Johnno,

Sadly I think the UK has 'sleep walked' into BSL. Not enough people had or indeed have the strength to publicly call for the lifting of section 1 of the DDA. When our own Kennel Club is putting out a statement saying 'the political climate is not right' to ask for a repeal of section 1, who else is their to stand up for dogs?

Australia seems to have been caught in the same net. What we need, I believe, is more organisation. Yes, we all need laws designed to protect people from dangerous dogs. And the simplest way to do that? Protect DOGS from dangerous PEOPLE in the first place! Seems obvious enough to me.

I've been saying for some time now the UK would be better to simply abolish the DDA and instead introduce and compulsory dog ownership certificate - much like a 'doggy driving licence' so before anyone can own a dog, they should prove themselves up for the job. Essentially we have a system at the moment that says it's ok for anyone to get a dog, no matter what you do as an owner if things 'go wrong' we'll kill the dog and you can just 'have another go'.

It's the equivalent of saying to drivers..."don't bother with the training or learning or understanding of the law. If things go wrong and you crash, we'll just destroy your vehicle and you can hop back behind the wheel again."

The logic is not there and the stats on dog attacks does not support BSL.

I'm hoping to put something together over here in the UK to try and mobilise dog owners into action. Unless we speak up, in numbers, the Govt will continue to trot out bad dog laws.

Just ready about 'Missey's' sad story for further evidence

the same think happened in Queensland Australia, only they have just 2 and a 1/2 hrs training in how to identify a pit bull or a pit bull type dog.

They used a bastardized version of the UKC breed standard for the APBT to see if a dog is a pit bull or not.

Tens of thousands of dogs that are not pit bulls or even cross breeds have been caught in the net of this ID system, taken away from loving homes, because they look a certain way, It Really is Canine Racism and persecution.

Google 22 point ID test.

I used to respect the UKC. I now HATE them. If I was a breeder in England, I would NOT register ANY of my dogs with them! Thank you for posting this. Now I will know NOT to ever support, recommend, or help them in AMY WAY!

Wow this is truly scary. Mosy bully breeds were originated in UK and Germany. They are now heavily BSL. Please good pups this must be stopped. How can anyone be certified anything in 4 hours? This makes me sick and even more sad for the poor pups and their people who will suffer from these "state" enforcers. Yes any pup is at risk. Thank you for posting this very sad state of dog affairs sponsored by a "reputable" organization.

Considering England “invented” many bully breeds, it’s a shame that they are now turning their backs on them. Do staffies (staffordshire bull terriers), the nannies of the dog world, now have to fear for their lives? Apparently so. Shame!

Christ! this is amoral on so many levels! You can not have ANYBODY making life and death decisions about innocent animals (or people for that matter), but to "qualify" someone to do so on 4 hours..it goes beyond ridiculous, this is perverse. Hopefully they'll be an uproar and whomever came us with this "geniosity" will be shame into a hole in the dirt. Disgusting!!
