No Pit-y Parade Here

Horst Hoefinger

Pit Bulls have gotten a bit of a bad rap lately, so I wanted to post an event that celebrates these dogs.

Pitt Bull Party in Cambier Park

(Naples, FL)–For too long, the pit bull terrier breed has been wrongly maligned and feared. In an effort to educate people and allay their fears about these dogs, The Humane Society Naples presents its second annual A Celebration of the Staffordshire.

Well-behaved pit bulls and other varieties of the breed and their owners will gather on Saturday, October 18th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cambier Park for a two-hour “Pittie Party” of socializing and demonstrating just how wonderful these dogs really are. (Cambier Park is in downtown Naples, just west of City Hall, 375 8th St South.)

The Celebration ends with participants taking their “pits on parade” in a leisurely stroll down 5th Avenue. Owners of well-behaved, socialized American Pit Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and pit bull mixes are encouraged to attend this free, educational event and demonstrate to the world how wonderful and loving these breeds are.

All dogs must be leashed, per county and city ordinance.

For more information, contact Patricia Connell, assistant director of development at 239-643-1880 x 18 or by e-mail at patricia@HSNaples.org.

The beauty pictured on the left, is Leo, he was rescued from Michael Vick’s property at the time of his arrest. He’s now a certified therapy dog working in medical facilities. What a great story, read more on Leo’s page.

How great is THAT!!!! Now if only city legislators would attend an event like this before deciding to pass breed bans:(

  2. Maryann

That is just AWESOME!! I think every person who thinks pit bulls should be banned should have to go to that and then see what they think!!! No breed should be banned!! EVER!

Phoenix Animal Rescue will also be holding an event in Gainesville, FL on October 18th in honor of National Pitbull Awareness Day. If you’re in the Gainesville area, join us at the West End Animal Hospital in Jonesville from 1 pm to 5 pm!

Of course I am loving this entry because I own a bully mix and I’m so excited about Bully Awareness Day, which is October 25th. I wish I could attend that event in Naples, FL. The city legislators and others who think they know the breed should attend events that are being held in their city. Here’s a site that has a list of events being held in different cities –> http://www.blessthebullys.com/id111.html.

  7. Marsha

Fantastic!! I wish I could be there! So sad that a handful of thugs and monsters are attempting to ruin the reputation of a wonderful breed of dog. Ban the monsters and the thugs, not the dogs!!

  9. Christine

So awesome! I own two pitty’s and they are awesome dogs, well behaved and true ambassadors of the breed. Hope you all have a great time with your dogs and I hope some folks learn some great things about the breed!

I remember in the 60’s German shepards were the “evil dogs” in the 70’s it was doberman pinschers, in the 80’s pits and the 90’s Rottweilers. Unfortunately pits and rotties never seem to have gotten over their bad rep’s. What is the “bad dog of the decade” now? I hope these gatherings open peoples eyes and minds.
