Dog Buried Alive
Horst Hoefinger

This is a very disturbing story, not easy to post. Even harder to read.

The purpose of putting this on the blog is to bring attention to this case and help get these people prosecuted.

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — A man and woman under investigation for allegedly attempting to euthanize their 13-year-old dog with a hammer have been arrested on animal abuse charges.

Long and his daughter, Susan, were charged after they hit their Labrador mix, Molly, on the head with a hammer and then buried her up to her neck in their back yard.

Long told KGW Monday he thought the dog had cancer.

Family members previously told KGW they didn’t have the money to pay to euthanize their dog.

But on Monday Long said his daughter had been afraid to take the dog to a veterinarian due to concern she would be accused of animal abuse.

He said they were trying to put it out of its misery and that when they buried Molly they thought she was dead.

But a neighbor later heard the dog yelping and called 9-1-1.

Forest Grove Police responded Friday afternoon to a report of a dog buried alive at a house on Laurel Street. The father and daughter were not at the home when police arrived; they had gone out to dinner.

Capt. Ashbaugh said police entered the back yard and found the dog buried up to its neck with an obvious head injury.

Long and Johnson claimed at the time they’d buried Molly in a hole “in an apparent attempt to limit the amount of blood on their property,” Ashbaugh said.

Molly ended up being euthanized because it was too late to save her.  Dogsters, we need to make sure there is never another Molly, this story is tragic and should never have happened. We are now the voice for Molly, the only one she has.

I urge everyone to contact the Washington County District Attorney, Robert Hermann, and demand justice for Molly.  Contact the D.A.’s  office at 503-846-8671 or via email at webmaster@co.washington.or.us.

Lisa and I just emailed our letter urging the D.A. to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.

  2. Tania

The DA’s office is keeping a list of names and locations to take to court to use against these scum! Please, take a minute to call – the phone calls takes a whole 30 seconds.

  3. Joy Frannicola

I phoned the DA’s office on Monday, and emailed them again today. Thanks to everyone who is helping us spread the word and trying to get justice for Molly.

I live in Oregon and not to far from this town. Have called and am absolutely outraged. For the sake of Molly and all others out there that need our help we can not let this go unanswered. For all the helpless animals make a protest and statement in there behalf.

Mom sent our e-mail. There’s so much maddness in the world & it seems so much of it is directed at the animal kingdom. How did the human race become so cruel?

  6. Kaitlynn

These people are related to me. The woman is my aunt, and the older man is my grandfather. My aunt is horrible and takes animals into their home. Molly was one of them that my aunt got from the pound. She was beautiful, but over the years she became disgusting. My mom said she looked like “a cancer dog.” My aunt did not take care of Molly. She looked zombie-like and dead before this happened. My grandmother had a stroke like 2 years ago and my grandfather was just taking care of her. He couldn’t take care of Molly, too. He is a really nice guy. In his time, this was one way to get ride of animals. I think my aunt should suffer more. It was her dog, she did not care for it nor did she feed it.

  7. Kaitlynn

People to this day are treating animals like family. Sometimes, even better than their own family.

Plus, I don’t think that the dog had enough energy to yelp. I think that is total B.S.

  8. max

my answer to you Kaitlynn is simple. Why didn’t some of the family step in before things ever got this far. This should not have happened. Take the animal back to the animal shelter at least they could have done things right. If she would not let you have the dog at least call some one Hope you think about this poor animal. There is no excuses for this kind of action. There is other ways to do things right.

let me get this straight… they hit their dog who is ILL in the head with a hammer, bury her alive and then go out to dinner to what CELEBRATE??? These are not human beings. My dad a very manly guy in every sense of the word had to have his last dog euthanized a few days before Thanksgiving about thirty years ago… He started eating Thanksgiving Dinner that year and when he realized he was setting aside “Trina’s” portion of his dinner he burst into tears and left the table.
It just makes me sick to think that ANYONE could actually attempt to MURDER their pet of many years so cold heartedly. I hope that the shelter the dog came from gets involved so that these folks never get another dog again.
I have more dogs than I want, I just pray they don’t dump more my way, but I love all eight of them just the same.
Please folks, BEFORE you consider getting a dog THINK…they are a big responsibility.
One more thing, DO NOT take your no longer wanted dog out to the country to “be free” or to “live on a farm”. We farmers do not need more dogs!!! If we do we are perfectly capable of finding them ourselves. Luckily, the ones who have found us get along with our “real’ dogs. I have the motley crew of goat herders. Millie our newest addition keeps the coyotes away. Everybody earns their keep…but… some neighbors not to far away weren’t so lucky, a couple of discarded dogs took to eating their cats, the whole thing culminated with an attack on the wife when she tried to defend her cats.
Anyway, back to the gist…when you take on the responsibility for another living being you should be humane enough to fulfill your role as caretaker/master. It is (or should be) a lifelong(the pet’s life) commitment in terms of love, money and time. If you’re not willing to give, don’t get a living creature for a pet…the pet for you is the former fad…a pet rock.

Please post a picture of Molly, not of the mosters that killed her. These 2 subhuman dont deserve an ounce of mercy. Molly had been abused for a very long time as stated by the vet who checked her. Police said the dog, named Molly, was suffering from starvation, had sores from lying down for long periods of time and was “completely infested” with fleas. An officer called other unreleased details in the necropsy report “horrific.”

I will be posting for eveyone I know to call the DA.
Rest in peace Molly away from pain and abuse in the arms of Jesus and angels

  11. Kubbi

Couldn’t afford to have her PTS??? Yeah, ok; so how was your dinner out?? Tasty? I agree with Ena; would like to see a pic of Molly. Good to know what the abusers look lile tho. Justice for Molly.

  12. Glenda Murray

That Is A Sad And Sick Situation!!! People like that you have to keep a close eye on!!! Because if they do that kind of abuse to an animal, what do you think they”ll do to you!!!! The lest they could do is, to take the dog to an animal shelter and have them take care of the situation!!! Better yet, if they were human beings, let the dog live it’s last days at home ALIVE!!! People like that are crule and cold hearted!!! I feel sorry for any living creature around them.

    Glenda Murray

  13. Abby

She trusted them all her life — even though they didn’t deserve to be trusted. I can only imagine her shock and fear when she laid there while they tried to beat her to death. And then the pain. I’ll never understand the cruelty of humanity.

  14. another dog lover

it makes my skin crawl to think that there’s people out there capable of such sick behavior and if they could do this to a poor old dog , I’m sure they are sick enough to harm a human as well because many pshycos start acting out there sick desires to torture and kill on poor defenseless animals first, then they move on to people. I think that they should be thrown in a kennel with a few of them pitbulls that they rescue from fighting rings and let them try and hit one of them in the head with a hammer and see what happens

  15. wedinks

To think, just because we humans can communicate with each that we shouldn’t communicate for our loving family members. YES, THEY ARE FAMILY. I do understand those pets that are used for specific reasons on farms and the like, but they are still family members. When the grandmother had a stroke, why didn’t they just hit her over the head with a hammer and burry her so they didn’t have to worry about taking care of her? Not just the “Aunt” should be prosecuted but so should the grandfather. More family members should have stepped in when they saw the pets health was deteriorating. Shame on them for not stepping in, wouldn’t that be considered a conspirer in the “human” courts for murder, yes, I think so. They should be required to work at a shelter as part of their sentencing and NEVER be allowed to own another animal.

Rest in peace Molly and know there are folks fighting hard for the rights of animals and we hope to be able to bring you peace with prosecution and restitution from your former so-called ‘loved ones.

  16. Katara

I too, have contacted the WA DAs office, they just HAVE to do something about this totally preventable and horrific ordeal…RIP Molly…

  17. Elizabeth

I can’t believe that these people can get away scott free. I have emailed the prosecutor’s office and begged them to make sure that they suffer at the fullest extent of the law, the way Molly suffered. There is no reason in the world to treat an animal like this. If you don’t want an animal anymore, take it to the vet’s office or the shelter and drop it off anonomously and say you found the dog along the highway. They people should be hit in the head with a hammer!

Kaitlyn, I hope to hell your family NEVER gets another dog. Whether or not people treat their dogs like family or not is irrelevant!!! You should not let a dog, or any other pet, starve to death and then hit it in the head and bury it! What’s wrong with you that you are defending them??? I would not defend any family member who did this!!!!! And whether or not you believe Molly had the strength to yelp or not is BS. You weren’t there to see her suffer. So unless you can say something actually intelligent, don’t bother posting. The fact that you watched Molly starve together under your aunt’s care makes you just as guilty. Why didn’t you say, hey, aunt, let me take Molly off your hands, and then get her to a shelter or find another home for her??? You disgust me as much as your relatives who let this happen.

  18. Carol E Binkley

These people should be treated the way they treated the dog. But they will have to answer to God someday for what they did. mooly is an angel now, Rest in peace sweet little dog.

  19. Linda Way

I hope with all of my heart that the abusers never ever get the opportunity to get another PET . I also cant help hope that their children do to them what they have done to their beloved Pet. you know, bury them up to their neck and beat them with a Hammer until they are tired, leave them, go out to dinner, because it is too expensive to give them proper medical care!

  20. linda camp

THESE PEOPLE NEED ALOT OF JAIL TIME. THIS WAS A HORRIBLE CRIME. THESE PEOPLE AREN’T MENTALLY SICK. THEY ARE JUST PLAIN “EVIL”.

  21. Tony Zoucha Jr.

This is what I sent the DA.

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Please tell me that you people will do the right thing and prosecute these pieces of #$@& to the fullest extent of the law. This is equal to taking a handicap child who can’t protect themselves and doing the same thing. Just when I thought the world couldn’t produce anything more violent and inhumane. What kind of world do we live in…..

  22. Charley

OK, so they could afford to go out to eat, but not to have Molly PTS? OH PUHLEEEZE …… RIP Molly … you are an angel.

  23. Joy Frannicola

We’ve been following this story closely, and calling the DA’s office repeatedly. There has been no information about the hearing on the man, which was supposed to be on Monday. Hopefully, both of them will be indicted and then have to jail time and pay a stiff fine or do community service at a local shelter. I get sick every time I think about that poor girl. Kaitlyn, I’m astonished that you allowed this to happen. Family or not, I couldn’t allow the pet of my worst enemy to suffer. Going to go hug my furkids now, and thank the Almighty that they are safe.

  24. Jet

I agree with fricknfarm. This is so stupid! Why can’t people realize that their dogs have feelings too?! Did they go out to CELEBRATE?????!!!!!! Why did these strange people get a dog in the first place if they didn’t have enough money to pay off the vet bill? That Susan should have gone to the vet, because rather she went or not, she was still charged with animal abuse. She should have been scared to go! These people should stay behind bars for the rest of their life with Michael Vick!!!

  25. Rob

Stuff like this makes me sick, we need a new law, u abuse animals and u either get the same treatment back or double jail time. Animal abusers should go take a running jump BOO!
