Dogs give up their lives to save family
Tue Feb 12

WINONA, Minn. - Bella, a 3-year-old golden retriever/collie mix who was once rescued as an abused puppy, returned the favor to her owners by alerting them to a house fire. With help from Maddie, a 6-month-old golden retriever, Bella helped get Sue Feuling and her 9-year-old daughter, Mckenzie, out of the house last week. The dogs didn’t make it.

“Those dogs were without a doubt the heroes,” said Winona Assistant Fire Chief Jim Multhaup.

Bella had jumped on Feuling’s bed early Friday morning and started barking, and Feuling then smelled smoke, grabbed her daughter and rushed out of the house.

But Feuling couldn’t coax the dogs out of the house, even when she tried to run back in to yell for them.

“Bella must have thought Mckenzie was still in the house,” Feuling said.

A firefighter who arrived at the scene tried to save the dogs, but it was too late. The Feulings were taken to an area hospital for smoke inhalation monitoring, but were OK, Multhaup said.

That is too sad!!! It just doesn’t seem fair sometimes. Our furry family members are often our guardian angels. I have Goldens and this hits to the core. Maddie and Bella saved their skin kin with their totally selfless sacrifice. Sue and Mckenzie will probably hurt more from the loss of Bella and Maddie…than anything else lost in the fire. My heart goes out to them and their fur kin.

OMD! that story is soo sad, i just love these dogs as heroes and they did a thing that is just heroic and sad at the same time, i have to say that this is an amazing yet sad story

I’ll ask my Rainbow Bridge kitty to welcome them with open paws…

This is such a sad story. I cried a bit when Mom read it to me. I guess it goes to show humans that we Pups are really and truly “Man, Woman and Kid’s BEST FRIENDS”. We’d do anything for them. Even go to the Rainbow Bridge for them. This is also why my Daddy is fighting so hard to make it Law that ALL homes must have Fire Sprinklers! They only cost ( for a new home fit) the same as upgraded broadloom, only ONE goes off at a time, they do NOT go off like Smoke Alarms do, do NOT cause as much damage (if any) as a Firefighter’s hose pumping full-out and above all…They Save Lives!!!

this breaks my heart! i am sure their family is mourning this terrible loss. what brave creatures dogs are.
