Magna Come Laude – Retriever Gets Degree
Horst Hoefinger

As dog owners we all know our fuzzy pals are smarter than the average bear. Now a golden retriever has upped the ante for all our loved ones by receiving a bachelor’s degree.

Ada, Ohio (AP) - A well-trained golden retriever will receive a bachelor’s degree from Ohio Northern University today along with the rest of the graduating class.

Zeeke, a 1-year-old dog, will earn his bachelor’s of science degree in canine companionship. The canine has spent thousands of hours training as a Canine Companion dog as part of a senior’s honors project.

This makes me wonder how my three treat seeking machines would fare in higher education.  Let’s take Bo, my chow-retriever mix, first.  He’s stubborn, aloof and likes to do things his way.  With his attitude my guess is that he wouldn’t make it out of high school, most likely kicked out in 10th grade for smoking in the boys room.

Copper, my ridgeless Rhodesian ridgeback rescue, is sweet as could be. She follows the rules and is of above average intelligence. As long as she didn’t fall in with the wrong crowd, for she’s easily influenced, I could see her getting an associates degree in animal husbandry.

Logan, our Bernese Mountain Dog rescue, is a wild card.  He’s cute and brilliant but scared of the world. If he can learn to trust humans, a bachelor’s degree and, dare I say it, world peace may well be within reach.

That’s my humble analysis of the dogs that run my house.

Let me hear about your loved ones and how far you think they can go in the world of higher education.

7 Woofs

  1. Kiko

Mama says I might do well in clown school–except I am afraid of things that squeak!! No honking horns for this clown!! BOL!!

  2. Milo

Milo would be some athlete who would pass on his charisma ;-) Magpie would be expelled for bullying and Chachi would be the book worm gaining national recognition to his university for making some brilliant discovery.

  3. Sonya

Cute and brilliant but scared…that’s my pup. She’s a rescue and has problems with some other people, but she’s learning over time that people who come to the house are NOT there to steal her away, poor girl. In school she’d be the shy one…maybe the Ally Sheedy character in Breakfast Club. :)

  4. Horst Hoefinger

Sonya…I love that reference to the Breakfast Club. We might have to do a poll in the future as to who we think our pups would have been cast as.

And Milo…Chachi as a bookworm? Sounds more like Milo and Chachi got their names mixed up : )

Kiko…word of warning, clowns are not funny. They are very, very scary.

  5. Maddy and Precious

Maddy would be the college student who sits in the front row challenging every word the professor says. Precious on the other hand would probably be expelled for being too promiscuous! That girl can NOT stop kissing random people. BOL

  6. Val, Mozart, Gracie, Wolfie & Louie

    Mom says:
Gracie is very smart but her “Hyde” (chow) side says she does things on her own terms & most of the time not at all. Her “Jekyll” (collie) side says she’s very sweet. So .. high school droup out with a GED.
Mozart is very smart & willing to learn but only for the treaties keep coming. He might wind up with a behavioral science degree as long as his meal ticket doesn’t run out.
Wolfgang is very smart but quite the “loose cannon” & it’s tough getting his focus. Perhaps a droup out & in a gang?

  7. Barleyblogger

This is excellent news! I am a 2-year old golden doodle with a blog (Barley’s blog), and I think it’s high time dogs get recognized for their achievements. Funny anecdote: if you Google my website, The Dog Vote, the second story that comes up is titled “WA Woman Registers Her Dog to Vote”. He never was allowed to vote. But they’re out there trying!
