Despite No Recall Chicken Jerky Treats May Be Dangerous

Our own Dr. Barchas, The Vet Blog, just posted a message regarding the potential danger of chicken jerky treats on the market. I’m cross-posting this because it’s an important article for every dog owner to read.
Dr. Barchas was treating a five-year-old Poodle that hadn’t eaten for a week. He ran numerous tests and couldn’t find anything, so he sent the dog to a specialist for an ultrasound. The ultrasound came back fine, but what the specialist wrote in the letter to Dr. Barchas he found disturbing. The following is quoted from the letter written to him.
In a phone discussion with the owners . . . they reported that their other small breed dogs at home were showing similar clinical signs . . . [at the time the Poodle was discharged from the hospital, the] owners brought with them the chicken jerky treats that they had been feeding prior to onset of [the Poodle's] illness.
The treats are manufactured in China and are supposed to be made up of 100% chicken breast. Last year, I saw a number of small breed dogs that ate similar treats (though a different brand), that presented with the same clinical signs of vomiting and prolonged [refusal to eat] after the vomiting resolved . . . A number of veterinarians at other hospitals had seen similar cases as well, presumed to have resulted from ingestion of a variety of brands of chicken jerky treats manufactured in China.
Investigation of the products was not successful in identifying the offending substance and, unfortunately, removal of theses products from the market was not made mandatory.
Dr. Barchas recommends throwing any jerky treats away, I’m with him. Please stop by The Vet Blog to read the article in its entirety.

That’ so weird! I bought some “100% Chicken Jerky Treats” for my puppy and I fed her ONE and she reacted horribly to it. Never again! Thanks for the insight!
A list of some of the brands would be very helpful since I feed my dogs Chicken Jerky treats.
Okay so it’s only chicken jerky treats, not the beef? Because I feed my dog both.
Please provide the name/manufacturer of this product.
It is not a specific brand/manufacturer, it is all chicken jerky treats from China. The reason being…”Investigation of the products was not successful in identifying the offending substance and, unfortunately, removal of theses products from the market was not made mandatory.” Please go stop by the original article and read the comments left by other readers, you may find them helpful.
Through the years I have had many dogs most living from 14 to 16+. They were all different breeds, and all rescue dogs. Any time I fed any of them rawhides or any thing that looks like a rawhide
their was always an issue. From not wanting to eat that day, to having a hard time passing them out, to minor moans and groans when they were sleeping. I stay away from ALL rawhide type foods.
Princess loves her milk bones and dried liver snacks, and her rubber toys. I feel its enough for any dog.
Years ago, rawhide was cleaned with arsenic that was enough for me to stop feeding it, and today I won’t feed or give any toy that’s made in China. I just feel it is a safer way to raise a dog.
the fda report doesn’t say anything , as usual they are covering thier ass , I have been feeding these treats to my 4 dogs for several years , like any treat you can’t give them to many , they love them but they are like candy , would you give your kids all the candy they want ? moderation , I give them 2-3 each per day , they want more but I am smarter (slightly) than my dogs
it is all natural chix for god sake what next FDA ?
I have been feeding these treats to my dog Nikki, which is a yorkie mix for years and never had a single problem. I found out that the vast majority of the dogs that have gotten sick were fed too much treat or that they were older dogs that already had kidney problems and couldn’t handle the high protein treats. The company that I buy my dog treats from are made in China but, US supervised according to the package. I just fed Nikki one of these treats and are convinced that they are safe, as I work in health care!!!
PS been doing some of my own investigation since my dogs love this stuff , the FDA has tested for everything it seems only problem is with the nut feeding thier dog 10-20 plus treats a day instead of 1-3 , china isn’t the probllem , Duh
A list of brands would be helpfull too. My dog LOVES them but I only give her small pieces, never the whole piece.
It so wonderful to have the internet how else would we be aware of china poisoning are best friends an children to. WHY ISN”T THIS INFORMATION ON CNN NEWS !!!! Instead of all the other stuff they report. My best friend Zeus has been eating this chicken jerky treats he has size in his favor because he is a rottweiler – so for a year I’m thinking I’m giving him a healthy treat.I had noticed changes in his stool an couldn’t figure it out til recently. TO THINK I HAVE BEEN POSIONING MY DOG. My heart goes out to all those who have lost there loved one. You would see me on CNN news if my dog passed. I would kill for my dog. What is this world coming to. I am sooooo pissed. It all is about the almighty dollar. What about a classaction law suit. Where’s Erin Brocovitch for christ sake.
Our perfectly healthy 8 y.o. eskimo/blue healer mix (40 lbs) got her first chicken treat only 3 weeks ago. She had 1 a day for 5 days before she stopped eating entirely and became seriously ill. Her kidneys were ruined and the vet had to put her down after a week in intensive care.
Jake, I still have the bag if you want to feed the rest to your dog in moderation, of course. As for me, I will NEVER BUY MADE IN CHINA again!
