Timberwolf Organic Recall
Horst Hoefinger

This recall went out in June 2008, but I just received an email from a Dogster who feeds Timberwolf to her dogs and just became aware of it.

Since the expiration dates on the recalled foods is effective until March 2009 I thought this message was worth repeating

If your pup dines on Timberwolf Organics brand dog food, then sit up and take note! Timberwolf has voluntarily recalled two formulas from their line of pet food due to customers reporting instances of dogs vomiting, diarrhea, and refusing to eat. Affected formulas include the Dakota Bison and Ocean Blue lines with the following “best by” dates printed on the bag:

Dakota Bison: best by date of February 12, 2009
Ocean Blue: best by date of February 20, 2009
Ocean Blue: best by date of March 8, 2009

If you have either of these affected formulas with the dates noted as above, you can simply take the bags back to the retailer you purchased them from for a refund or a store credit. If you’re an online shopper, you’ll want to contact Timberwolf Organics directly for your refund.

Any Dogsters who use this particular Timberwolf Organics food should be sure to check the “best by” dates.  Thanks to Jen for barking this to me.

Thanks, Jen! Don’t feed this to my pups, but great job in circulating the info!!!!

Thats scary that some good high quality dog foods are being recalled. Thats why I only buy foods that will tell you where they make it and anything about their food you want to know!

I am horrified and sad to see this. I switched my yellow lab to this food thinking it was “better”. He enjoyed it at first then refused to eat last summer. I emailed and called them about the food, these exact bags. This began a summer of health problems that ended with my sweet boy passing away in September. He was only 6 years old and I was shocked to see this, and shocked that this company didn’t listen to me or alert me when I called them this summer. AWFUL! Don’t believe the label that its organic or good for your dog, I made that mistake and I lost my best freind

I am in the pet supply and service industry myself and keep my ear close to the pulse for these sorts of things. Just a note, did anyone ever notice that, even tho the company had “Organics” in the name, that none of their ingredients actually were?! (I’m frankly disgusted at the sly marketing trick they played by leading us all to believe they were organic!)
Also, and this is perhaps the MOST important thing to note: THERE IS NO REGULATORY AGENCY FOR USE OF THE TERM ORGANIC IN ANY PET FOOD RELATED ITEMS! Simply put, any company can SAY they buy it organic, and perhaps they do, but there are no laws forbidding them from adding preservatives AFTER they buy it to make the ingredients keep. Let’s be logical here … Organic means no preservatives, and yet any dry bag of dog food has a shelf life of at least 6 months. Hmmm…
I simply wont buy a single thing that claims to be organic unless I’m buying it “FDA approved Fit For Human Consumption.” Otherwise, it’s a very likely waste of money. (Unfortunately, the Billions of dollars made in the dog food industry alone make for greedy company’s that put the bottom line ahead of the better health of our animals.
Any food that outsources (doesn’t make ALL of their own product IN HOUSE) cannot possibly guarantee the quality of the product they put their name to.
It’s a tough game to stay ahead of, I know! But everyone, let’s keep at it and hopefully one day these big conglomerates will realize that we’re smarter than they give us credit for and that they’d better start shaping up!

Understandable that we’re concerned about a recall, but one that happened back in June of 2008? Come on people, if their food is being sold still and pets aren’t getting sick, drop the issue. Nearly every pet food company on the market now has had to issue a recall- voluntary or not- for their foods. At least Timberwolf’s was voluntary, and they found nothing wrong with their food.

Also, there is no such thing as “Fit For Human Consumption” pet food. All of the meats used in pet foods are from the parts of the animal that weren’t “fit for human consumption”…who is going to buy any meat that has to be stripped off the bone to feed to their families for dinner? That’s right, no one. That’s why these portions of the animal are packaged and shipped to pet food manufacturers, and that’s why it’s not labelled for human consumption.

My dog has been on Timberwolf for about 2 years, and I’ve never had any problems. I know there were some issues last year and some people reported that their dogs got sick, but nothing like that has been happening since then.

I can’t believe some of the things people post on these sites. I would be devastated if I lost my dog, but I certainly wouldn’t immediately blame it on the pet food.

FYI: their website does offer answers to some good questions. Check your facts before you post.

My two dogs have been eating Ocean Blue for two years – including the time period of the recall – and have never experienced the symptoms mentioned. While I appreciate Timberwolf’s voluntarily recalling their product, I would think the incidents reported were coincidental or ALL the dogs eating this food would have become sick.

I have tried many different brands of dog food over the years, and my dogs have never been healthier than since I started them on this food.

Our domesticated pets are NOT wolves, and their nutritional needs have been studied extensively by experts for years. The proof that this research has paid off is in the extended life expectancy we now see in our pets. Just because wolves would not have access to some of these ingredients, doesn’t mean they are not beneficial to our domestic dogs’ overall health.

If raw food was so good for dogs, why do most raw enthusiasts recommending adding supplements?
