Dutch “Artist” Uses Dead Dog and Dead Cat in Her “Protest Art”
Joy

I’m not getting into a discussion of whether or not this is art. I’ll simply say this crap registers off the disgust register. I don’t think anyone needs to abuse animals to “start a discussion.” If that’s what it takes then that person doesn’t need to converse.

Tinkebell is one sick woman masquerading as an artist.

Please be aware this article has some very upsetting information. I chose not to run the pictures due to their disgusting nature.

Thanks to Radio Netherlands for this article.

From dog to cat in one Popple
by Andy Clark
07-02-2008

A dead dog that can be turned inside out so that’s a dead cat, is this art or simply sick?

The dog/cat doll is an exhibit at a leading art fair opening in Rotterdam today and it has been stirring up a storm of response in the Dutch media.

Animal rights activist have condemned it as disgusting and the political party representing animal rights in the Dutch parliament is calling for a ban on using animals in what it calls ‘extreme art.’

The artist who has come up with the reversible pet is Katinka Simonse and she works under the name of Tinkebell.

Protest art
She says the idea of the dog/cat doll is to start a discussion about how we treat animals and that it should be seen as a protest against the push to create perfect pets via breeding and genetic manipulation.

But for Parliamentarian Esther Ouwehand the artwork goes too far: “disgusting, it passes the boundaries of what is acceptable,” she told the Algemeen Dagblad newspaper.

Despite the criticism, the organisers of the art exhibition in Rotterdam say they will not ban the dog/cat doll.

Popple
The artist calls her work a Popple - the name of a series of brightly coloured children’s dolls sold in the US in the 1980s. They too could be turned inside out.

Tinkebell is no stranger to controversy several years ago she killed her own cat and made it into a handbag. This caused international uproar and resulted in her receiving hate mail from around the world

OMG!!!! that is just plain sick!!! i looked at the real article and the pictures are just awful!!! this lady should be turned into a handbag!!! or a “doll”… this is completely discusting!!!

  2. Beach Dog

She killed her own cat and made it into a handbag…
She put day-old chicks through a paper shredder…
She forced hamsters to run for hours on end…

Now this! This woman is NOT an artist, she’s depraved. Why is she not in prison?

  3. Deb Howell

I think Tinker bell Snorted too much pixie dust. She’s fried her brain.
She should be put a way in a cage and forgotten.

  4. Erika

It’d be one thing to paint a picture, sculpt marble, shape clay, or paper mache the same thing to get the artist’s point across, but to actually use and torture animals in protest of how society treats animals? I like Deb Howell’s idea.

  5. Carina

This woman should be locked up! This is so disgusting!

  6. Danielle

I do believe here in America that psychiatrists would call that a precursor to becoming a serial killer??? If I sent Miss Tinkerbell through a shredder…could I call it ART?

  7. Cookie TN

Killing dogs is NOT art. Anyone who would do that is a murderer.

  8. Cookie TN

I almost forgot about the poor kitty. Killing a cat isn’t art either.

  9. Jaime

I’m creeped out by the purses and backpacks made out of PLUSH animals….words can’t even describe how sickened and mad I am about this crazy person’s “art.” Sick sick sick.

  10. Abigail!

Gross. What a sicko. And Tinkerbelle?

  11. Bella

Since when is murder and dismemberment “ART”? If that is art than no human being should be in jail for killing another. They could claim it was “ART” and they were trying to start a discussion. I hope she comes to the USA and we can throw her a@@ in jail !!

  12. Abby

    She’s a monster. That’s all. A monster.

  13. Claire ( Max's and Figa's mom)

How could see claim that as art? It’s totally not art for me. That’s stupid! I’m speechless!

  14. Carol

In the states that considered crimal and if she was to go to jail here…criminals hate child abusers and those that abuse animals…I hate to think what they would do to her…”in the name of Art”…
she’s gone from hamsters, chicks to cats and dogs. what’s next? Humans suits or clothing like in the Silence of the Lambs with Buffalo Bill.
    SICK.

  15. maureen

Have we gone completely insane..how could you even begin to think of this as art..someone lock her up please!

  16. Kathy & the Furkin

This cretin is certifiable and should be put in an institution for the criminally insane. And, provided it is required therapy, lobotomized, undergo shock therapy (which, I might add, is what she is creating with the butchering and abuse of innocent creatures’ bodies), and heavily sedated. She is no artist, she is a fartist. Never again should she be allowed to be near an animal, dead or alive.

  17. Lady's Big Sis

Wow. For someone who works with animals all day and has 3 very spoiled rotten pets and many friends with pampered furbabies, I often underestimate the nature of human beings. Just when you think the world is getting a little better when it comes to the rights of animals someone like this comes around and smashes my rose-tinted glasses. I really just don’t get modern “art”. Why does it have to be so disgusting? What happened to the days of just painting shocking imagery (Dali and Giger come to mind). I agree with Erika…couldn’t she have just used a non-biological medium to get her point across? This woman needs to be put away and giving heavy doses of some severe anti-psychotics. Although our laws don’t condone cruel and unusual punishment, I wouldn’t be adverse to making her run 24/7 in a giant plastic hamster ball with no food or water. Would that be considered art?

  18. Susan

    Unfathomable!!!!!!!!!!!!

  19. Angie

As an artist I get these great art mags, in an issue a few monthes ago there was a guy that used blood and human placentas in his art., that was gross.

  20. A REAL Artist

As a “real” artist (and animal lover), I am completely appalled that anyone would consider what this talentless woman is doing as art. Especially an “Art Museum”! She has no artistic talent and her way of stirring up controversy isn’t even clever. Everyone knows that hurting an animal is the easiest way to upset people.

Perhaps someone should skin her, plasticize her body and put it in the Body Worlds exhibit. That is the only way we will see anything resembling “art” come out of her.

It’s a shame she’s gotten any publicity at all. That’s exactly what she wants.

  21. WolfGirl

I agree with her point, but disagree with the way she’s making it. However, she is drawing public attention and she is right. I don’t see the difference between her paper shredding male one-day old chickens versus the way slaughter houses kill the male baby chicks because they are worthless to them. What’s the difference? In the end, she put them out of their misery faster than the slaughter houses do.

Again, I don’t like the way she’s proving her point (an animal dieing is always hard), but its getting the message out there - we as humans are cruel to animals (yes WE “civilized”, Canadians, Americans, meat eaters, leather owners, hamster/rabbit owners) are doing that to animals. It’s easy to point fingers, but look around your house. Do you have something leather? Did you feed your family meat? Do you own a dog and not walk it and feed them kibble their entire life? Animals were not meant to be forced fed the crap that makes up kibble, put in cages or slaughtered just because they were born. She is proving us to be hypocrites. And my friends, that is her ARTIST point (as hard as it is to see through the grotesque nature of it).

She is drawing attention to the issues at hand and the situation has become this desperate that it takes open cruelty to get the message across. How sad.

Wolfgirl, no offence, but how can you defend this? I’m sorry I cannot accept that cruelty is needed to stop cruelty, it’s like saying that war is the only way to achieve peace. I also would like to point out that as awful as the Petsmart scandal is, using PETA as a source is not such a good idea. PETA has recently been exposed for the cult-like, money-grabbing, non-humane criminals that they are. If you’re going to support a cause why not the Humane Society?

  23. CeeCee

Wolfgirl - before you defend this woman’s inhumanity parading around as “Art”, perhaps you should check out her website. She alludes to the fact that she’s possibly a pedophile by saying how she is also into internet porn and especially likes the “Barley 18″ websites because the girls remind her of her 13 year old cousin. She’s a real piece of work.

I doubt PETA would endorse such cruelty, as this wanna be artist has inflicted on animals, to make a point about anything. And the fact that you did means you don’t really belong here.

  24. Lady's Big Sis

CeeCee I just checked out her site. Wow. Why is this girl not in a mental institution? What a nutjob.

  25. WolfGirl

    Hey Ceecee,

I am not defending her inhumanity at all, she’s a horrible person for being able to do that and sleep at night and should be arrested without a doubt in my mind. It’s disgusting.

But what I am saying is that she has a point. If you read what she says in interviews and look beyond those 2 sites you looked at, you may find that she is making a statement, albeit a bad way of getting the point across: http://vice.typepad.com/vice_magazine/2007/07/chicks.html)

Also, here is a summary of her from a Dutch magazine I translated:
TINKEBELL. is Katinka Simonse’s alter-ego, a ‘designer of discussions’. She researches the issues of contemporary populist movements, including animal rights activism, and their strategies. Hypocrisy within these movements and discourses is the main focus point of her work. (from Empathy-Research.com)

Also the child porn - she’s doing the same thing. Putting it in our faces rather than hiding the fact that it’s still out there. We all know its wrong and those perverts need to have their toe nails plucked out one by one, but there hasn’t been a big enough outcry against it to abolish it permanently. So that’s what she’s doing. Drawing attention to it to to stop it.

Hope that clarifies what I said above. :)
