Prisons go to the dogs

RETIRED greyhounds are getting a second chance at life - in prison. More than 20 racing dogs, who would otherwise have been put down, have been rehabilitated as domestic pets at Dhurringile prison, near Murchison.

Woman alleges Saskatchewan town killed her dogs because she was on welfare
REGINA — When she was separated from her husband, lost custody of her two sons and was forced to go on welfare, Jacqueline Nash found comfort in her dogs.
The purebred German shepherds got her through the rough times, the Saskatchewan woman said. They were her companions and her protectors.

Hundreds of prehistoric dogs found buried throughout the southwestern United States show that canines played a key role in the spiritual beliefs of ancient Americans, new research suggests.
Throughout the region, dogs have been found buried with jewelry, alongside adults and children, carefully stacked in groups, or in positions that relate to important structures, said Dody Fugate, an assistant curator at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Starving dog exhibit reported as a hoax
The story of a dog being starved to death as part of an art exhibition appears to have been falsely reported by Costa Rican newspaper The Nation, according to new sources. I reported the appalling story here last week among global outrage about the exhibit and a reported invitation to repeat the work elsewhere.
