PetSmart Sells Expired Pet Products
Have you ever shopped the bargain bins at PetSmart? I have. But one blogger has found some expired pproducts in those bins.
The Blue and Green BLUEgreen blog has photos on this post showing the expiration date on a bargain bin item that should have been tossed out, not into a sale bin. Here’s what the blog has to say:
I recently visited a local Petsmart today and the little “manager’s bargin bin” caught my eye. Looking around at several items, my eye came across treats that I thought I might buy. I was looking at the back and what do I notice, but that the treats were expired!

Unfortunately this isn’t a new problem. I seem to recall several years ago Petco being busted selling expired premium pet food on the regular shelves. It’s imperative that you look at the expiration dates on anything you buy your furbabies no matter where it comes from.
Nothing amazes me with this company anymore. They also were selling tennis balls that had led levels that were even toxic for dogs, until they got “enough” complaints (one complaint of a sick or dead pet should be enough!) They also continue to sell Nutro, which has also been making itself ‘famous’ lately for making dogs sick. I will never shop at any Petsmart.
I actually had incorrect facts here, I visited a Petco, not a Petsmart! sorry!
Wait, I bought expired food which was “on sale” right off the shelf. It was not in a bargain bin, it was not in a separate area. I just happened to buy a bag which was normally $18.99, and it was on sale for $4.00. Needless to say my 7 week old pups were vomiting and had diarreah (sic) for about 18 hours. This was after feeding them only once. I immediately looked at the bag and realized that the food was expired, brought it back. They gave me my money back, I told them to take it off the shelf. I bet it is in the clearance section now. And yes, this was a Petco in Brooklyn (Utica) on Sept. 7, 2008. You would think with all the pet food issues in the last few years, they would be more professional.
I work for large pet retail stores, we try our best to find all of the expired products, but there are an awful lot of shelves and bags and boxes to check. Food that goes on sale or clearance is often due to an approaching due date. If that expiration dates passes, most foods are able to remain good for a few months longer. It’s up to you to decide, when buying clearance foods, if this is something you want to risk. If your dog has a sensitive stomach, it’s probably not a good idea. If your dog can eat rocks and no issue… it probably won’t phase him. It’s our responsibility to check dates, and if our dogs respond poorly to the product, it’s guaranteed… so take it back. As for toy products or food products that just make animals sick we are relying on our manufacturers to make quality products, and the manufactures are relying on their ingredients distribute to produce quality and safe products. Nutro never wanted to kill people’s pets, they produce a product designed to help peoples pets… but the greedy Chinese gluten makers put artificial sources of “protein” in the ingredient… just as they did for human baby formula. There are alot of greedy companies out there, and in a global economy we all rely on one another to be honest about the product we all purchase. It’s never just one person’s fault, or one companies fault. It’s an unfortunate truth.
PS. I take home the pet food we throw away because of approaching expiration dates, and my pets are incredibly healthy. But I get bags of $70 food for free. My 6 year old dog still looks and behaves like a puppy, and my 4 year old is also in incredible health. You just have to use the clearance product quickly… unless your pet is sensitive to it.
