Randolph, Iowa Mayor Offers Bounty on Stray Cats and Dogs, You can Sign Petition
What do you do if you’re the mayor of Randolph, Iowa and you want to cut decrease the numbers of stray cats and dogs. You take a page from history and enact a bounty of them. Why use more modern (and sensible) tactics when its so easy to do something so 18th Century?
How many ways is this wrong? Let’s start with unscrupulous adults and children kidnapping dogs and cats to make money.
Here’s the mayor’s own newsletter openly admitting his retro tactics.
MAYOR’S NEWSLETTERI have had several of our residents call about the increasin numbers of wild cats in town. This problem along with the dogs on
the loose, was brought up at our last council meeting. It was decided to get our citizens to help with this problem by putting a
$5.00 bounty payment for the catching and delivering live to me, any loose cat or dog caught in town. I want to stress to Our pet owners, have a collar on your pet. If I can identify the pet by the collar, I will return it to it’s. owner. The owner will be charged the cost of the $5.00 bounty that the city paid the person who caught it. Those cats and dogs without ID will be taken to the Vet at Sidney for disposal.
If you would like to inform the mayor that people in the hopefully civilized world don’t offer bounties on one of the two species who’ve been our trusted friends and symbiotes sign the Care2 Petition.
And if you would like to be a bit more direct, here is the mayor’s email. Please be polite when emaiing him. If we get rude or obscene our comments will not be considered seriously. Thanks to Catster Lady for supplying the email address.

This is absolutely INFURIATING. I cannot believe that he is able to actually get away with this. This guy needs to be impeached and someone oughtta put a bounty on HIM. Forgive me for getting so worked up but Joy you are right, this is an18th century - style way to deal with a problem. There are more humane measures that can be taken. Maybe the mayor should consider getting the city to implement an ordinance for mandatory spaying and neutering…? DUH
Barbarian!
Is there any kind of a bounty on stupid politicians?
The town could work with several rescue organizations to get homes for cats and then require all pets (both cats and dogs) to be spayed and neutered unless the pets are for show.
I am from Iowa & I am not happy with your plan for a bounty like this. I am sure glad my dog does not live in your town. My dog wears ID, but I would worry that someone wanting to make a few dollars could easily turn in my dog & remove the tags. Surely you can find a different plan to handle this problem?
I’ve just been over to the linked web site, & see that the bounty has been overturned!
=)
I’m also originaly from Iowa and can’t believe what I read. Thank you Jon checking the link again to see the bounty has been overturned. YIKES!! What was this guy thinking!!!
I continue to be astonsihed at such vile acts. Like others stated the tags could easily be removed,Institute spay and neuter programs. Sheesh and to think we thought we are so ahead of other countries in rights for humans and animals ie: Chinas “clean up” of street animals??? Thanks Jan.
