British Rhodesian Ridgeback Breed Club Calls for Killing Healthy Ridgeless Puppies
How sad is this? I understand breeding to a standard but there is no reason not to place puppies who do not meet the standard with loving homes where the puppies can be neutered and live out their natural lives as pets.

If a Rhodesian Ridgeback who is ‘ridgeless’ is mated to a dog or bitch who is also without the ridge, how do you think the puppies will turn out?
A) Half will have ridges and half won’t
B) Some will have ridges but most won’t
C) The males will have ridges but the females won’t
D) None will have ridges and so all the puppies should be killedAdmit it. You are hoping that D) is a sick joke, aren’t you?

As breeds go, the Rhodesian Ridgeback is one of the healthiest. A life expectancy of some 14 years and a breed which is still a functional, physically impressive dog.The breed is so synonymous by the ridge of hairs which run up in the opposite direction of the middle of the dog’s back, the dog even earned its name in recognition of this unusual physical trait.
In many ways it would be like naming a Basenji an ‘African Bark-less’ or a Chow Chow a ‘Chinese Purple Tongue’ such is the importance given to the ridge in this incredible breed, a breed which is famous for its ability to hunt lions.
This unique ridge is not ‘required’ for the dog to be healthy. It is purely aesthetic. It almost goes without saying though that a ridgeless Rhodesian Ridgeback is undesirable in terms of adherence to the breed standard, but that’s fine. Lots of dogs, thousands in fact, live happy, healthy fulfilling lives as companions who aren’t even CLOSE to meeting a breed standard.
So the question is, why should a healthy dog be killed because it is aesthetically not compatible with a description and set of figures and numbers on a breed standard? And moreover, who is suggesting this arbitrary execution of perfectly healthy dogs?

Selective breeding and killing? OMD, what are these humans thinking? They can’t seriously expect to be balanced human beings if they are able to carry out these actions with no remorse and chalk it up to “business”. This is disgusting, outrageous and INHUMANE!
This is absolutely heartbreaking and incredibly cruel.
Isn’t it ironic how elitism spawns acts which are morally reprehensible? A belief that you’re better than everyone else never leads to anything wholesome… ever.
A ridgeless Ridgeback wouldn’t be a good candidate for breeding, but it would make an excellent pet. That is like killing a Shetland Sheepdog because it is over or under sized (over “16 or under 13″ disqualifies a Sheltie from the show ring). What a stupid rule!!!!!
What if people start killing their kids because the kid’s eyes are too close together or something?
Selective breeding is okay (it’s what got us the different dog breeds), but killing dog that happens to not be perfect is BS! Actually, no dog fits their breed standard perfectly.
That is just terrible. The only thing that makes them different from other ridgeback is that they dont have a ridge. They could still be great family pets, they should not be killed.
How about if we kill all children who do not have blue eyes and blonde hair– sound familiar?? Celebrate differences, do not supress them–these pups would make wonderful companions even if they are not show ring perfect– this is despicable thinking!
I started the “other” ridgeback dog called the MAH THAI LUNG AHN from Thailand off in America in march of 1994.
I have had only about 4 ridgeless pups out of over 350 TRD that I am currently registered in my ATRA group see that group at http://www.ThaiDog.org and the forum info at http://www.ThaiRidgebackDog.com. I do undertand the way of think of these loser Brits as they are cut of that sort of material.. you must understand that old schoot.. They also put down the DSC pups as well. Read all about a DSC (DERMOID SINUS CYST) at any RR site or at my sites. “They want a pure bred dog and no impurrfections!!”
As Sargent Major Plumly (made famous in the movie “WE WERE SOLDIERS” played by Sam Shepherd) would have said.. Those RR breeders are PUSSIES!!

PS.. I am TOTALLY against putting down any puppy or dog and that is why I have 99 TRD to find good homes for.. I have 30 TRD for free and 30 pups for great prices. And NOT one of my TRD are ever put down due to a DSC or being ridgeless.. i totally agree with the Sargent Major…

this sort of practice in this day and age should be called what it is …. abuse & cruelty. as the owner of a white boxer i was recently informed that the practice of killing the “white pups” still goes on with some breeders. i believe any breeders continuing with this type of breed selection should be charged with animal cruelty.
When I was a kid, we adopted a red Doberman who was to be put down because he was not “show” quality! He had a little bit of a mane down his neck and was a bit bowlegged. The owners brought him to the vet and told them to put him down and why. He knew my Dad was looking for a Doberman, so we adopted Dobe…he was the most kind, gentle and protective dog…we ended up having to go overseas for my Dad to work and we found Dobe a great home where he had miles to run! There’s no reason to put a healthy dog down just because it won’t win any “awards”!

He’s been booted by the AKC-FSS (for his practices, and not wanting the breed to be AKC recognized) for fear that the AKC will change the breed (or could it be because they keep pedigrees?)
Yet sterling sells breeding pairs (some male pups are cryptorchid- having one testicle and shipped at four months old) or they’re sold w/dermoids in their necks (yet he swears that there weren’t any). He’ll sell or “give” anyone a dog… responsible, ethical breeders won’t sell or give away their dog to anyone just because they have money, yet puppymills like sterling will.
He lies so much he’s not sure how to tell the truth anymore… sometimes, in cases where dogs have to be taken from such puppy mills as sterling (mind you that’s why he’s in Thailand, because he’s been chased from state to state in the US for cruelty for years), the best thing for them since they’ve been caged all of their lives, or mentally abuse (and even physically) the best thing is to put an animal out of it’s misery; but don’t be fooled by this “famous” person. He’s making his fame at the expoitment of this Royal dog of Thailand!

This comment is in honor of my ridgeless Rhodesian Ridgeback, named Kelley (her full name is listed as my name). She lived to the ripe age of 14 1/2 before she passed away on Veteran’s Day in November of 2007. She was dumped by a breeder who wasn’t supposed to have bred her two dogs (they were sold on limitted registration papers) meaning they were not to be bred; but like many she wanted to make her money back on a litter. Kelley was three months old when I got her, at three years old I trained her to be a Search and Recovery Dog (we specialized in Cadaver Recovery)… she worked until she was 11 years old, and she still didn’t want to retire. She is still sorely missed, as for the ridge, I would have another ridgeless Rhodie in a heartbeat….
As for readers who do not know, the breed also pops up occassionally in black and tan, blue, and on occasions blue w/tan points… most “breeders” also cull them as well.
I believe they should be spayed/neutered and place in loving forever homes… I will never get over the loss of Kelley, and I know that together we added closure to many victims families.

We have a beautiful and loving tri colour or black and tan RR and most people who meet him say how much more handsome he looks because of his colouring. The idea that a healthy dog should be culled (murdered) for not meeting a standard imposed by a select group of people is comparable to ethnic cleansing.
It is a tradgidy that this killing happens, but it happens with species that are being bred for the show ring.
Though I dont see what defaming a breeder about his other ridgebacks has to do with a a ridgless RR
I have since found his site and from what I can see his dogs look a picture of health. This really sounds like a pack of kids bitching and moaning, seriously seems that Jack is prepared to talk.. why dont you contact each other like adults.. defamation of character is really a crime and if Jacks dogs are well looked after I am sure he would have no problems with sensible adults visiting him and his dogs.. it seems he has free ones available to homes.. perhaps “save the dogs” you could save some of them and get them homes be “pro” active writing isnt going to help SAVE anything??? A website can be anything one wants it to be; yet there are pictures and police reports of this sterling character and what he has done to his dogs. He was charged/plead/found guilty of killing ridged puppies, so if he’s killing puppies that are of the “standard.”
If you truly want to save a dog, why go all the way to Thailand? There are thousands of animals put to sleep in the USA everyday, where most of these dogs are at least “temperment tested” before they go up for adoption.
Education is how we can save people and animals from a lot of heart ache.

He was once a simple puppy buyer that turned out to be a real evil charactor.. and his troubles only show through when he can join the others on the “hate JACK wagon” for a guy they all really do not know at all. I sold him a very nice BLUE puppy.. that is all..

YES, I was guilty of selling a very bad charactor a TRD in 1997 in New Jersey.. and dealing with a sick minded woman in Ohio in 2002.. and trusted another animal rescue worker in Thailand in 2007.. I was guilty of trusting these people to care for some of my TRD.. the rest is BS lies..
