true love story involving dogs, I think of our first rescue dog Joey. He was a 9 year old boxer, found limping along a road dirty and battered. He lived in the shelter for 8 months and because of his age and numerous health problems, the workers thought he would never be adopted. I saw him on an online rescue site and we traveled over 150 miles to meet him.We wanted to give a home to a special dog who wasn’t highly adoptable. We took him a toy and some treats and even the kids were excited about having our first dog. When we got there, they led us into an open courtyard so that we could meet him. What a shock! He was missing half of his teeth and had an injury to his jaw which caused his tongue to hang out of his mouth even when closed. He couldn’t chew the hard treat we brought him and he showed no interest in toys. My God–I thought to myself, this isn’t a dog, it’s a geriatric patient. Sadly we decided perhaps he wasn’t the best choice for our exuberant children. We asked to see some of the other dogs for adoption. The next dog that
we visited with was an over excited 3-legged boxer mix who immediatly knocked my 4 year old daughter to the ground. She began to cry so I took her inside the shelter to calm down and as we were sitting on the bench in the lobby we heard barking from the other room. The shelter manager went in and opened the latch to Joey’s cage (he was the one barking) and he ran right to us to comfort my daughter. She sniffled and blinked away her tears and said, “This is the dog we want mommy.” So we took him home that day and he enjoyed the next 4 years of his life with us being treated like a king. He was wonderful with my children and all the neighborhood children and everyone was devastated at his passing, especially my daughter who always knew that Joey was really her dog because he chose her.
I share my home with two beautiful rescue dogs. A small white poodle and a very large black bouvier. One was mistreated before I got him. I’ve been his pet for 8 years and he’s trained me that when I ask for a kiss, he presents his nose for me to kiss him. Only rarely will he kiss me. They’re my babies and I don’t want to ever do without them.
Bella is a lively, loving Maltese, probably mixed with something. I had been searching for a new little love for months, reading the local paper, checking online. I read an ad that said “2.5 lb maltese, $200.. So we e-mailed back and forth, agreeing on meeting on Valentines day. In her horse barn. ? Seemed a strange place to keep a tiny maltese, but , ok. I drove two hours through the deep snow with my heart pounding in excitiment. What I met when I arrived was a filthy, matted, depressed dog, with a glimmer of hope in her eyes. I would have paid all I had to get her out of there, figuring if she wasn’t the dog for me , I would find her true home. Well, after much gentle grooming, fortified with many treats, I found her under all that stink. She isn’t a typical maltese, if she is only maltese. She has fabulous angel wing ears and pretty curls on her butt and legs. She is mostly maltese white, but has gold ears and back, with a few stray hairs of brown sprinkled in. It has been a year now, I couldn’t ask for a better friend. She loves to play fetch, chew on her nylon bones, and sleep curled up against the back of my knees. I’m trying not to spoil her. She is my true love puppy.
We love our newest baby, he is now 18 months, and weghs 140lbs. He is a mastif/great dane mix. He is a beautiful Bllue merle color with gold eyes.
We saw him in a pet shop and just could not stop visiting. He is a beautiful gentle giant. We call him Pony Boy. Finally the day we heard a woman saying she wanted to buy him , we jumped on it.There was no way we could let him go home with someone else. He is wonderful!

“In October 2000, my beloved pet had died. She was 16 years old. I lost my other beloved pet three years prior. Although I still had my two cats, the house seemed so empty, but not as empty as my heart felt. My two girls had been with me through so much in my life and the emptiness and sadness I felt was overwhelming. I decided I was not going to get another dog, I was not ready.
I have always been a big animal rescuer, and I am sure I always will be…but this animal rescue was different. One morning while I was working, I saw this skinny, injured, scared dog in the distance. She was in a field and too scared to come to me. I left her some food and water. Although I couldn’t see the dog very well, she haunted my thoughts during the day…there was something about her. When I left work I went back, I didn’t find her. I told my family about her when I got home. I felt in my heart I needed to try and gain this dog’s trust and get her the help she needed. Since I am physcially limited, I asked a nurse at work to help me get the dog…each day we left her food and water and talked to her from across the field…she was so scared. On Dec 29, 2000…I knew I had to get her…the big ice storm was coming and she would not survive it. When I pulled up in the parking lot at work, my heart stopped…the nurse had her arms around this incredibly scared, cold, injured, and beautifully spirited dog……..our eyes meet. I opened my car door and cranked on the heat. She laid in the back seat of my car and fell asleep. I called my husband to come to my work and get the dog…I made arrangements for her to go immediately to the vet. I feared her condition was so bad, she would have to be euthanized, but I reminded myself…I was helping her. If she was going to be okay, I knew I could find her a forever home.
My husband called and said on the long drive to the vet, this dog got up in the back seat and gently put her paw on my shoulder…”it was like she was telling me something.” And she was….she knew right then, I needed her, as much as she needed me.
The vet was able to save her and she came to live with us…she filled an incredible void in my heart and I made her feel loved and safe. She taught me that loving again is worth the pain of losing them in the end. It is so amazing to see her loyalty and devotion to the family. For example, one time I fell and she immediately laid across me to protect me until help arrived. She would give her life for her family…her heart is forever ours, as well.
We all love this amazing dog…she is more than a dog, she is our companion who loves unconditionally. She acts as if she is the lucky one, but we really are. She knew I needed her to heal my heart before I did. We are so glad we became her forever family.
YOU ARE AMAZING…AND THE BEST GIFT EVER…TODAY AND EVERY DAY WE CELEBRATE YOU. LOVE, MOMMY, DADDY AND In Loving Memory JAZZI Angel Kitty
