Keep Your Dog Cool in the Heat
Angela Moore

This video features some practical, simple ways to keep your pet from getting overheated. A new one to me—and a great idea—is rubbing aloe vera gel or Vitamin E oil on a dog’s foot pads before hitting the hot pavement. And chicken broth ice cubes = genius!

Dr. Eric Barchas, our resident vet, also has some great suggestions over at the Vet Blog.

  1. Kenyon's mom

Since Hope is semi-feral and in training to be a pet, it is a necessity to keep her outside in her kennel in all kinds of weather until she is tame enough to bring inside. We added a pitched roof to the kennel top and sunscreen fabric on the sides to keep the sun from shining directly on her. She is also shaded by the side of our house and oak trees.

Hope didn’t like the plastic kiddie pool we put in her kennel so now I soak a couple of towels in cold water every morning and lay them on the floor of her kennel. She lays on them during the day. We put Pedialyte ice cubes in her water and she gets a Frosty Paws treat every afternoon. On days when it is particularly hot, we take a large fan outside and let it blow into the kennel. We spray Hope, the entire kennel and the cedar chip flooring with the garden hose. So far so good. Diligence is important.

    Kool Kennel® Now Available

Kool Kennel LLC of Tewksbury, Ma. (www.koolkennel.com) announces Kool Kennel® is now available to help cool and warm your pets.

Kool Kennel is a patent pending thermoelectric device that is easily attached to your cat or dog’s crate and provides 10 degree F cooler air than ambient from the cool air exit and 20 degree F warmer air than ambient from the warm air exit.

Powered by electricity from your vehicle cigarette lighter outlet, 12 volt battery or your home outlet (in conjunction with a power converter); Kool Kennel is environmentally friendly with no chemicals. Also, it reduces the need to maintain high air conditioning/heating limits for animal comfort. Lastly, white noise from the fan is soothing to your pets.
