Food Safety Warning
Horst Hoefinger

I want to thank My Little Demon’s mom for sending in this information.

This morning I opened a box of Milkbone- Gravy Bones (for Small & Medium dogs) with an expiration date of 9-17-09 and a Bar code (bottom of box) 79100 94203 and a box (For Large dogs) with expiration date 25 Sep 08 with Bar code 13120 04204 and in the boxes along with the dog cookies was WORMS about the size of rice and the same color. I contacted the company to inform them of this. If you use this product- please check your box by dumping them out on a table before you give any to your dog.

Unfortunately, that sort of thing can happen. Something like that could have happened just about anywhere down the line. Insects can and do get into foodstuffs.

One suggestion for the future, which is what we do with any kind of flour we bring home — stick it in the freezer for 24 hours. Pretty much guaranteed to kill of any eggs that might hatch and any bugs that might be looking to multiply.

Still, I know it’s really yucky to find buggies in your treats (sounds like a some kind of larvae or something).

Anything containing grain is attractive to grain moths or Indian Meal moths. You can see them here along with a picture of the caterpillars, which look like works, at http://www.ipm.iastate.edu/ipm/iiin/mindianm.html

They can be found in both pet and human foods. They don’t usually come from the manufacturer, but somewhere along the line were stored in an area that was infested. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell if a package is infested, but watch for moths at any stores you are buying food.

I had the same problem!!! They are called indian meal moths, I bought a box of Milkbones in March, never thinking anything of it I put them in a cabinet, went to give the dog a treat the next day, and I found a webbing in the box!!! I threw out the box. Next thing I know I had larvae on my ceiling in my kitchen. Next came the moths. They got in to all my grain food, had to throw all my food away. Now 7 months later , I still see them. I can not put food in my cabinets Everything is kept in the refrigerator or freezer. I called an exterminator but he said they are very tough to get rid off, sometime it takes 18 months!!! These bugs come from warehouses where the product is stored!!! I have used pheromone traps, they are helping but not as much as I want them to. I have 23 cabinets that I can use!!!!

    CORRECTION!!!!Sorry, I meant 23 cabinets that I can’t use !!!

I had the same thing happen with a box of Iam’s Weight Control Biscuits3 weeks ago. I am now infested with the Meal Moths. I called the IAMS corporation. At first they offered me a replacement box of biscuits. I told them I’d rather have them send an exterminator to my house. The issue has been esculated to the Manager and I am waiting for them to get back to me with a resolution.

I still have them, 9 months and counting!!!!!!!!!!!!!gross!!!!!!!!!!!
