Dog Beat With Hammer, Arrest Made
In Atlanta, GA a dog beaten with a hammer and left for dead was found in a park on Wednesday. Robert Kennedy was walking his dog when he saw “Murphy”, wrapped in a blanket on the ground. Nearby was a hammer with blood.
I will never understand how anyone could ever hurt an innocent animal, it’s sickening. The good news is that an arrest was made, hopefully this despicable human will be held accountable for this sickening and cowardly act.
ATLANTA — As Murphy the dog continues to recover in a DeKalb County animal hospital, authorities arrested a man they said beat the dog with a hammer and left him for dead in Murphy Candler Park.
DeKalb police spokeswoman Kiesha Williams said Joseph Waters, 48, was taken into custody Wednesday shortly after questioning and charged with one count of felony cruelty to animals.
The dog did not have a name when brought to the Dekalb Animal Hospital so the staff called him “Murphy.” Dr. Stephen Pope is hopeful Murphy will make a full recovery after being brought in with a skull fracture. Although, he will most likely lose his left eye.
We hope Murphy has a speedy recovery and gets adopted by a wonderful loving family. We hope that Joseph Waters sits in jail and gets what’s coming to him.

Murphy is in my prayers also. Then I need to pray for myself because of the unholy thoughts I have racing thru my head about the man who did this to him.
I can not believe someone would do this to sweet innocent dog. I hope the man who committed this atrocious crime rots in jail for a long long time. I live in atlanta and to think this happened in my town is sickening. Please keep us updated on Murphy, I will be praying for him.

I called Wachovia to make the donation. They did not know about the situation. I found an account number on the internet that someone posted about this incident, but I wasn’t sure if it was legit since some scam artist could take advantage of this situation. The customer service rep said that it IS the account in the name of Murphy the dog and she saw people are making donations to it, so it’s not a scam. Verify name on the account before donating though.
I will certainly pray for Murphy’s recovery and that justice be served. Personally, I’d like to take the same hammer and get 5 minutes alone in a locked room with Mr. Waters…he’d be begging to get out. Normally, I am not a violent person, but this may be the only thing Waters would understand. People who do this kind of thing to a helpless animal are the scummiest of the scum. Thanks for letting us know where we can make a donation toward Murphy’s care…please keep us posted as you hear.
I just don’t understand why people feel that it makes them look big by beating an animal. You know he done it on purpose, who carries a hammer to a park. I hope justice is made for Murphy. and the courts show that this will not be tolerated by anyone. And gives the guilty an extreme sentence. My prayers are with Murphy.

Unbelieveable! There is no reason in life to hurt an innocent animal! That man has the nerve to do such a thing, that would anger the whole nation. I hope the man knows what he did was dead wrong, and prayers for “Murphy” to recover soon and quickly.

We heard this on the news yesterday and immediately called some friends of ours that work at the hospital where Murphy is at. As of this morning, Murphy is doing awesome! He did lose his left eye and he may have some brain damage but the staff there has fallen in love with him and says he will recover beautifully from this.
As far as I’ve heard the man who did this to Murphy was his owner and his reason for doing this was because he apparently couldn’t take care of him anymore. The staff have said that so far Murphy’s care is costing around $3000-$4000 with more cost to come obviously.
On a good note the man who found Murphy in the park wants to keep him!
I don’t understand why laws on animal cruelty are not evenly harsh across the country as what Michael Vick received. I am sick of people who allow free breeding just like anywho who would beat an animal with a hammer. This is all abuse and needs harsher sentencing laws!!!
I hope they give this guy a prison sentence, this kind of monster can’t walk free after such an atrocity. Anybody capable of doing this to a helpless dog can do it to another helpless human being. I’m so angry i’d gladly take a hammer and hit this guy so hard he’d loose BOTH eyes.
I just do not understand the mentality of a person like this. If you con’t take care of an animal that gives you absolute trust and love you do everything you can to find someone that can not try to beat it to death. That is like saying I don’t think I can take care of my kids anymore so I will just kill them. They are sick. They should pay for this to the fullest. To much of this is happening it needs to stop and without a severe punishment it will continue. I hope this person recieves a severe punishment and not a slap on the wrist. Thank God the person that found him is going to take him.
my prayer are with Murphy. I’m a huge animal lover and i’m so sick lately to hear within the past months how many animals have been making news. First, Michael Vic and then the guy that Plays basball, Killed his girlfriend,s cat. Then the guy in Long Island That stabbed his wife’s beagle. And now this. What the hell is wrong with these people..The laws need to change. This is serious. I wish I was in the park that day. He would have lost both eyes. But you know the sad thing about it I’d be in jail for defending the Murphy.

What a sick twisted jerk! I have just about had it with these disgusting creatures that suck the oxygen they aren’t good enough to breath. For the life of me, I can’t begin to think how anyone could do something so incredibly cruel. My eyes just fill with tears thinking about it. I hope they toss the book at him, or use the same hammer on him that he used on that poor baby.
OMG….these pictures bought tears to my eyes just looking at them. How could someone be so cruel to an innocent dog that can’t defend himself. There are some crazy people in this world. He needs to have his azz beat with a hammer. I think that should be his punishment.

There is no excuse for this kind of horror. Has he not heard of animal shelters. I know people are suffering from the state of the economy and if he couldn’t take care of the dog that’s understandable. But take him to someone who will. What planet is he from if he’s never heard of animal shelters. This sort of thing is sickening. That poor dog.

I feel Waters needs to rot in prison. He has to be a cruel mean person to beat an innocent animal. He should be beaten like the dog and then sent to set with no medical help for as long as Murphy did and then rot in prison.

Wow!!! Didn’t this guy learn anything from the ‘Michael Vick Dog abuse Law’?
Those of you that sought interest in this ‘Murphy’ case such as I …Did you notice PETA (who has not been seen since the Vick conviction) or The Humane Society has not come forward with picket signs… displayed neuter Vick signs…or bombarded the media with their “Save the dogs” campaigns?
Oh, no!! I dare not play the race card and articulate it’s because this guy (Joseph Water) is not an African American (Played out accuse)… But… what I will say… is that, it’s about that other color…GREEN ($$$).
They (PETA) saw a great opportunity to capitalize on a young man’s misfortunes (Michael Vick) and before ‘he plead guilty’ they sentenced him to damnation… yet they seem to ignore the atrocious act of Mr. Waters…they did not condemn nor did they send hate mail or allocate their toddler children, whom by the way had no earthly idea why their parents had them wearing ‘neuter Vick’ shirts, as they saw fit to demonstrate hatred during their Anti- Vick lynching…
You don’t see PETA standing out demonstrating acts of violence because of the brutal and malicious acts that JOSEPH WATERS exhibited on his dog ‘Murphy’.
This to me is far more vicious than any two dogs fighting…
And though PETA and other animal rights groups demonstrated such dreadful behavior towards Vick, I don’t wish such act on any Human Being, not even Mr. Waters.
It’s amazing how the same crime done by different people…result in different extremities.
