I just got an update on Brandy, the 14-year-old dog that was being left in a garage, to let us know she has a wonderful new home.

First of all, I would like to thank everyone who played a role in finding Brandy a new home.

I was volunteering at a P.A.W.S. event a few weeks ago when a woman approached me with a situation she wanted advice on.

I was horrified to learn that someone could be so heartless as to move and leave their 14 year old dog to live in the garage. Thinking that it would be OK since he came home every few days to give her food and water. Supposedly the guy had exhausted all of his resources over the past three months while looking for a new home for Brandy.

I posted an urgent plea on the PAWS volunteer message board and Craig’s List. Within minutes I was receiving response and offers for help. One of my co-volunteers had sent my message to her rescue group. A wonderful woman contacted me from the rescue group and told me that she would go get Brandy that night. She would be able to keep her for a few days while I was making arrangements.

Pat took Brandy to the vet the next day for a thorough check up. She had some hearing loss and arthritis which is normal for a dog of that age. Brandy also had to be shaved completely (except her tail) due to the matting of all her fur. What we were not expecting was there was a possibility that Brandy had cancer of her anal glands.

Another strike against her in most peoples eye. Most of the people who had said they would take her backed out so it was back to square one. We always had the back up plan to take her to what seemed like a wonderful animal haven in NJ but we were really trying not to have to resort to that.

Then I was contacted by someone from a local animal rescue/shelter. She told me that she had pre-screened adopters ready to take Brandy as long as she got along with her dog. We were ecstatic the living arrangements sounded just perfect so we were trying to set up a dog meet.

A few days later the adopters decided to back out for various reasons. Grace offered us the option of bringing Brandy there where she could spend the rest of her life if she was not adopted. The seniors have a “living room” during the day but still go in a kennel at night.

I sent out another e-mail to all of you stating this and I don’t know how the e-mail got to Mary but it did. Mary stepped forward and said she was willing to adopt Brandy. She has been involved with various dog rescues for as long as she can remember. She strictly does senior dog rescues, but at Brandy’s advanced age she didn’t feel it would be fair to have go to foster and wanted to let her live her life there.

Off we went to State College, well half way Mary was kind enough to meet us. Brandy is now living the country life with Mary and her husband. They have two other rescue dogs who are a little older, a cat, two horses, and 4 acres for Brandy to check out! I have a feeling she will be very happy here.

So I just wanted to let everyone know the happy ending to Brandy’s story. I was truly amazed at the overwhelming response I received. Along with local support I received offers from people living in Connecticut, Maine, Rhode Island, Chicago, and Ohio that were willing to give Brandy a home!
