Chocolate Comes Home
Here’s a story that makes me feel all warm inside. It’s the release of Chocolate from the Meadow Hills Veterinary Center.
If you’re not familiar with the story, Chocolate was a stray on the streets of Pasco, WA where he had sustained two broken front legs.
When Sonia Ayala of Pasco first picked him up, his legs flopped around like broken toothpicks. He stayed in a kennel in her backyard on those cold January days, lying on his belly to keep the weight off his limbs.
He sustained the breaks several months earlier and walked on them untreated while he was a stray north of Pasco. At the time, it wasn’t clear whether any fate other than euthanasia would benefit him.
After Ayala told the [TriCity] Herald how she couldn’t find anyone to help him, the public stepped up to help, donating blankets, collars and toys, offering to adopt him and raising almost $30,000 to pay for his veterinary costs.
He’s now completed his rehab and awaits adoption from one of three families waiting in queue. Go to the TriCity Herald site for links to a nice gallery of photos as well as a video of Chocolate in action.
What makes this story even better is the support Chocolate received from our very own Dogster.com community. On his ride back from rehab, in a limo, Chocolate lay on a quilted blanket donated by the Dawgs Just Wanna Have Fun group. In addition a basketful of fun stuff was also donated by the team. Just wonderful stuff, folks!!

I do want to give a special bark out to Mary Ann Showalter and Barbara Lambert (the quilter) for helping to organize these efforts and make Chocolate’s life that much better. Butch and Flecken, if you’re reading this, you are very lucky to have them as owners.
Woof, woof!!

We have been following Chocolate’s story in DJWHF from the beginning, when Butch brought it to our attention. We were thrilled to be part of his cheering section, as Butch and mom Mary Ann kept us up to date on Chocolate’s progress. Flecken’s mom, Barbara, deserves many thanks for her generosity, and her willingness to spend long hours working on quilts that she frequently donates to deserving projects. I’m proud to be a member of this wonderful, caring, fun-loving group! Welcome home, Chocolate–may you finally have the family and life that you deserve!!!

We too are proud members of Dawgs Just Wanna Have Fun. Chocolate’s story broke our hearts and then lifted our spirits as we followed his story. It renewed our faith in a time when there are so few happy endings. Barbara & her beautiful quilts, Butch & Mary Ann for the updates and the delivery, Kiko, Josie & Mom for suggesting we try to lift Chocolate’s spirits…..thank you ever so much. That basket was filled with more than goodies…it was filled with love and hope for a dog we never met, who owned nothing in this world but a yellow ball. Chocolate now carries a bit of all of us with him. Happy Trails sweet Chocolate. Fundawgs….we love you..each and everyone.

Chocolate has traveled a long and difficult journey, and we are so grateful that the wonderful people at the WSU Veterinary Med. School were able to make his life better through their care. We hope that our furends who are able will remember to make a donation to the school so they can continue this much-needed work.

Even a small donation will help pets with medical needs.

We too are amongst the proud woofers to be a part of this wonderful group!! This group has over the years shown us that there is still much love, honour and decency left in this world of hours … Time after time they continiously never fail to surprise us in all the goodness they do, the happiness they bring to others and most of all the support they show at someones time of need …. I am honoured to know each and everyone of them and constantly count my blessings that each one of them are a part of my life ….
Chocolates story has touched many afar, we cried to see the outcome of his so far tragic life and know that what the future brings is a furever home with much love … go chocolate and enjoy life as it was meant to be xx
God Bless you little Chocolate Buddy.
You guys rock for doing such a wonderful thing for him! We’ve been following Chocolate’s story right from the beginning too and donated at the start for his surgeries. If we’d known that you wonderful doggies were doing something so special in your group we would have loved to have contributed for all that we’re on the other side of the world! Way to go!!! And now we can all cheer this wonderful doggie (and his famous yellow ball) on to his Furever Home!!!!
Way to go Chocolate!!
What a beautiful and touching story. When people ask me why do I love Dogster… it is because of stories like this. Strangers banding together for the betterment of dogs.
God Bless all those who helped.
