Potential “Real Ham Bone” Danger

Horst Hoefinger

I received a message about a potential danger concerning the “Real Ham Bone” made by Dynamic Pet Products.

I have not been able to find any recall of this product, or any information for that matter.  Regardless, this is definitely something you’ll want to be aware of.

I would like to warn all dog lovers out there to be very careful about the dog treats that you give your dogs. Last week I bought a “Real Ham Bone” made by Dynamic Pet Products of Missouri from Walmart.

Here is what it looks like: . The label says it is made with “100% Food Grade Ingredients” and it isn’t made from China. I thought that meant that this would make a good treat for my dogs. Boy was I wrong.

Trace, my dog, enjoyed chewing on this bone. It did not splinter or anything, in fact there is quite a large piece of it still left. Then in the evening she started vomiting.

She spent the next day at a veterinarian’ s office where she was diagnosed with a blockage of the colon. That night she endured a 4 hour surgery at Brandon Veterinary Specialists where the vet picked out small round pellets of the bone, up to the size of about a b-b.

The next morning she was moved to Florida Veterinary Specialist critical care unit. Again in the evening she had another 2 hour surgery, because the blockage had caused poison in her body. She passed away at 4:30 the next afternoon.

Everyone who hears this horrible story immediately says “Well that sounds like a lawsuit to me”. That is what I thought also. Since then, I have learned that is not that easy to sue on behalf of a dog.

The lawyers say a dog is a possession just like a couch. So, so far, all I have been able to do is write a certified letter to Dynamic Pet Products of Missouri.

In it I requested my vet bills to be paid and their product to be relabeled or preferably removed from the shelf. I don’t know if I will get a response. If anyone else has any ideas about how I may address this issue, please let me know at djurgens12@aol. com.

In the memory of Trace, please pass this email on to all of the dog lovers that you know. This type of bone is sold in all of the stores under several different manufacturers names. I would assume they all may do the same thing. Even if they don’t splinter, they can cause a blockage.

I would like to pass on my condolences to Trace’s owner, and thank them for sharing this tragic story to help prevent it from happening again.

Leave it to Wal-Mart to continue to purchase sub-standard toys, treats and food for our dogs and other animals. I have vowed never to shop in Wal-Mart or patronize them in any way.

I do believe that like to Pimple Ball those who are passionate about our dogs should write to the CEO of the company demanding a recall and proper labeling of their product. It sickens me to think you can package something as Human Grade and then sell it to the public under that guise. Bad… Bad…. Wal-Mart

My father used to say the way to bring change is to sock it too the wallet. Companies begin to understand they cannot continue to lie to consumers or advertise falsely.

When in doubt… buy Merrick. They are a U.S. company and never ever had food recalled during the last pet food scare.

[...] was on the Dogster blog when I saw an entry talking about the “Real Ham Bone” treat sold in stores like Walmart. The bone advertises “100% Food Grade Ingredients” [...]

I am so sorry for your loss. i am going to copy this and post it on a forum I frequent in order to spread the word. I hope the company stops making the product.

  4. John

My dog Natty eats the Dynamic Ham bones all the time- 1 a week actually. She loves them and has never had any problems. so maybe it was just an isolated incident

  5. Jenny

I gave my dog a hambone, not sure if it was this particular brand or not. She did not finish it completely but thoroughly enjoyed it for hours as she does with any bone- but the next day when i got home from work and let her outside, i was outside with her, she was pooping and just started whining and screaming like she was passing a razor! To my horror I looked over to see something hard and bloody hanging from her, and when she was done i examined the stool which was bloody and purely hard as bone. Thankfully she was fine as soon as it passed but for a few seconds i was very scared and panicked for her. i will NEVER give my dogs a hambone again. I know this was the problem as she is only one year old and otherwise completely healthy!

  6. Blue

My old dogs used to like them. My new 4 year old Akita doesn’t really seem to care for them. This never happened to any of the dogs I know or had, perhaps it was because they were large dogs or mabye it was because they only really chewed on it once a week…?
Still, when you think about it, we don’t really know where those bones come from and we know that they treat comercial meat pigs and cows horribly. So maybe the bones only affect certain dogs.

  7. Danielle

My dog got one for Christmas last year and she loved it, chewed it, and then threw up for the next two days. Poor thing was feeling pretty awful and didn’t want to eat until about 36 hours later.
She, thankfully, was fine, eating and playing without extensive vet bills / surgery but neither of my dogs will ever get another one.

  8. Renee&Rumus(my dog)

I’m sorry for your loss. I know how it feels. My fist dog was a black lab/great dane mix and was ran over by my neighbors car. They thought that we were gone(but both cars were in the drive way)and back up into it to get onto the road and my dog was there and his back legs were broken in 7 spots each. So we had him humanley uthinized.

Here is to Indiana(Indie) and Trace!!!!!!!

  9. Lisa

I was so saddened to hear of Trace. AWFUL!!

Thanks for posting this, hopefully learning of this unforeseen tragedy will avert any further incidences through bark-of-mouth campaigning.

My sincere sympathies to Trace’s family and friends.

  10. dianna

That is so sad! I,am so sorry to hear that! You would think
that the company would be held reliable for someone losing their pet! I wish you all the best in fighting for trace!! I seen that dog bone before but never bought one! I,am so glad that I did,nt. But all the fighting and money wont bring back your dog! Hopefully people will read about this and put this company out of business!!!

  11. Jeanne

I’m sorry to say, but any bone can do this :( I’m not sure it is a product defect as much as domestication has probably robbed our dogs of what it takes to digest “real” bones. As someone mentioned it may be the size of your dog and/or the speed at which he ate it. Nevertheless, I’m so sorry for your loss. It seems so senseless :(
    BTW I don’t patronize Walmart either, they’re kinda evil….

  12. robin

this article has me terrified, as I just bought one of these for my dog earlier this week (Wednesday afternoon) … and I was shocked that 15 minutes after I gave it to her (something to entertain her while I unpacked), she had chewed through half of it!!!! if I had known she could EAT it, I would never have bought it (I usually get her beef bones, which she gnaws on indefinitely – and never once gets a piece out of them). as of midnight Thursday night/Friday morning, shes got diarrhea – very little blood, thank God. I’ve given her an anti-diarrheal that the vet has me armed with (she’s had intestinal upsets a few times in the past 12 months), but I will be calling once office hours start to make sure she’s otherwise okay (it’s 6am right now) … especially after reading this article!!! at least she’s not vomiting – I know that definitely signifies a blockage – so far she’s not exhibiting that sign at least. my poor baby … NO MORE HAM BONES!!! why is it that companies are allowed to sell something like this when it apparently makes dogs sick more often than not??? companies amaze me sometimes…

  13. Nena

Cooked bones are a huge problem for dogs, while raw bones are edible.

I’m so, so sorry for your loss and pleased that you are taking this opportunity to educate people. Thank you.

  14. Dawn-mother of Murphy, Pepper & Peanut

All dogs should be monitored while chewing any kind of raw hide, bones or even toys.
We give our two collies a 12 ” American Beef raw hide roll after each meal for about 15 minutes to help clean their teeth. These are plain, unflavored, not basted, no peanut butter stuff inside, etc. Because they can sometimes made a mess on carpet, they chew these in the laundry room with the vinyl floor. While they chew on it I stand there and read one of my books for about 15 minutes and check them from time to time. If one chews off a large chunk I take the chunk away-thankfully I taught them to “give” so we don’t have a battle. After the time is up, I pick up the raw hide and put it away until next time.
My sheltie throws up from all of these types of things so she gets a charcoal biscuit instead. Little dogs are famous for sensitive tummies.
I don’t believe it is ever a good idea to give our dogs any of these types of bones. I know “in the wild” dogs always ate bones but our dogs have evolved from wild dogs and most just cannot stomach these processed bones, smoked pigs ears, hooves, hocks, tendons, etc. Besides not being real good for them, a lot of these things could give your dog a horrible case of gas which would indicate an upset digestive systerm. I know a lot of people don’t believe in raw hides either. I make sure mine are the American Beef brand, not just made from American beef hides that are sent to so many other countries to be processed where they bleach them, treat them with formaldehyde and who knows what other chemicals. Dogs don’t really need variety in their diets and do very well with keeping on the same food and same treat every day. It’s us people who think they need all these smelly salty treats. And they do smell good and sure our dogs might love them but what we love isn’t always good for us.
Besides that, I have always read any kind of pork which would include bacon, ham, unsalted pork etc is very, very bad for dogs.
If you want, you can make your own dog biscuits and can even buy bones meal to put in them.

  15. jess

my husband bought our dog one of these and it has been sitting on the dryer for a few weeks…we were waiting on his bday to give it to him. well i came home last night and hubby had given it to the dog. i freaked out!! i had just finished reading this warning and hadn’t had time to talk to hubby about it. i wanted to take it back to walmart and get my money back, but now that it is open and partially chewed i dont know if i can…esp since i can’t find the receipt. then i thought about contacting the company and asking for a refund, but again, i cant’ find a receipt!! in the meantime…. ham is not good for dogs anyway!!!!
i sure hope people take this to heart. there is only one bag of treats i will buy from walmart for my dogs!

I would like to express my deepest sympathy to the woman who lost her beloved dog “Trace:” and I would also like to thank her from the bottom of my heart for sharing this most valuable information. I have a one in half year old Siberian Huskey named “Zoey”. Zoey is very much still a puppy and loves to chew on treats. I recently purcased at least three of these bones within the last month and am grateful to say Zoey didn’t have any complications from eating these bones, which I feel very blessed. I can’t express my gratitude enough for warnining me of this dangerous product. I wish you the best with finding peace in loosing your beloved pet!

I wish I found this website prior to Saturday afternoon October 25, 2008. I had given all three of my chocolate labs one of these same “ham bones.” By Sunday morning, my baby girl, Maddy, was suffering from abdominal pain and the inability to pass a bowel movement. The other dogs were fine. In the middle of the night, Maddy went potty and the feces was full of pieces of bone. From that point on her pain was still evident and she began vomiting. After talking to an emergency vet, because there was no sign of blood, we waited the night out, suffering together, for our vet office to open in the morning. Maddy was admitted to the vet, tests were run and it was discovered that the bone pieces had caused and infection to develop and now she was showing signs of pancreatitus. Luckily, everything was caught early enough, that she has recovered so far. We have several more days of medicine and observation to go but its likely she will be fine. I talked to the company and they will be calling on Tuesday to “Check on her status.” We will see if that happens. I want these products pulled from all the stores!! The company rep admitted this isn’t the first case of this! Maddy was monitored while eating the bone, the half that wasn’t eaten was not splintered. This shouldn’t have happened. My dogs are my world – I feel so guilty for causing Maddy pain when all I wanted was to give them a treat.

Hello, my name is Tina and my dog was Buddy. In July of this year I bought the exact same ham bone from Dynamic pet and gave one to each of my 3 dogs. All three got severe diarrhea and Buddy went into a coma. He spent all night in the emergency vet trying to save him and in the morning they transferred him to his regular vet and a few hours later they transferred him to The University of Georgia, Athens. He had a blockage and all organs including his brain was infected with bacteria. We had to put him to sleep. They gave him only 25% chance of surviving the next 72 hours and if he survived he would be brain damaged, kidney and liver damaged and many other things. It was horrible. I had been in contact via phone with Sarah @ Dynamic pet who told me when he was transferred to UGA to not worry about the cost of treatment that they would take care of it. I asked her to pull the product and test it but she said their product was fine. I contacted her after Buddy died and she asked for the name and phone #’s of the vets and requested the medical records. After weeks and weeks of me calling her she finally told me the case went to their insurance company. Two days ago the insurance co called and said they were denying the claim. I asked if they had a copy of the autopsy report which clearly states this was all caused by the bone, and she said no, so I faxed her a copy. She called back yesterday and left a message saying it was my responsibility to take care of my pet and that it was my decision to give my dog the bone!!! Can you believe it? I just asked that they pay the medical bills and nothing more (3500.00) and they can’t even do that. I want them to pay. I was hoping we could bring suit against them together and stop them from killing other dogs. I know there has to be more than just our dogs who died from their product. You can forward this e-mail to anybody you think needs to know and please call me anytime to discuss this. I have been dealing with this for months and I feel his death over and over every day.

I’m so glad I stumbled upon this. While I am deeply sorry that dogs have died needlessly from this horrible product, I am glad that the owners were able to warn others against it. I purchased 3 ham bones (different brand, but the label looks suspiciously similar) for my dog, my mother’s dog, and my brother’s dog as Christmas presents. Tomorrow I am going to return these in favor of a safer alternative. Thank you thank you thank you for saving me and the dogs I love potential pain and heartbreak. I am going to warn everyone I know who owns a dog about this and direct them here so that they may see the results for themselves.

  22. ashlee

oh my gosh! i gave my two dogs that bone yesterday for Christmas and today they are both so sick. They are not playing or running around. so i googled that ham bone i bought at wal-mart and found yall. im so scared its 9:00pm and we dont have an emergency vet. What should i do?

  23. lynda

  24. Richard

I gave my 15 year old choco/lab a hambone on christmas night, he ate it ! Died Jan.3,2009.
Dont ever give a dog a Hambone !
had the Vet. xray him. He had a blockage 3 inchs before the anus in the rectum. a solid hard rock of feces and bone, that after 12 hours of attempting to soften the lump he died from complications.
Ham bone when digested can mix with feces and become the equivalent to brick cement or asphalt. then it dries out and is unmovable from that point on.
Imagine what its like to have a bowel full of rock cement drying!
Call the company asking them the process of making the bones are they slightly cooked, I bet they are. then everybody go to Walmart and buy all the bones I mean everyone, then everyone go back in 2 weeks and return them. the over orders my bankrupt the bone company ! huh huh.

I just found this web site and i must say ‘i think it is great”.I just finished reading the article on the real ham bones,I had been purchasing these same bones for Lexi,my 2 yr. old Shepherd Lab mix,she loved them,i purchased one for her not long ago and she vomited for 2 days,i thought nothing of it,untill i read the article.Lexi is fine now and i still have 2 of these same bones, she will not touch them, now i know why.I was very sorry to hear about the dog dieing from the colon blockage,i could not even begin to think about losing Lexi, she is a member of the family, and knows it.

  27. Vlad

You guys scared me. My 8 year old German Shepherd dog is eating the bone while I am reading through the site. The reason I started looking on the internet for the bone info is because I wanted to buy more of them. It was a first time we bought this bone and it smells good. I’ll post more info if something happens to my dog.

  28. S. Stone

I have a German Shephard who eats this exact bone all the time and absolutly loves it and has no problems at all. I think it just depends on the dog and if their tummy can handle a change in diet. That’s probably all it is.

  29. Samantha

I would like to say I am sorry for your loss.
Thank You everyone who replied to this post. i have 2 rotti’s and a sharpei/shepherd mix. my hubby works in iraq and they are my best friends, so i always check out what is ok to give them and what is not.
I made ham and beans and they were buggin me in the kitchen for a ‘treat’ but I thought twice about it.
My babes will not be getting ham bones EVER!

  30. Kate

First my condolenses to all who have lost their beloved pets to this product. I have given this bone to our dog Duke on many occasions and sometimes he would get a little diarrhea but I thought it was because he would try to eat it all one night but last night after eating it he had the usual diarrhea and today he threw up and has had bone filled stool and he is crying and moaning trying to poop. The emergency vet office said to watch for blood in the stool and take him to his vet first thing in the morning….after reading all of this I wonder if he will see morning. He is miserable…I will post again with the outcome. I Pray to God he survives!

  31. Kate

Well, as I promised I am following up! I took the advise of a vet online and administered a tablespoon of fish oil and looked for blood in the stool and see the vet in the morning. The fish oil mixed with some chicken broth and a little bread was perfect for him and about 20 mins later he past a bunch of bone filled stool with no blood and then he was fine….very scary! I am so thankful this didn’t have a bad ending which wasn’t the case for many of these poor pets and their family members.
I will tell everyone with a dog to stay away from this product.

  32. mary

I’m so sorry to hear about your dog Trace.
Thank you for sharing your experience.
It is so valuable to have this information.
My dog Mo (Siberian Husky) loves the “real ham bone”. I would go out of my way to find them. I realized this week that Mo can not be left alone with this bone. They break down easily and Mo consumed a portion of the bone. His bowels looked like white chalk for two days and he was lethargic as his system worked it out. I was very concerned.
I’m sorry for your loss and grateful for the information you shared.
    Thank you – Take care.

  33. chris

People, this is simply a bone from a pig. Same as any other bone. It isn’t a product that is made or put together. The company does nothing other than cut the meat off, dry it out and package it.
Bones splinter and can cause problems like the ones noted above. That is the risk with any bone you give the dog. Did you think the companies that sell these can magically alter these bones so they don’t do this??
I do feel sad and offer condolences to those affected but I just find it odd that people are attacking the manufacturers and also Walmart.

  34. nichole

OMG I allmost got one today I’m glad I did not . Will NEVER feed a real bone

  35. Bea

This dog bone is DANGEROUS, I can’t
    believe the comments by Chris.

We deserve the right to trust the products we
give our animals. I work for various rescue and
foster groups in Tucson AZ, and I am the one
that was given two of these bones as a donation.

I passed them on to a Foster Mom who has 10
rescued dogs, the only 2 dogs that got gravely
ill, where the ones that got the bones…….NO,
they did not have contact with one another.

They are sick because of these bones, one has
had 2 sets of seizures, and is under the direct
    care of a Vet.

Make NO mistake about it people, we here in
Tucson believe these dog bones are DEADLY
    for your dogs.

Have some balls, make a stand, fight back,
we are trying to make a difference.

  36. Shane

Feed two of these bones to my dogs several weeks ago. My Setter had no issues, but my ACD/mutt sure did. We gave them the bones while we were doing some quik task (taking in groceries if I recall) and before we knew the bones were basically devoured. My dogs chew bones, but I hadn’t seen them eat one up completely, so quickly. Long sto0ry short, my little guy Spanky ended up ok after about two days of stomach problems and bloating, Like I told my wife, these bone type treats never worth it. We got ours on impulse at an Ace Hardware in Tucson, AZ.

Bea I agree that some form of protest/action should be taken. I agree Chris’s comments here pretty weak, these bones were crap. If you have bought normal BBQ’d type bones before for your dogs, I am sure you wouId quickly see the quality difference. I guess you get what you pay for – these were cheaper in price and quality than the bones I would buy at say, my local pet store.

We have to remember though, animals are considered property, and products produced for animals are not regulated by the fed or bound by FDA guidelines.

  37. Wendy

My dogs love the dynamic Real Ham Bones! They will not eat the smoked product by other companies- the ugly dried bones. I have bought hundreds, maybe thousands, of these ham bones and never had an issue. Maybe you all are talking about different products…a real bone is a real bone after all.

  38. Lisa

I’m so sorry for your loss. I too thought that the products that you could purchase at places like Petco and Petsmart must be safe for my dog or they wouldn’t sell it there right? WRONG!! I had given my service dog a bone like this purchased from Petco and within 24 hours he was whining and acting very uncomfortable and a few hours later he couldn’t sit down, or move his tail without screaming in pain. This is a 113 lb. Rott/Pit mix and he’s a tough dog…to hear him screaming in pain like that broke my heart. We rushed him to the emergency hospital and they did x-rays and gave him enimas and said that he was in so much pain because he was passing bone fragments through his intestines and the fragments were tearing his insides up on the way out. $400.00 and 6 hours at the hospital, thank God he made it, but it took 3 days to pass all of it and he cried so much and just looked at me and I felt so helpless and so much guilt for giving him the bone that caused this. People…PLEASE do not give your dogs real bones of ANY kind. It can kill them.

  39. Kimberly

I am so sorry for your loss..thank you for passing this on..I have 4 dogs myself and they are like my children…God bless..and I hope no one else will have to suffer what you have went through.

    Kimberly

  40. Sue

I’m am so sorry for your loss. I am the foster mom that Bea refers to and feel very lucky that my two babies survived. Without knowing, I gave them each a bone on 3/17/09 and by the following day I had two very sick dogs. They vomited and had diarrhea. On the second day one of the dogs had a seizure in the morning and was rushed to the vet. That evening he had a second seizure. In memory of Trace and others that have died or gotten severely ill please know that the fight is not over. Please tell everyone you know how horrible this product is.

  41. Karan

this same bone killed my son’s puppy, it got sick, and died within 48 hours.

  42. Tammy

I have bought plenty of these bones. I have a rottie and he eats one a day for past year and has never had any problems with them. He will not eat the smoked bones with the dried meat on them. I just wanted to let people know that all dogs do not get sick from the bones. He is perfectly healthy at 110 pounds and perfect size for him. I am sorry for the other people who have lost their pets and for those babies it made sick but, xavier is doing great and looks forward to his bone treat everyday

  43. Kristen

I gave my Siberian Husky one of these bones to occupy her in her crate, and sure enough, I come home to a crate FILLED with liquidy diarrhea with bone fragments all in it! I was suspicious of the bone in the first place and asked the Petco employees if it was okay to give to a dog, and they said it should be fine. Never again will I trust a minimum wage worker advice when it comes to my dog’s health..

Do NOT give this product to your dog, it’s horrible for their system!

  44. Donna Rohrich

Hi everyone, I’d just like to let you in on some new facts regarding “The Real Ham bone” by Dynamic Pet Products. I just read from Denieses’ website that now there are confirmed 6 deaths and 21 injuries from this bone. One of the injuries was by Baily, a 10 yr. old American Cocker Spaniel. I just got my denial letter from America First Insurance company. That’s where a Ms. Sara Mades sends the vet bills that we submit to her. It’s a form letter, only difference is name and case number. Ok, enough is enough, from now on we must make it our life long mission to get every company, retail store or pet shoppe not to carry this product. It’s to the point that I’m ready to file a Class Action case against Dynamic Pet Products/Frick Quality Meats. That is where Sara Mades gets the bones from. It’s her families meat packing plant in Washington Missouri. They need to be held responsible for marketing a bad bunch bones. And remember her people the key word here is FRAGMENTS, not splintering, as their lable refers to. I don’t know of one person who said that there were splinters found in their dogs vomit, but we sure saw a lot of bone FRAGMENTS.We need to find a lawyer who will take on this as a Class Action Suit. God Bless all of us and justice to all

  45. Linda

My rottweiler puppy loves these bones and the beef bones too. maybe you’re not all talking about the same bones or brands. My dogs love them and have never had trouble.

  46. Janet T.

My dogs go every other week with me to the store to get their Dynamic Pet Ham Bones. They love them and get so excited when we go!

  47. Adrienne

I foster bull breed rescue dogs. I give them Dynamic Ham and Beef Bones for the bigger dogs and they love to chew on them and they last a long time. They’re only meant to be chewed on, not eaten so maybe you’re giving to small of a bone for your breed. Maybe a big beef bone or cow femur is better for your breed of dog. None of my foster dogs have ever had issues.

  48. Erica

I gave my 8 month old pit mix this bone 2 days ago. She seemed to love it she chewed on it for over an hour. By evening she was vomiting and she started with the diarrhea. I could tell something was really wrong with her she whined alot and just laid around the house. She hasn’t been eating like she normally does and she just hasn’t been herself. My husband is home with her today and he said she seems more like herself and she ate her breakfast today so things are looking better! I feel so bad for the families that lost their pets. Sasha is my life and I don’t know what i would do if i lost her! One thing i know for sure is that she will never get another bone EVER!!

I wish I would have found this earlier. Boomer is our 13 month old Goldendoodle. He finished the bone and the very next day began drinking tons, peeing often, and now has vomited several times. It is now 10:45 at night and he is salivating at the mouth and lethargic. I don’t think he is going to make it. My 4 children are sleeping and I can’t believe what I am going to have to tell them in the morning. I am so disgusted at the “Real Ham Bone” Dynamic company for this. What can I do???

  50. Edd

I have good news. Boomer has pulled through. I did not think it was going to happen. Starting the next morning my vet put him on a blan diet of white rice and brown venison burger. He ate that for three days before ever having a bowel movement. Finally, Sunday night he passed the remaining bone particles. I am so glad he pulled through. I’m sorry for those who were not as fortunate. I will continue to spread the word about how horrible this bone can be!

I feel for your loss. Recently back in March 2009 bought one of these Ham Bones for my two dogs. Well, the next night, one dog of mine only 6 years old started acting strange vomiting , later she went outside struggling to go. I was up just about every hour on the hour trying to make sure she was “ok.” I figured she would be ok until the morning , I had an a appointment at the vets for a well check. I left her out at 3:30am and I awoke around 6:50am to check on her and she was dead. I am thankful one of my dogs are still alive but I will be very cautious now at what kind of dog treats i will be purchasing for my pet from now on. Any one who hasn’t bought this bone from Wal Mart by Dynamo dog treats please do not buy. It is very dangerous to dogs. If your dog is having symptoms like mine please do not wait like I did bring them to a vet immediately. I miss her so much. Thank You

I gave my lurcher and my jack russell terrier one of these real ham bones each last night. They are both usually very healthy and never pee in the house. I have woken up this morning and there at least 7 puddles of pee pee all over the house and the water bowls were empty. I suspect there must be a very high salt content in these bones and after reading this I am worried because my lurcher managed to eat half the bone. I will give them 24 hours to see how things go but I definitely won’t be buying these bones again. Sorry to hear about all these terrible losses.

My boyfriend gave our Boston Terrier, Odie, one of these bones Wednesday night. Thursday morning we woke to piles of vomit everywhere. We thought his stomach was just upset from the bone so we both went to work, only to find that he had drank all of his water & vomited that up all over the house while we were gone.

I took him to the emergency vet where they showed me x-rays of a huge section of his small intestine swollen & blocked. He went in for emergency surgery where they removed, from his small intestine, 3 inches of cartilage & bonge fragments that had been compacted to the consistency of concrete.

Odie is still in the hospital recovering (it is now Saturday), and I am praying that he makes it. We will have about $1,200 in vet bills now, too. Please, don’t take the risk, just refrain from giving these to your dogs if you love them.

I bought one of these ham bones yesterday for my dog Buddy. SInce, eating this he has been throwing up and when he has a bowel movement he yelps. It looks like bone in his stool and his vomit. I hope he is ok. What should be done?

I am so sorry to all of you that have had to go through this. We were very lucky to only have had an ER bill. we were greatful to have a dog to take home. I won’t go into my story because it’s the same as everyone elses. My pup had a hard start in life, and we have worked at providing him a loving home. He has come along way in trusting us and feeling safe. He should have never gone through the pain that he did because of Dynamic dog products. I am spreading the word far and wide about The Real Hambone. This product needs to be pulled.

  56. brian

There is another product called Butcher’s Bones mad by S&S Products,Inc in Tulsa,Ok same type of bone that had stolen my husky’s life. I found out about these products way too late lets do our best and tell everyone to spread the issue about this treat especialy if we can’t fight to pull any harmful products off the shelf to save a loved ones. Rest in peace my little angel -Noel you will always be remembered I’m sorry for your pain

I am soo sorry for the loss of your beloved dog. I live in your area and use DR Sanchez on MLK in Seffner My Grandaughter in ST PETE is a VET also . The FDA nor USDA does Not regulate pet treats. Am very involved with animal Legal Tort Law and protection. Have taken steps for regulations presented to Congress to pass a Mandanatory regulating Bill. This
takes time but have had several Bills passed before. God Bless, Bobbie.

I have gotten to the point where I trust no product for my animals UNLESS I make it myself. My dogs NEVER get manufactured bones as treats. You just never know about quality control in these things. One batch could be just fine and the next could be a grenade in a dog’s intestines.

Best test for a doggie treat is if it is a cookie, I try it myself. Never, in any case, would I give my dogs a ham bone either artificial or the real thing.

I too feel anger that dogs (and other animals) are considered possessions as are inanimate objects.

Of course, women still are considered so in many countries (and in some places in our own.)

It’s really tough to protect and defend all our four legged companions. I even have people come up and smack my service dog in the supermarket.

These days we have to be as fanatic in protecting our animals’ food supply as we must protect the safety of our own.

Until law is on our side. . .

Yesterday afternoonWe gave our 4 year old miniture Doberman the butchers bones hickory smoked and fully cooked ham bone which is from s&s products in Tulsa, ok! She started hacking about an hour after she stopes chewing on the bone, we didn’t think anything of that since she does that occasionally, we went to bed and she was very restless and kept moving around then in the middle of the night i heard her hacking and then vomit! Then when we got up this morning there were 3 piles of vomit around the house and a puddle of pee and pile of poop(she NEVER potties in the house) ( my husband says the poop was just her normal sort, no diarreah or fragments that he saw) then for the rest of the day she has been vomitting repetedly and shaking!! She hasnt pooped again or tried to poop that I have seen yet! I am so scared she is going to die now after reading these comments and the article! It’s midnight now and she hasn’t vomitted since probably about 4 or 5 pm, so I’m hoping she will be fine but if she vomits once more were going straight to the er vet!! This is horrible that this was something I bought in a store (food 4 less, Springfield, mo) that has caused her so much trouble!! I feel so guilty!!she is everything to us and I don’t know what we’ll do if she doesn’t get better!!! We can’t even really afford a vet bill!:(

I gave my dog Jordan the ham bone from s&s products,Tulsa Oklahoma-as a christmas present and experienced the same problems of constant vomiting and bloody diarrhea after ingesting about 1/2 the ham bone. After finding this site,I am Horrified knowing she could die from this “gift”! I’m still watching and waiting……we as animal lovers Need to get these Pet products off the store shelves! I will never give ANY dog another bone of any kind from any pet products supply…they don’t care if your beloved pet dies….as long as they get their $$$$$

We just had an $824 vet bill due to our Golden Retriever eating one of the ham bones from Petco. He’s only 9 months old, so he’s young and strong and will most likely be fine. Two days ago, my son took him out to do his business, and he was whimpering and straining & passed some really nasty bloody diarrhea. He also started vomiting shortly afterward. My 10 year old son, who got this dog as a birhday gift, was hysterical and afraid his dog was dying. My wife, who is a medical doctor, was very concerned and insistedt that we get him to the vet immediately. She was right! We took him to the vet right away & they gave him I.V. fluids and meds, took x-rays, took rectal swabs, etc. After the rectal swab, he had a major blowout in their office and passed several fairly large shards of bone and was bleeding from his rectum. The doc couldn’t see any more blockages on the x-ray, so he thinks his chances of recovery are very good. The vet thinks it is colitis caused by this bone. The vet thinks he will be fine, but the poor boy is now on a very restricted diet and has to stay pretty relaxed for a few days. Anyway, everyone STAY AWAY FROM THESE BONES!!! They shouldn’t even be allowed to sell these things if this many people are having these terrible experiences.

I gave our 20 month doberman pinscher one last week and he had horrible diarrhea a day later. We have given him bones in the past with no problem. We bought this brand at Sams… We thought he might have eaten something in our yard. Well my husband gave him a second one this week and the horrible diarrhea returned. I will NEVER give him bones like that again.

I also bought the real ham bone by dynamic pet company, and my dog got deathly sick. She got small spilnters in her intestines and had to have surgey, thank God she made it , but it was touch and go. This happened so fast and it doesnt take long, my dog only had the bone for maybe ten minutes, the minute I saw it break I took it away from her, but the damage was already done.I notified the better buisness bureau, and am working with,Bill Smith at 314 584 6727, and I have talked to the fda and their number is 313 393 8189, so I suggest, anyone who has had a problem, call them because if they get enough complaints ,they will do something about it. This is a terriable death product, and unless we speak up for our dogs, alot of pet owners are gonna go through the same horriable ordeal that we went through.

  65. Tina B.

I have 10 Siberian Husky’s and they’ve all eaten the Real Ham Bones and absolutely love them! Maybe it’s just problems with some dogs and not all of them. My family of dogs have had a very positive experience.

  66. Christina Newman

As everyone has read, We lost our Buddy in July of 2008 after eating the real ham bone from Dynamic pet. I also am working with Bill Smith at the BBB. please e-mail me @ momluvmeg2@msn.com if you or a loved one has had a problem with “The Real Ham Bone”. I would like to start a class action lawsuit and get this product banned.

  67. Kim and Pepper

I wish I would have read this before I bought and gave my dog one of those bones this morning. she ate half the bone its not only wallmart selling them, I bought it a pet supplies plus on 13 mile and harper in Michigan. You really must check everything you give your dogs, because distributors don’t give a damm…..

  68. Matthew McLean

I thought you would all like to know this is finally being investigated by the FDA. Hopefully this will help put a stop to sales of this product.

FDA to investigate complaints about dog treat.
The AP (3/12) reports, “The Food and Drug Administration is looking into concerns that a Missouri-produced pet treat has caused serious illness or death in dogs. An FDA spokesman said Thursday the government is reviewing complaints about Real Ham Bone For Dogs and, if warranted, will take appropriate action and notify the public.” The agency is encouraging “consumers to report their concerns.” Notably, the “pet treat is sold throughout the US and distributed under the Dynamic Pet Products label of Frick’s Quality Meats in Washington, MO.”

  69. scott

I think you didn’t watch your dogs when they were eating these. All my dogs love these treats. I think everyone is looking for a quick buck.

  70. Matthew McLean

Scott, with all due respect, there are now reports numbering in the hundreds of dogs who have died from these bones. Many of the reports were cases where the dog only had the bone for 10-15 minutes. A “quick buck” as you put it isn’t enough to make up for the loss of a dog, especially in a country where our pets are members of the family. If you make the choice to continue exposing your pets to a product that has a higher likelihood of killing your pet, then that is your prerogative. I just hope for your pet’s sake, you’re giving it to him for the right reasons, and not to prove that you’re not one of the bottomfeeders out there looking for a payout. “One man came home to find his dog dead, bleeding from the mouth.” I’m sure you would be thrilled if you were that man, and that was your dog.

  71. Christina Newman

    This is to Scott,
My dog Buddy died from a “treat” that is supposed to be safe. Tell my 10 year old son, who was Buddys best friend, that his dog was died so Mommy could make a quick buck. You are an a**!
I kept asking Dynamic Pet Products to test the bone that killed him and they said their product was fine. Not, we will look into it, we will test it, nothing. I was not asking for anything more than the vet bills paid by the company that made the product, after they said they would pay the vet bills! I want a better warning on the label. The dogs were watched while eating these. The eating of them was easy. The digesting and passing of them was where the dogs are having problems and dying.

  72. kim

How are dog owners to know if the product is unsafe for there pet ?
It should have been tested by the manufacturer to be safe before being allowed to be put on the store shelf for pet lovers to buy for there family members.
I hope the FDA and BBB can do something to stop this.

  73. Jack

My dog was hurt by a ham bone called Butchers Bones any one else have the same problem
