Karaoke Dangerous To Your Dog’s Health

Horst Hoefinger

While technology is great, according to a new survey in Britain it can be dangerous to our pets health. The survey was done by Petplan using 3,000 animal owners.

It found that a number of pet owners are unwilling to take responsibility for an accident, saying the animal was the cause. Over a third blamed the pet for eating something it shouldn’t have, another third blamed their animals for getting hurt while jumping off furniture.

A number of strange incidents were revealed through the survey. There was a cat who singed her whiskers when sniffing a candle and a dog who swallowed a pair of knickers.

The survey also included owners of guinea pigs, rabbits, reptiles, birds and cats.  All of whom are potentially at risk from 21st century toys.

Top 10 Gadgets Most Likely To Injure Pets

1. iPod (15 per cent)

2. Laptop (10.8 per cent)

3. Remote Control (10.8 per cent)

4. Plasma TV (10.8 per cent)

5. Wii (10 per cent)

6. DVD Player (10 per cent)

7. Playstation (8.3 per cent)

8. Nintendo DS (5.8 per cent)

9. Mobile Phone (5.8 per cent)

10. Karaoke Machine (5.8 per cent)

Interesting, but the article doesn’t say exactly how these items caused injury.  It does make one wonder how a pet is injured by a karaoke machine, maybe the owner’s singing was the cause.

I wish the author would have told why these things are harmful. It concerns me because I have many of these things in my house. Would it be okay to have them in the house but not around my dog?

  2. Carter

I would bet that most of the problems with these devices would be chewing related. MP3 players, remotes, mobile phones, and game system controllers all pose chewing opportunities for a dog looking for something to do. Small parts can then be ingested by accident and cause harm.

One to add to the list is plastic drinking cups, like the classic red or blue Solo cups you get at Wal-Mart. My Mom’s pom, Gypsy, was chewing on one of those several years ago and got a piece of the cup wedged between her upper teeth. No one could pull it out because she would instinctivley bite down when you tried. We had to take her to the vet and have her sedated to get it out.

As for the other items on the list, DVD players and TVs would probably be falling hazards. One of my dogs was nearly hit just a couple weeks ago when my TV stand unexpectedly collapsed, dumping my 51″ big screen to the floor. Ayla was laying in her normal spot right in front of the TV and had just gotten up to get a drink when it fell. Had it been 30 seconds sooner, I would have lost her.

Other problems with things like karaoke machines and game systems would be people when using them. People have a tendancy to loose their head and act like idiots around a karaoke machine, and that could lead to a dog or car being stepped on, and kids often develope tempers when playing some games, and that could lead to an injury to a pet by accident.

And lastly, all of the electronics contain chemicals that could be harmful to pets. PC boards (circuit boards) contain all sorts of chemicals used in their construction, which is part of the reason PCBs have a faint odd smell to them. Some of these smells, I’ve heard, can cause resperatory problems in dogs.

Still, I thinik the worst issue here will be chewing, so just keep the small items out of reach and all will usually be fine. Usually best to keep things like DVD players and sound systems behind a cover of some kind to protect them anyway, and that should protect them from any inquisitive little noses as well.

I agree with Carter. For the most part these are smaller items that I would like to chew up! An ipod would be ideal for me to gnaw on! Yummers! And how many times have you heard about doggers like me chewing up the remote control! Other than the EMFs (electro magnetic fields) generated by these items (and they are just as harmful to humans prolly) I can’t see the hidden dangers?

  4. kirsty

I’m surprised that a paper shreder was not on the list. i’ve heard nightmare storie of dogs getting their tongues caught

  5. Candi

I’m guessing they are talking about if your animal chews and happens to try and eat these things. Thanks for posting this. If dogs or any pets get a hold of these electronic objects they can choke on the little peices which will cause serious harm. If you have any of these objects just make sure you keep them away from your pet. Candi will eat anything but usually won’t eat anything like these electronics. I have some of these around my house but they are where she can’t get to them. Better safe than never! Please keep these items away from your pet.

(Wrong link with my website…this should be the right link)

  7. Scamp

interesting…i have many of these in my house…and my pups have never been injured…but i have chihuahuas…so they get stepped and sat on due to their small size…

i think it’s the owners just not paying attention to their dogs or letting the dogs get a hold of something the dog shouldnt

and it’s not the dogs fault! the owner is to blame for not paying attention to their pup and not being careful enough with where they set things!!!!

  8. Benji

BOL Maybe the owners singing is to blame. I LOVE that.

Seriously, though… how does a dog get injured by some of these things? Simple: Because their owner wasn’t watching. >>

  9. Naruto

I keep a nintendo wii and lots of game systems in my house but i never keep the wires in sight so my dog should not be hurt by them, but one close call i had with my dog and technology was when he carried away my sisters phone dropper it in his water bowl and continued to chew on it but as soon as i saw him i quickley snatched it away and told my sister she should be more weary when Naruto is potental danger such as electronics.

  10. Naruto

excuse me for dropper it should be dropped and not putting in in front of potental danger and it should say when around after such as

  11. Romy

Oh no!!!My Daddy has 2 Laptops,Santa gave us a Wii,we might get a Kareoke Machine,me and my brother both have Ds’s,we have a DVD Player,my Mom and my Dad have cell phones,we have 3 remotes, and Santa or my parents might get me an ipod!!!

  12. Toby

I’ve chewed my share of remote controls in my misspent youth but I don’t do it any more. But I have an iron tummy, least that’s what Mommy says, so I didn’t get hurt. But it’s best to keep those things up high where doggies can’t get them. I’m kind of tall so I can reach stuff that’s pretty high up. Mostly I just steal pizza now.

  13. Emma

One of my dogs has chewed up several Playstation controllers since they were not probably put away. I couldn’t get mad since it was not his fault they were out in the open. When my other dog was a puppy she chewed a plugged in computer cord and the cord was sparking. How she didn’t get electrocuted I will never know.
