Keeping Your Best Friend Safe During The Holidays
Horst Hoefinger

Mr. Henry gave me a bark about some safety tips to keep in mind over the holiday season.

Decorating and putting up the tree are always fun to do, but there are some dangers to keep in mind when it comes to your furry friend.

Michael’s Pet Sitting of NYC shared this wonderful list of holiday pet safety tips:

  • If you decorate with plants, be careful. Cats, dogs and birds can nibble household plants, and many, including mistletoe and some poinsettias, can make your pet very ill. Be sure your holiday greenery is out of your pet’s reach.
  • The same is true if you have a Christmas tree. Put only unbreakable, nontoxic decorations at the bottom of the tree so there is no danger of your little ones batting a glass ball and breaking it, or of your pup chewing up your grandmother’s antique bubble lights.
  • Why not put some kitty baubles or doggie toys on the lower branches instead? Or, if you have both pets and kids, put the tree and gifts into a playpen. It may not stop Kitty, but at least the tree won’t easily fall down if she climbs it.
  • If you have a live tree, wrap the base so your pets won’t drink from the tree’s water, and keep the birds away from the tree. Many modern live trees are covered in chemicals that can be toxic to your little friends.
  • It’s also important to be especially careful with candles. Your cat or bird may be enticed by the flicker of the flame, and could singe his whiskers or worse. Place glass “hurricane lanterns” or other attractive covers over candles to protect your home and your pets.

Those are just a few of the great tips given, go to A Happy And Healthy Holiday Season For Your Furry Loved Ones to read the full list.

When I was younger my mom would always have us string popcorn and cranberrys to put on the tree . We had the COOLEST black lab mix MAX, well when we came home one day from school the tree was on its side with the strings of popcorn pulled off. Max was a happy pup!

  2. Blue

Our cat Luci used to always go to the bathroom on our tree when we used to buy real ones, but now that we have a fake tree because my mother remarried to someone who’s not an “outdoors-y person” we have a fake one. Now Luci just jumps in the boxes, rips the ribbons and chews on the branches.

Thank you for all that you do! I love your blog!!
I have left you an award on my blog.

  4. Bear's mom

Since having Bear I buy a three to four foot tree and put in on one of my end tables with a tree skirt over the water part of the stand. I also put cheap plastic blubs on the bottom just in case he decides to get them off of the tree. Bear isn’t to into the tree since it is to high to pee on. (Bear is a typical male) The cheap plastic bulbs actually look good when combined with more expensive glass orniments. I am lucky Bear has not ever wanted to chew on cords. That could be because he got good chew toys :) You keep your doggy chewing things he can chew he is happy.

Thank you for the advice….But what if they eat the Xmas tree? My dog is only a year old, so its her first time celebrating Xmas and I have caught her eating the tree. I have stopped her, but is it dangerous?

  6. Holly

hi well it can be dangerous depending on the type of tree you get but nothing tooo serious if you caught the dog doing it early my cat used to do it when we weren’t looking he was fine except he did throw up but just call your local vet office for some advice there be happy to help.

My Golden used to nip the ends of our real tree so I put a scat mat near the edge of the tree. It is very effective and I always rewarded her for staying away from the tree. Since then we got a fake one but she still likes to smell it which is ok. I didnt experience any healthy related issues when she ate our real one though. Merry Christmas!
