Dogs From Wildside Kennels Raid Could Be Killed
Horst Hoefinger

I’ve received a rather unexpected reaction from the posting on Wildside Kennels, both sides being vigorously defended.  While I do know that Ed Faron was convicted in 1989  I do not know if he is guilty now or not, that’s for a court of law to prove.

One of the comments left was from Emily, regarding the HSUS and the killing of “rescued” dogs.  The Wildside Kennels raid was in conjunction with the HSUS. I started doing some research and I came upon an article from the Wilkes Journal Patriot that I found very disturbing.  It’s a long article but the part I want to point out is the following….

Simmons said the 127 pit bulls were taken away with help of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Control personnel with four vans. A tractor-trailer belonging to the Humane Society of the U.S. also was used to transport dogs.

“If the state wins the case, the dogs will be euthanized, as called for under the county’s Animal Control Ordinance, based on the dogs being trained and used for fighting,” he said, adding that the dogs were therefore considered dangerous.

This is not due to the HSUS it has to do with the local ordinance, but let’s call a spade a spade, that isn’t euthanizing it’s killing.  If Vick’s Pit Bulls could be saved why should these innocent dogs, which seem to be in much better shape, be killed without being given a chance.  This is how these dogs are “rescued”, this is unacceptable.

I have sent an email to Best Friends Animal Society requesting assistance in this situation.  If anyone else feels that this isn’t how to “rescue” these defenseless dogs I implore you to contact Best Friends’ as well.

While we appreciate all feedback, and opinions, on this board please remember to keep it civil.  We’re not children, there’s no need to swear to get your point across.

I tried to E-mail Best Friends and could not find any way to log on to make any comment at all. They just wanted to let everyone know that they are wonderful, and that they can use any donations. Please let me know how to plead my [the pit-bulls] case. all dogs want to please their humans, sometimes their humans are stupid! All dogs can be re-trained. The rescued Vick dogs are proof. Please don’t let this kind of ” rescuing “continue.

These dogs don’t need to go to a rescue, they need to go back to Ed’s house!

  6. Jason

English bulldogs will be next because people are making big money off them and the government doesn’t like it. First it’s your dogs they take, then it’s your guns, then it’s your kids! You people will see this isn’t America anymore, you have to stand up now.

  7. Josephine

i know ed personally and it doesnt deserve this. he would give his shirt off his back for anyone. i did send the email if anyone has any other information that i could help save these dogs please email me.

  8. JJ

I agree, that this kind of “rescuing” can’t continue.
I watch the Animal Planet “Animal cops” show, and when they “rescue” dogs they give them a temperament test to see if they are “aggressive” or not. They say its aggression if the dog is resource guarding or dog aggressive, or even if it shys away from something! If it is then they put the dog to sleep without TRYING to retrain it! Just because its difficult to retrain a dog (Or even send it into a new home with people capable of retraining or keeping it away from stuff it dosen’t like.) dosen’t mean you should put it to sleep!
ALL dogs can be retrained, regardless of what they are used for. Police dogs are trained to bite people if told to and they can easily go into a loving home with people and other pets when they retire! Its Pit Bulls now, then next will come Shepherds, Dobes, Rotties, Bulldogs, Boxers and other so-called aggressive breeds. Some people even call Huskys and Malamutes “Aggressive”. Come on! Can you even IMAGINE an aggressive Mal?

  9. Jason

Josephine I know Ed as well I have a few of his dogs. They are the best animals with my daughter in the world! If things go right he will walk out of court a multi millionaire. I just hope his dogs come home.

  10. Chad

It seems to me the dogs life should be the most important issue. Many people have spoken up for this Ed ,this tells me an investigation may be needed to see if the SPCA and state is going over their bounds and legal rights. It seems all the state and government ever wants to do is kill to take care of a problem. It was the same in Vietnam when we ran like cowards we left the K-9 dogs that protected us to die at the hands of the enemy. The government needs to rethink their policy on life is precious to any living thing, next they will want to kill humans because were too old, sick or don’t contribute to society. GIVE THEM BACK TO ED AND HAVE A 3ed PARTY CHECK ON HIM UNLESS THE GOVERNMENT WANTS TO KILL HIM TOO,
LIFE IS PRECIOUS TO ALL CREATURES.

  11. crazy

Chad I’m glad to see you know where this is going, this will not stop at dogs. Soon they will be killing kids with retardations.

  12. Heidi

    We sent!

  13. Blue

What kind of rescuing is this?! People went through all that trouble of saving the poor dogs for them to get killed?! That doesn’t make any sense! The dogs can’t defend themselves- it’s the owners fault! How will these cruel and idiotic people go to sleep at night knowing what thev’e done?!
How pitiful our “laws” and “society” is. How very SAD.

  14. EmilyS

Thanks for posting this additional perspective.

Whatever you think of dogfighting (despicable) or even if you don’t like pit bulls, it’s the height of cynicism, arrogance and cruelty to kill the victims (dogs) without giving them any chance at all. Even Michael Vick had a chance to make his case, as will Ed Faron. The dogs deserve at least that much, rather than being treated the way the law treats seized illegal contraband like drugs

  15. JASON

Your right Emily, it is about the dogs, the government and HSUS wants them dead so that is why this is going one! They want to kill ALL pit bulls not just these “fighting dogs”, ALL OF THEM. After they get all the big kennels the will come after people that own one or two house pits.

  16. Debra

In many communities the pit bulls are automatically put down without any regard. Many of these are loving pets. We live in a world where we have no compassion for human or animal. I do not know the way to fix the problem but know we need to do something now before it is too late. If we allow the government to wipe out animal species the way they are it will ruin the balance of nature. Oh, yeah that is already happening!

  17. JASON

That is correct but it wont stop at dogs. If people have babies with retardation they will start killing them as well, is that right? This will happen people.

  18. steve

Ive known ed for many years and been on his property several times.I was up there last month checking out his dogs and they were all fat and healthy . there were only 2 dogs with scars one was missing an eye from digging and poked it out on a stick (popeye) not fighting scars. The other dog vader is about 10 years old and was fought by the previous owner years ago before ed recieved him. there were 127 dogs about 70 were adults the rest were puppies. i have no idea how any one can say he was fighting dogs or they were trained for fighting especially the puppies. I mean come on!

  19. Daddy's human

Apparently we didn’t learn anything at all from the Vick dogs. This is absolutely horrible.

  20. Jason

Daddy’s human, you are right this is horrible how they just stole Ed’s dogs like that, Joe Woodall in north GA is getting his dogs back today!

  21. Walter

Those dogs need to go back to Ed where they belong.
He’s spent decades perfecting his line of dogs.
    They excel at Conformation Shows,
Weight Pulls and just being Companion Animals.
The way these groups go around confiscating people’s animals is completely Un-American.
Ed Faron fought for this country in the Vietnam War.
And this is how he’s repaid?
Plus those are some of the finest examples of
The American Pit Bull Terrier in the world.
He knows more about caring for animals than
most people. Those are some of the
healthiest well cared for dogs in existence.

  22. CeBe

This is ridiculous I really wish i knew who those undercover officers were. They got places for people like that.If you cross the wrong people like that those dogs wouldn’t be the only being put….well yall know the rest IM OUT!!STOP SNITCHING

  23. Debbie

i am Eds neigbor he cares for his dogs and everybody elses thank you

  24. Jason

Debbie I have been to Ed’s house a few times. Just curious, has his dogs ever caused you or anyone else any problems?

  25. Randy

I bought a dog from Ed several years back, She was a very tiny little buckskin dog. We had her several years unti she became ill and died. She was like one of our kids and it hurt us terribly when she died. Ed promised me another dog when she died. Although i did not take him up on that offer it was still an honorable thing for him to do. Putting his dogs to sleep to “Save Them” makes little or no sense. What is that matter with the laws in this country? Just because one group of people do no;t like something they feel everyone should feel the same way. anyway I hope his dogs can be saved But I wouldnt bet on it!!

  26. JASON

    H
SUS’s senior management includes a former spokesman for the Animal Liberation Front (ALF), a criminal group designated as “terrorists” by the FBI. HSUS president Wayne Pacelle hired John “J.P.” Goodwin in 1997, the same year Goodwin described himself as “spokesperson for the ALF” while he fielded media calls in the wake of an ALF arson attack at a California veal processing plant. In 1997, when asked by reporters for a reaction to an ALF arson fire at a farmer’s feed co-op in Utah (which nearly killed a family sleeping on the premises), Goodwin replied, “We’re ecstatic.” That same year, Goodwin was arrested at a UC Davis protest celebrating the 10-year anniversary of an ALF arson at the university that caused $5 million in damage. And in 1998, Goodwin described himself publicly as a “former member of ALF.”

  27. Ann

Ed Faron’s dogs were consumed with worms. The puppies have an overwhelming case of cocidia, which they get from their mothers by being exposed to their fecis. Some of the females have been overbred until they are skinny and weak and their tits will no longer resume any resemblance to going back to a normal state where they do not practically drag the ground. Many of the dogs had absessed and painful teeth that had to be pulled to keep from poisoning their system. Some of them had almost no teeth. Some of the males have many, many scars that appear to be from dog fighting. The Ed Faron pit bull dogs get along very well with humans..not human aggressive at all. But there is a problem with a few of the scarred males.. when they get loose they go straight for another scarred male for aggressive confrontation. There are now more than 127 dogs, which was the original number seized from Ed Faron..puppies have been born while in the undisclosed location where they are being held.

Wilkes County is in charge of determining the outcome of these wonderful , funny, playful and precious dogs. Best Friends has offered to assist Wilkes County in helping to save these dogs rather than kill them…which Wilkes County plans to do. Some of us are fighting to save as many of the dogs as possible. The dogs are not only victimized by the dogfighter, but also by the groups that rescue them only to kill them.

Most of the great cruelty shown by men comes from
    thoughtlessness or inherited habit.

”The time must come when inhumanity
protected by custom and thoughtlessness will succumb
    before humanity championed by thought.
Let us work that this time may come. ” ~Albert Schweitzer

Tthe dogs are the ones that are suffering and paying for greed and ego of man. The dogs are the victims.

Please contact the following and encourage them respectfully to allow Best Friends to save and place these dogs so that they may live out their natural lives without being victimized. Dogs are living, breathing beings that deserve no less reverence for their lives than man or any other living creature that we “share” our world with.

all i have to say is any dog can be retrained. People just don’t want to take the time to do it. The way i see it the most dangerous animal on this planet is man not dogs.

  30. jody

one more thing i have to say is that you have people on death row who do more wrong than a dog but they get to live there lives everyday. They know right from wrong but a dog does not know right from wrong.

If you go on myspace and just serch kennels, I have sent this to Peta and HSUS, most of the pitbull kennals are set to private so you cannot view the dogs…I KNOW these lowlifes are breeding pitbulls for fighting…PETA and HSUS need to get on Myspace and find the addresses of these kennels, alot in TEXAS and go and save these dogs from a life of HORROR!

Quick, it’s time to buy some presents! Not the holiday variety, though. We’re talking about can openers, sofas, curtains, and silverware. It’s a house-warming party for two of the Vicktory dogs!
Before you get too excited, they haven’t been adopted yet. But for Little Red and Handsome Dan, it’s a big step in that direction. These two snuggle monsters are now living in the same play area. It’s a far cry from dog fighting! These two pups, rescued from the property of former NFL quarterback Michael Vick, are now snuggling it up together.

When they first arrived at the sanctuary, the Vicktory dogs had a long road ahead of them in so many different ways. One of the biggest was confidence. Some of the Vicktory dogs were so totally afraid of everything around them that they commando-crawled everywhere they went, just to stay closer to the ground and out of the way. Each one lived alone in a private play area.

It’s incredible how far they’ve come. They conquered loose-leash walking, socialization, basic training, and learning how to play. Oscar has even become a Canine Good Citizen! No question, the Vicktory dogs are not the same dogs who rolled off the truck, afraid of their own shadows.

And now, Little Red and Handsome Dan are at the point where they can live together as play pals. Some space opened up in another part of the sanctuary, and the caregivers and managers thought this was a good chance to give them a new experience. So two of the Vicktory dogs, all of whom many people thought would never get along with other dogs, are now happy and well-adjusted roommates. These two dogs who have had such a rough life can now zip and race around in their very own play area as only best buds can do.

Surely that’s worth a celebratory chew toy or two! Congrats, you guys.

People who don’t know much about pit bulls can easily be led to assume that they are all killers. That’s not surprising, considering all the lurid stories you see on TV and in the news.
But the truth is much more complicated. Have some pits and pit mixes done bad things? Yes. But there are also dangerous golden retrievers, biting Labradors, chows, and Dalmatians to name but a few – and these are dogs most people don’t think are bad. Any large dog who’s been abused or driven to hurt people by an irresponsible person can be a danger.

Singling out any breed is akin to racial profiling of people, and it’s just as misleading and plain wrong. There are good and bad people in all creeds, colors and backgrounds. Same goes for dogs – of all kinds. But few people know enough about dogs to make the right distinctions, and can be easily persuaded that all dogs of a certain breed or type are bad.

In these articles, you can discover why pit bulls and pit bull mixes are in trouble at this time, and check out the testimonies of real people about their dogs.

You’ll see why banning a particular breed will not make any difference to the real issue of irresponsible and just plain bad people. If pit bulls are banned then another breed will take their place and the cycle will continue.

By learning about the true nature of these dogs we can stop blaming them for being bad and point to the real problem – the people who perpetuate a culture of violence towards people as well as these dogs.

  35. JJ

Gasp! I’m shocked! Maybe the ASPCA is reading this lol! I just watched Animal Cops the other day and they actually said they would work with a resource guarding dog (A Pit Bull no less!) or find a home where the people could live with it! Wooooow! :)

  36. AllanB

Good grief, didn’t the “Vick” pit story teach animal control every where – pit bulls (most) can be reprogrammed and introduced into families and sometimes selected families.
Faith Maloney is correct, ban pits’ today and what……..german shepards next!?!

  37. JASON

ANN I was at Ed’s days before the raid most males at his house are over 9 years old…. not many dogs have nice teeth after that long of a life. As far as scares goes only two dogs had any scares. You people need to wake up and stop believing everything the media tells you. They also trick you into voting Obama in…..wait to see how that turns out!

  38. Steve

My loyalty is not to people or causes or organizations, my loyalty is to what is right is and where the truth is. What is the right thing? Is it to destroy innocent animals without even considering giving them a chance…do any of the Ed Faron pit bull dogs deserve to be evaluated to at least see if even just one of them can be saved? Does not one single dog not at least deserve to live out his natural life with some resemblence of comfort and happiness? Do dogs not have a central nervous system and feel pain, suffering, confinement, boredom, loss of their puppies. Will the dogs not know what is happening to the dogs that are killed in the kennels ahead of them? Does any of this matter at all?

Maybe one day, the laws and protocol will change in how seized pit bull dogs from dog fighting operations are handled..and maybe one day the laws will consider the living breathing dogs have been treated badly and unjustly in the past. Maybe one day the history of some organizations / people / Counties / States (even though they believe they are doing the right thing) will look really ignorant, bullheaded and like the bad guys. I believe that Wilkes County and the HSUS believe they are doing the right thing by killing what they deem as dangerous dogs even though there is no data or proof. And I believe with all of my heart and gut that you are wong!

  39. JASON

Steve the bad thing is that over half those dogs are all pups! Look up 7 things you didn’t know about peta and hsus.

  40. Star

Jason, a 9 yr old Pit is not old. Terriers usually don’t begin to age until they are at least 10-11 and not considered senior until 12-13.
Plus, if you take care of a dog properly it can have shiny white teeth until its 18!

I’m not taking anyones “side” in this, its a waste of all you peoples time to be arguing on a blog. Seriously!

  41. JASON

STAR you are wrong! I have owned over 150 APBTS and not one has reached past the age of 13, you went WAY out there saying 18. All this man’s dogs were on chain set-ups and you think the teeth are going to stand up for that long. You act like he owned 2 house dogs and that’s all.

  42. Steve

Jason, I know all that I want to know about PETA and the HSUS. Those people have some other agenda in mind other than the “humanity” they claim..like destroying whole blood lines of pit bull dogs just because they can. The laws need to change. PETA and the HSUS are evil and the public doesn’t have a clue….they just keep sending that money in so those organizations can seize dogs from their owners and destroy them.

  43. rentman

I have known Ed for years and I know how much he cares for his dogs. I also know he was not in the business of raising the dogs for fighting. It hurts me to hear about this so its untelling what he is going through. He is a fine man that would do anything he could to help another. I also know that he tries his best to give the dog the medical treatment they need

  44. Ann

I talked to a fellow from Wilkes County, NC and he told me that the law officials, including the sheriff, his deputies and the animal control officer there in WIlkes County were willing to co-operate with Best Friends to get the dogs evaluated to see if any of them could be saved. It was HSUS testimony and the fact that no one was in court to speak FOR the dogs that made the judge have no choice but to agree to euthanize them.

The bottom line is that the animal welfare laws need to be changed and the protocol that HSUS uses with seized pit bulldogs must be amended. All of the dogs are automatically killed because they are deemed as dangerous when they are seized from dog fighters.

Each dog must be treated as an individual and evaluated by professionals with the interest of the dogs in mind. If puppies are present in the bust or are born during their time they are being held as evidence, more compassionate provisions must be made to accomodate the mothers and their puppies. Better and more humane holding facilities must be required with better tools and means to make the dogs more comfortable during their captivity.

The way things are being done right now are NOT acceptable. NOT!~

  45. JASON

Thank you Ann, you are right the way things are being done is not acceptable! Killing over 60 puppies is plain stupid, no argument about it!

  46. JASON

Who thinks there should be charges brought against Wilkes County for the slaughter of over 60 PUPPIES?

  47. JASON

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wDSyIBxat7c

  48. Kyle

i am a stong advocate that if any dog is human aggressive it should be HUMANELY euthanized.when i say human aggressive i mean that it attacks or has attacked a human being without provocation in the least.that makes sense…that being said,i am an avid supporter, owner, and breeder of american pit-bull terriers, two of which i literally took from a friend who was fighting them on a semi regular basis…these two dogs have never shown human aggression toward me or anyone else, not even around my friends small children.in fact they are some of the most playful and loving dogs i have ever owned.and furthermore, after merely a month of re-socializing them with my other dogs they have recovered from their past and only act slightly nervous for a moment when a dog that they dont know is brought to their circles…euthanization is a horrible act when not necessary and i believe whole heartedly that any dog can recover from a violent past.all it takes is patience and care.

  49. Jason

Many people think that fighting dogs “which these were not” can never be around kids again, which is about as wrong as you can get. True fighting dogs are about the safest animal in the world around humans! How do you think they are being fought, they are being handled the entire time in the pit. NONE of these dogs should have been put down, if any of the dogs were human aggresive Ed would have put them down.

  50. Crystal

I am a pit bull owner myself and I am tired of hearing all this bull about these dogs! I don’t understand why people are so ignorant! This is supposed to be the land of the free-only fools truly believe that about this country. The government wants to tell us how to raise our kids and what pets we are “allowed” to own? GIMME A BREAK! Who do they really think they are-we put them in office! I’m also totally sick of the BSL mess-it’s on the table about 40 miles from wher I live (Baton Rouge) and has already passed in one parish here…all I can say is just try and take my baby! You will all be reading about me on the 6 o’clock news!!!!!

  51. Sammie12

Great…. so the innocent VICTIMS of animal cruelty by idiot dog fighters are punished by death but the perpetrator gets off with a few months in prison?

  52. Jason

    SAMMIE12…..did you know Ed?

  53. Jason

BIG AADR show in GA on June 6th, conformation and weight pull come get a better understanding of the American Pit Bull Terrier!

  54. gabe

Save the dogs!!! Ed we are behind you bud!!! This man is innocent!!!!

  55. Dink

i have a female from wildside kennels, and she is the best thing that happened to my family. i love her, and without a doubt trust her around my 4 year old daughter. i could not imagine that not one dog could be “saved”! i think that killing all the dogs is not humane. they should be adopted out to families like us who put faith in their dogs.

  56. Jason

The funny thing is that most all people don’t understand is that fighting dogs are about the most safest creature in the world around children, not saying these dogs were fighting dogs. People handle these dogs the entire time they are being fought. My dog from Wildside Kennels wouldn’t know how to attack or hurt anything or anyone. My 4 year old daughter wouldn’t know what to do without him. I think Ed all the time for this great old dog I have.

  57. Jason

THEY ARE AT IT AGAIN! William from Backwoods Pits was raided.

  58. Jan

I have known Ed for 13 years and have bought 2 dogs from him in that time and they are the best dogs I have ever owned. I have 6 children and have found that a strong athletic dog that is practically immune to the brutal treatment of a 2 year old is less likely to bite. No other animal can get near my children. My pits will stand between the animal and my children and the other dog can always tell he better not mess around. My dog also is excellent at killing rats. I am a dog trainer and have never had a dog that was easier to train or more eager to please its master than the pit bull. I know for a fact that Ed carefully breeds for strength and courage and does not fight his dogs. If he has some dogs with scars it is because he has rescued them from those who fight them and now uses them for breeding. the media is full of baloney and people can be very foolish about believing them without proper research. Check out any dog site on the internet and you will find that what I say is the usual for this breed. Exceptions are very rare.
