Malmo, Nebraska Wolf-Dogs Threatened by Village
Is this a new form of Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) hysteria? As far as I can tell, these dogs have never threatened anyone or anything. The worst anyone can say is that maybe the rabies vaccine doesn’t work but there’s no evidence either way according to the vet on the video.

Wolf-Dogs May Land Malmo Man In Jail
Hybrid No Longer Welcome In Saunders County VillageFebruary 22, 2008
MALMO, Neb. — Hybrid dogs may land their owners in a Saunders County courtroom.
David Hall, of Malmo, is facing criminal charges for raising hybrid wolf-dogs. He said the village licensed his hybrids twice and then stopped.
Hall said his dogs are just like anyone else’s.“My dogs are very predictable. They’re all nice dogs, easy-going dogs, gentle for their size,” Hall said.
Hall said his wolf-dogs have never bitten anyone, including the children who play with them regularly. If anything, Hall said, he is worried about neighbors hurting the dogs. One dog was already poisoned to death, and another survived a gunshot wound.
Malmo Village Attorney Jim McGough said the hybrids are unpredictable.
“Those hybrid animals should not be in the village at all,” McGough said. “Most importantly, there’s not a vaccination that’s proven to be effective for the rabies issue.”
State veterinarian Annette Bredthauer agreed that there is no proof the standard rabies vaccine works in wolf-dogs.
“Without scientific research, we don’t know how the vaccine would react in the wolf-dog hybrids. It’s a matter of gambling with someone’s life, so we need to follow the rules,” Bredthauer said.
“I’m trying my hardest to abide by their rules, but when they keep changing them–,” Hall said, throwing his arms up in the air.
Hall said Malmo licensed his wolf-dogs in 2005 and 2006 but not since.
“I can’t speak to what may or may not have happened in the past,” McGough said. “What I do know is, right now, those individuals are not in compliance with the village ordinances.”
Hall is scheduled in court next week to fight for his wolf-dogs. He could go to jail if he loses.
“This is a fight I will not lose,” Hall said.
Wolf-dogs are banned in the city of Omaha.

This is so rediculous! I used to own a wolf dog when I was younger. Infact she was the same mix as those dogs. Everyone loved her. She was one of those hospital dogs. I had her till she died of old age. people need to understand THIS: FOR THE HUNDRETH FRICKEN TIME, THE BREED DOES NOT DETERMINE THE BEHAVIOR OF THE DOG. WHAT DETERMINES THE BEHAVIOR IS THE LIFESTYLE THE DOG WAS RAISED IN. IT DOES NOT MATTER WHETHER THE DOG IS A PITBULL, WOLF MIX, OR EVEN A CHIHUAHUA. IF THE DOG IS BROUGHT UP IN A BRUTAL BACKGROUND OR TRAINED TO ATTACK, IT WILL ACT ACCORDINGLY. IF THE DOG IS RAISED BY LOVING OWNERS AND TRAINED OBEDIENCE, IT WILL ACT OBIDIENT. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A BAD DOG. WHAT DOES EXIST HOWEVER, IS A BAD OWNER. ALL OF THE ATTORNEYS AND MEMBERS OF BSL NEED TO UNDERSTAND THIS ISSUE. PEOPLE ALWAYS AUTOMATICALLY BLAME THE DOG BECAUSE THEY DO NOT WANT TO BELIEVE THEIR NEIGHBOR IS A BAD PERSON. THERE ARE MORE HORRIBLE PEOPLE IN THE WORLD THAT OWN DOGS THAN THERE ARE GOOD PEOPLE. THE SAD THING IS, THEY HAPPEN TO HAVE JUST AS MANY WONDERFUL DOGS WHO WERE TRAINED TO BE AGRESSIVE. THE WORLD DOES NOT UNDERSTAND THAT. I thank the many people who DO understand that. thank you
Is there really a DNA test that can prove that a dog is part wolf?
There is a new DNA test that is supposed to identify the breeds in a mixed breed dog. I haven;t heard how well it does or does not work on wolf-hybrids.
The DNA in wolves is the same as dogs. They are dogs like any other….although a lot better looking.

Wolfdogs are legal in OKlahoma, this story is about a Nebraska town.
Wolves and dogs share 99.8% of their DNA. The remainining .2% DNA is only found in wolves.
DNA tests can show conclusively what type of wolf
(Arctic, Mexican, etc) is in the mix, what breeds of dogs are in the mix, or even if there’s another type of canid in the mix eg. coyote. In addition, the tests can show what the mother was and what the father was without a reasonable doubt. To add to that even further, some of the testing can go back to the grandparents. However, none of the testing available can determine percentage or content.
There are about a dozen research labs in the U.S. and Canada that are capable of doing these advanced tests. UC Davis is one that comes to mind. (as opposed to the numerous commercial labs that can identify dog breeds by DNA
In the Kearney Hub, there was a small picture and caption, dateed for September 8, 2008, that stated a judge ruled in favor of Dave Hall in quest to keep his so-called wolf dogs in the community. I just hope and pray those nasty neighbors leave him and his dogs alone.
The breed does not determine the behavior of the dog? I don’t see too many GSD retrieving ducks for duck hunters, or basenjis herding sheep or any of those other ‘jobs’ assisted by instinct/behavioral tendencies selected for over the centuries (and in some breeds for thousands of years).
